key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@StephTX: right wayy before Easter š£ and this year it falls on April fools so that wouldnāt be the best joke to play on a tax payer lol
@Morris: I feel that! I am so afraid to look in the morning :( I have been praying we all get that 846!
Had N/A since accepted early February. Id verified last week tuesday, verification was successful the irs says… WMR went from “still being processed to being processed” i noticed today. Hopefully im in next transcript update . We shall see
Good morning, anyone here from Michigan got their refund yet? Mine says completed on Feb 6th but no DD date or anything!
I have been stuck on 570 0.00 for 2 weeks now holding my refund. It has a date next to it of 3/11 which since I am weekly so it will try to process again tomorrow, I believe? NO notices have come so left in limbo on what is being looked at. Fingers crossed whatever needs to be fixed it and it gives me the 846-release code tomorrow.
@Emarto1: oh okay I was just wondering cause I have a piece of mail with no image š
@LostNthesauce: I have informed delivery.
@Emarto1: being noisyā¦but how you know your letter coming today? Iām tryna see something on my end but itās operating incognito lol
@Starr: š¤š¾š¤š¾
@Morris: I hear ya. I filed on Jan 29 and was accepted the same day. Now I have to wait for a letter to verify. And the letter is coming today. About time.
@Sdiego: well Iāll definitely pull an informed delivery and let you know if mines show up today! My mailman runs almost near the end of his shift so we shall see!!!
@Sdiego: Can I please ask you where do you see the code 971 at? Does it show you on wheres my refund that you have a code? I’m lost about this one. thank you
@Emarto1: Thanks man. This is the first time and year after doing taxes every year that I had to wait this long for my refund. Last year I got my refund 8 days after Path Act Lift.
@Morris: The reason that I am asking is because a person earlier this morning said that their status went from still being processing to being processed. I was hoping g yours might have changed too. Anyway, I am sending you positive vibes that you will update tomorrow.
@LostNthesauce: I maybe getting one since I have the 971 I have not called but it won’t do anything as I will probably get a similar response.
@Emarto1: It’s saying the same old message since Jan. Your tax return is still being processed.
@Honeybee82: U and others give me hope. I’m wishing everyone who hasn’t updated the best of luck.
@JJ: I’m hoping..This is getting old. I know everyone is sick and tired of looking at those N/A’s.
@Iwantitnow: I faxed it. But they wonāt accept the fax unless it has a control number from the letter they sent.
@Morris: What does your wmr say today?
@StephTX: Yes, I ID Verified. I was thinking that, but in the back of my mind I feel I will be left out while everyone else gets updated. I hope I get updated. This has been a miserable and frustrating tax season.
@Sdiego: wicked we both was accepted on the 29th of Jan! I was told a letter went out on the 22nd of February and to allow 30 days not the standard 14 since they have a backlog on letters going out! He told me to phone back on the 23rd of march if I havenāt received it!
@Joe shmoe: Where/how did you send your docs? Fax? Mail? Thanks!
Anyone have a FAX # for RIVO at IRS?
Stuck with 570. 60-120 day review letter 4464C. I made a mess and forgot a couple things on my return. There is a difference of about $700 in what I owe in tax VS refund amount. Tried to ammend online but it wants the payment of that 700 which I don’t have LOL. Wondering if I can fax what is missing and get ahead of this. I don’t have a 971 or any other notice yet to submit anything further
Still no changes. I will assume I will get a letter mailed out on March 11 since that’s the date next to my 971. No notices online.
Finally after sending my w2 on 2/1 after receiving a letter 12c my transcripts updated to 846 3/12. It was exhausting this year. I had to get my congressman involved.
@Honeybee82: heey! Still here and crossing my paws for an update tonight LOL
Hello all!! New here!! I have a question. So my return was accepted on January 30 and since then Iāve been waiting on a letter to verify my identity. Finally this morning I called the tax payer protection line. The agent I was verified as of February 29 and wait 9 weeks for my refund. My question is has anyone else been told this and did it really take 9 weeks for refund to be received?
Update: my WMR finally updated from āstill being processedā to āwe have received your refund and it is being processedā no update on transcripts though.
@Denise N: @Morris: I was hoping I got on here this morning and seen an update , but there isnāt anyone saying they updated. Soooo just maybe you both are weeklies and you all will see an update tonight like Honeybee82 mentioned. Iāll be up for the party Iām a weekly also
@JJ: Mine has been that way since late January.. I Verified on the 26th and again on the 29th so I’m finally seeing some movement. It’s been almost 2months since I filed.
@Jay Jay: Last Friday, my transcripts populated with all of my boxes showing 2023 just after midnight. Then they officially updated with my 846 shortly after 2am. A lot of people started seeing updates right after midnight. So it definitely doesnāt hurt to start checking that early š
@QushunT: mine has said is being processed since I was accepted from the 23rd of last month
@Morris: You only update once a week as a weekly, and thatās probably what you areā¦especially since you had to verify. Transcripts process today for weeklies, so you might see an update starting any time after midnight-through tomorrow morning. I think youāll finally process this time, but if notā¦definitely next week! I wouldnāt be surprised at all if you finally saw movement through the night! š¤š¼
Last year I was an 05. I’m sure I’m one this year too. Transcripts do update for 05s tonight. I thought it happened after 3am. Anyhow for all of you who still have that infamous N/A don’t lose hope. I’m in the same boat as you.
@morris: you will see movement tonight
My “Where’s My Refund” changed from “still being processed” to “being processed” only update I’ve had since verifying on the 26th. Hoping for a DDD tomorrow!
@Morris: didnāt you ID verify? I read that moves you to weekly update so you wouldnāt update until tonight after midnight.
Got my state in one week my daughters state and fed by check both in 9 days on day 37 for my fed its crazy
@Private: if you got your state then you have nothing to worry about.. I bet you will see something happen Friday into Saturday.
