key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a âqueueâ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
Thatâs where we step in.

@taxrefund08: yes, if the date next to your 846 code is 2/14âŚ.that’s when youâll get your deposit. Unless you have a NHB and no fees taken out, then you could see it even sooner!
@Kimberlysimms85: you should be fine, and hopefully see it populated this Friday! Mine updated with an as of date for 2/17 and all 0âsâŚthen a week later it updated to all good codes. Now Iâm just waiting for Path to lift and get the 846! Updating with all 0âs means you officially started processing, but just have to cycle through again to finish!
Im curious to see how this 5 days early thing through TT is gonna work….
What yall think last friday my transcript updated to all zeros no codes think i will finish updating this friday or think i should worry
I have an 846 code with a refund date of 2/14. Is that the day it will show up in my bank account? WMR hasnt updated well, i checked to many times this morning so I won’t know till tomorrow.
@Still waiting: based on patterns seen from 2020 when the 15th fell on a Saturday, we think dailies will update with their 846 on the 19th and weeklies on the 21st. The DDDâs will be for the following week, but if you have a NHB, you should receive it the same day you get your 846 đ
As of date is Feb 17 and I am with path. Anyone know if we will see and 846 this Friday for DDD of Feb. 20 I am assuming because Monday is Presidentsâ Day?
Sheesh I haven’t updated with a PATH message on WMR in like 3 years… I realized that is because before that I filed in January…in the last 3 I’ve filed begining of February…and being a weekly I usually only update once …and that’s usually the Saturday after PATH lifts…
Correction I meant a daily*
@Pikpok:
It was tax year off 2020 Covid year and we had to wait till the next Friday to update (for weeklies) with 846 & I was on 0505 early filer that year so if your a dad ugly it will start spring out ddd on Tuesday morning processing after 3am
@HappyInNc: @onenonlyme is correct. You can file with a child as a dependent and still not be on Path. In order to qualify for Path, you need to claim the âadditionalâ child tax credit and/or EIC. A regular child tax credit (CTC) does not qualify you for Path, so thatâs where a lot of the confusion is transpiring. It has nothing to do with test batches eitherâŚIâm in the test batch almost every single year, and I still donât process before Path lifts. When I first joined this site over 10 years ago, I didnât even know what a transcript wasâŚso I completely understand how confusing it can become. But people who file a child with just the CTC do not fall under Path, and thatâs why they are getting theirs before the 15th. đ
@Pikpok: Yes, I have had Saturday deposits even when my bank still held til post date.
@MaryB: exactly. But I havenât gotten my federal yet. I called today they said the day of. Iâm so confused. I get my work check 2 days early so Iâm not sure why not my taxes. And itâs peanuts. So Iâm so lost
@HappyInNc: claiming a child is not what puts you on path. Regular child tax credits does not qualify for path. It is additional child tax credit and earned income credit.
@starchild111: You are correct because I filed a child got the credit and received my return already and I donât care what anyone says other wise. Donât tell me about the law because convicted felons are suppose to be president so at this point in time shit happens as it did for me.
@MzB81: I thought WF no longer held?
Anyone got a DDD for 2/12 and bank with Wells Fargo still waiting on deposit?
How long after filing should you see a transcript? Filed 02/08 with TurboTax accepted same night and just got a âHooray your refund is coming your way!â email.
