Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

    • I Got My Refund!

Hey everybody, it’s good to call and talk to more than one person. The first person said all I had to do was verify and I would be good. Well after I verify it appeared to be that I had a successful verification. Come to find out it really wasn’t and I’m waiting for another letter saying that they couldn’t complete the verification and needed more information and then I found out that, I had a W-2 for a job. I didn’t even work last year for $5.36 that they had on file

    @Red Dawn:
I called the main IRS phone number and told them I was experiencing a hardship. I believe I gave them my info or transferred me to the advocate line, I gave them all my info. They suggested I call my Congressman to get an advocate faster. I filled out the paperwork and my TA reached out to me within 2 weeks.

So according to the tax agent, 45% of all returns sent in before Feb 18, were held with a 570.

Hey everyone! What would you do?

I got a tax advocate to help me get my refund. I sent them my necessary documents in order to process and get my refund released to me. I got my ID verify letter in the mail today. Would it be smart to verify online or just leave it?

@Sly39: I understand what the code is. But considering in my 30 years of filing taxes I’ve never had an issue with anything, and now realizing I missed two w2s, I’m assuming that’s my particular issue, added onto the 1099. I was told all self employment is getting reviewed this year

@ShantayG: they told my daughter to verify she did nothing change then she got a letter wasn’t even to verify was a review ! People don’t understand a lot aren’t being asked to verify identity they are just assuming and calling..when its really reviews. People don’t realize 570 and 971 are general codes doesn’t mean it’s for anything specific but alot don’t need to verify alot are on a review

    Reply
  18. Sly39

@LostNthesauce: not likely from what I’ve seen it’s in review or verify identity that’s holding them up ..you see transcript online ?

    Reply
  19. Sly39

@Shelleybeansss: no my daughter’s both got 570 that’s just a code for additional account action pending nothing specific and they both have reviews. Neither has any new jobs or no W2 missing and if it’s in review nothing will help till it’s done not amended not uploading documents to their page so they can verify nothing helps till it’s done

Since IRS is providing the tax refunds to offsets, their ‘Customer Service’ should be able to give information to whom exactly they handed over the 💰

@Shelleybeansss: yes I have. It is saying nothing. Offset was taken care of by refund this year. But they did not take the entire thing. Would it be better to call them although it was dd through chime to a third party?

  33. Shelleybeansss

I wouldn’t think something like that. I would think more like past due alimony/child support/maybe a judgment..? Have you called the offset line by chance?

I have no idea what that could be then. Will it be credit cards? Like a collection? But it never did that before. What will be a non tax obligation?

    Hi,
Today was my DDD. I sent my DD info for Chime . I had an offset. My deposit amount was to be over $3k with offset taken out. Yesterday, I only received $800! through something call “Tgp products, sbtpg llc”. Wtf? I understand every company has a process fee and other fees but I’m missing $2K and no one can tell me why. I text my tax preparer, she stated I may owe someone but it does not show anything but my offset. I owe state $300. Has anyone been through this? Can you give me any information or advice about how to proceed to get my money?

@Emarto1: I would just receive it has a good sign if your portal don’t show the “2023 not processed” message. When did you file?

    Reply
  38. Emarto1

@LostNthesauce: I am wondering the same thing. For over a month I had a verify link on my irs account so that I can verify my return when I receive my letter. My letter finally came last Thursday and I logged into my irs account and the link to verify was gone. So I cannot verify. So I don’t know if that means I am back into processing without me verifying anything. I guess I will find out Friday.

I’m just curious if you filed and accepted 1/29 what are the possibilities that a return can throw itself back into processing? Is it possible for it to sit so long that the system could throw your return back into processing?

  40. Shelleybeansss

I tried to amend thru turbo tax and it gets all the way to the end and says your transmission did not go thru, you’re attempting to file a duplicate return. It’s an amended return. Even their software doesn’t get that. I just received two w2s for the one week I was working for these two places beginning of last January and tried to add them in. Ugh I don’t want to have to file a paper amendment. But I am wondering if these two measly w2s are what flagged my 570 at the beginning of feb
