Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Transcripts updated today from blank to good codes and then a 570 just checked the mail and got 4464c letter. The only difference is I didn’t claim one of my dependents this year could that have triggered it?

Hey, hey. How is everyone? Does anyone have the 570 still? So I updated today with the notice issued. LOL. So fun. I’m still looking at my 2020 transcripts cause it was the same thing so let’s see next week. Hopefully, it’s only cause of the PATH. We’ll see.

@Sheila_33: So, it looks like I am not getting my small tax refund this year. Transcripts updated to a 570 code overnight. From what I have read it takes month or years to resolve, and it probably won’t be worth the effort for such a small return.

Chic Fil A needs to take over running the IRS. I have never waited long there (inside or drive through or curbside), and they always get it right.

On a more serious note, the IRS should try to get it efficiently turned around and put more harsh penalties on those that do wrong rather than holding innocent people up because of the wrongdoings of some.

Okay so my transcripts up dated I have the codes 150,766,768 then 971 notice issued. So does this just means they ajusted my refund amount or corrected something? Will i be updating with the 846 code next? WMR still has 1Bar and the delay processing along with tax topic 152

@Andrea e: ok thats good then.. as i said in my previous post, going back through the past years, the 846 date is always between 1 and 2 weeks before that processing date. last yr my process date was 3/11 and my 846 date was 2/27. look through your previous years and compare the process date/code 150 to the 846 refund issue date. this is of course if you did not have any delays like needed to file and amended return or id verify or anything that would have delayed it, otherwise the gap between those dates should only be a week or so

So if you are weekly and didn’t update today we have to wait until next week right?

Is this a question that can be answered? Or is everyone unsure?

After an 846 is posted, the as of date is gonna push out to make sure the deposit is made successfully and then, in most cases, it will snap back.

@andrea e: I can’t even see as of date on anything on my record. I see a lot of people saying that and I can’t see anything. Where do I go. I have to go thru id.me to look at anything about our taxes

@Pearlmarto: I filed 1/17, accepted 1/21. Transcripts updated on 1/24 but blank. On 1/31 I got an update that I needed to verify. (I think it was 1/31.) Anyway, I got my letter yesterday and verified. Today my transcript updated from AS OF: 2/10 to AS OF: 2/24. Hopefully this means I’m moving again. I’ll check again tomorrow as they’ll be updating then too. I’ve never had any issues before with my refund. I am going to update my W4 though so I break even at end of year. Why give them my money all year if they’re going to hold it hostage?

@dj zizi 23: If your return is frozen because of the path freeze, the dates are irrelevant right now. So I wouldn’t stress with it.

so i was curious about this as of date change and decided to look at previous years’ transcripts to see whats its been and i discovered something interesting. i looked up 2023 to see what the as of date was for and it showed 3/3/2025. i looked at 22. its also showing as of date of 3/3/25. same for 21, 20, etc. looked at the process date for each year and the actual date 846 is showing and the 846 date has always been between one and two weeks prior to processing date. last year i had a process date of 3/11/24 and 846 was on 2/27. 22 was an amended return. 21 had 3/28/22 and an 846 of 3/17. for this year, i still have a processing of 2/24 so its very likely (fingers crossed) the 846 will show up as a date for next week when the hold lifts.

I’ve been an 05 for as long as I can remember 16 yrs or so. This year suddenly I’m now an 01. Any other year I might’ve been ok with this. But seeing 05 is a Friday update and 01 is a Friday process, I’m living in Murphy law. Processing date and by date 3/03 it has been this way from the beginning and had not changed. All other codes are good. Walking path.

Finally was able to check my transcripts since the error message from earlier but my as of date switched again from 2/10 to 3/3 don’t know what that’s about but still no 846 so the anxious wait continues, I don’t understand why it took so long to access my transcripts just to only have my as of date changed and nothing else possibly could see some movement tonight/saturday morning
