Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@taxrefund08: yes, if the date next to your 846 code is 2/14….that’s when you’ll get your deposit. Unless you have a NHB and no fees taken out, then you could see it even sooner!

@Kimberlysimms85: you should be fine, and hopefully see it populated this Friday! Mine updated with an as of date for 2/17 and all 0’s…then a week later it updated to all good codes. Now I’m just waiting for Path to lift and get the 846! Updating with all 0’s means you officially started processing, but just have to cycle through again to finish!

@Still waiting: based on patterns seen from 2020 when the 15th fell on a Saturday, we think dailies will update with their 846 on the 19th and weeklies on the 21st. The DDD’s will be for the following week, but if you have a NHB, you should receive it the same day you get your 846 😊

Sheesh I haven’t updated with a PATH message on WMR in like 3 years… I realized that is because before that I filed in January…in the last 3 I’ve filed begining of February…and being a weekly I usually only update once …and that’s usually the Saturday after PATH lifts…

@HappyInNc: @onenonlyme is correct. You can file with a child as a dependent and still not be on Path. In order to qualify for Path, you need to claim the ‘additional’ child tax credit and/or EIC. A regular child tax credit (CTC) does not qualify you for Path, so that’s where a lot of the confusion is transpiring. It has nothing to do with test batches either…I’m in the test batch almost every single year, and I still don’t process before Path lifts. When I first joined this site over 10 years ago, I didn’t even know what a transcript was…so I completely understand how confusing it can become. But people who file a child with just the CTC do not fall under Path, and that’s why they are getting theirs before the 15th. 😊

@MaryB: exactly. But I haven’t gotten my federal yet. I called today they said the day of. I’m so confused. I get my work check 2 days early so I’m not sure why not my taxes. And it’s peanuts. So I’m so lost

@HappyInNc: claiming a child is not what puts you on path. Regular child tax credits does not qualify for path. It is additional child tax credit and earned income credit.

@starchild111: You are correct because I filed a child got the credit and received my return already and I don’t care what anyone says other wise. Don’t tell me about the law because convicted felons are suppose to be president so at this point in time shit happens as it did for me.

Does anyone remember how deposits went last time the 15th was on a weekend?

    Reply
  22. AllRightsReserved.

@Sheila_33: The LTR12C stated that they’re requesting proof of amount of wage or withholding on line 25d of 1040. Proof was uploaded online today, so now the wait begins. The odd part was that it came with a payment Voucher/Coupon, so that part is still confusing.

When I went in person last year I was told to take copy of last year’s return and that year’s return and W2 and drivers license with socials security cards but they only looked at my W2 and that current year’s return and the last year’s return.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Joe: I suspect some people may see money as early as the weekend because the computers work holiday or not. That would only be if you have a no hold bank.

On Friday, the 14th, is it possible to get an 846 date for the following week, or does it have to be after the 15th to even get an 846 if your a Pather, even though the DDD date would be after the 15th.

@Walter DOG: What I’m saying is that the date can move around, it’s done it in the past but I don’t think it’s an issue. It’s possible it’s just wanting to drop that 846 and it’s frozen and it can’t.

@Sheila_33: it happened to me. I was good one Friday then the following Friday the 570 popped up. You’ve never seen this? I’ve never been through this either and have just assumed it’s an audit or something and know not to expect my refund when I normally do. Anything I can do?

    Reply
  49. Andreanotsignedin

@Stephennotsignedin: I did. I updated to the credit amount of my refund as of date 2/10, with good codes, on. Friday, then the next Friday popped up the 570 with 0.00 next to it with a date of 2/24 next to it, as of date at the top of transcript still 2/10. Nothing has changed since then for me.

Shelia: I just read the manual lol I read all the Information about the c freeze and your absolutely correct on the freeze and was no way they could have updated again after update to good codes with 766,768 there return would have been in freeze mode until February 15th so they must have lied in Facebook it something bc I don’t see how they could have gotten a new code while being in the c freeze

@Monee: yes a social and id and take ur last year’s tax return and this year’s and a copy of ur w2 and copy of any dependent social security cards. They may only look at W2 and this year’s return and last year’s but take as much of that as possible in case they need it

@Stephennotsignedin: i finally caved and called to make an in person appt. Lol. Turns out they have 1 appt for tomorrow and it’s 3 miles from my house. I’m so used to getting denied bc of the stupid letter that I’m afraid to hope they will actually let me verify. But the woman on the phone seemed so happy to help me. She said I need 2 forms of ID though. I only have my license. What else can I take? Will a social security card work??

If you lucky to have a state refund they don’t hold for path like federal … some returns people got back 2-5k for state .. call em “mini federals”

@starchild111: I didn’t say you were “fibbing”. I said you were wrong. I was a test batch. This is a matter of LAW. No matter how much you wish you were right, you simply are not. The system will not hand out a select few to test batch PATH people. It doesn’t work that way. They still fall under a LAW. No slipping through cracks. No special test batch. Your friend is possibly mistaken in the understanding of what it means to be on PATH. And that is the end of that discussion. Fact remains; PATH does not lift for ANYONE early no matter what.

@vanee: the way the irs is “IRS-ING” this year u can see ur money before WMR show APPROVED just have faith i see alot of discouraging folks in the area but u have all good codes, yes when u update on ur transcripts for that 846 ur dd should be beside it on that line like i said wmr been doing they own thing and changed up since last year so we havent had these specific changes like the some folks not geting the PATH msg or if they are its in other areas were not used to seen them but so far so good u got good codes happy spending when u get ur change
