key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

@Tab: The IRS is always throwing me curve balls lol. This year it’s marketplace insurance.
@Tab: im sorry but i know someone personally get a depposit on she was on path , only reason she got hers is becuase she was in the test batch if you was in that test batch anythin was liable to happen and im congratulating the ones that did cus most folks need they cash me personally i dont care about another return tbh but just vouching for a friend who did in fact get early deposit and she is on PATH and her WMR never updated lol so like i mentioned early this season there have been different scenerios and not everybody i the same state there a few diff filing stations worldwide that test patch will have us all in here looking crazy we cant go by any other year thats clear and should be understood at this pt
@Kia4806: When was your return accepted by the IRS?
@Sheila_33: I wouldn’t be think it would be happening to so many in what appears to be one group. The odds alone. 🤷🏻♀️ But IRS is good at IRS’ing so 🤣
@Starchild111: it’s definitely different. My codes are still good on my transcripts. The WMR has PATH Act with one bar. 🤔
@KrunchStarKS: thats y i stopped calling the i r s years ago if i don’t see it on my transcripts i just wait til i do lol they r just viewing our transcripts like us, they aren’t manually taken our returns out of a pile looking them thru for us they pull our transcripts like we been doin calling them will give u a headache for sure cus they don’t know if they don’t see anything on them transcripts then they gunna give u general protocol even tho some have received there refunds they are supposed to tell us doors didn’t open until 27th lol
@Helpmate: I’m guessing you owe back taxes and they are taking this refund but still owe more. I could be wrong
@Sheila_33: I wonder if then people who said this I wonder if they just didn’t notice the code until the following week bc I’ve only seen like 10 people who have said they updated again and to 570 bc wouldn’t there be way more than just like 10 people who claim that. I mean out of millions of people only like 10 I’ve seen that has said that. I just wonder if the code was at the bottom of there transcripts and they just didn’t see it
@Stephennotsignedin: You should keep in mind that those can be easily (quite easily) falsified. It doesn’t take a lot to make something like that look “real”. Send it to acrobat and erase a few spots, fill in, and boom… gotcha a whole new paper. Not certain if that is happening or why people do things like that but it does occur. Like those trying to prove they got DD early even though they are on PATH. Typically it’s one person under various names trying to cause a stir.
@Starchild111: No one with PATH credits has received their refund yet. They are confused.
Filed with TaxSlayer. Federal Accepted 1/17 State accepted 1/22. Still nothing. WMR 1 Bar. Still processing your return. Transcripts blank. Tax record updated to AS of Feb 10th on 1/31. No Notifications for verify on the website. I verified the Id.me IP pin. Called IRS today and they said that the Tax system didn’t open up until 1/27 and that They cannot access my account until after 21days after 1/27.
@Justadadof6: And please try to stick with one user name, my brain is having a hard time keeping up lol.
@Stephennotsignedin: I’m going to rest a bit and then I’m gonna jump into the manual. There’s definitely a section about the c-freeze that explains the process and what is effected by the freeze but I can’t remember the exact section.
@Kla4806: i now have that notice as well and never seen it with a 1 bar or without the PATH msg which is new this season
im seeing a lot of different updates this season and i been following for decade lol plus a tax preparer myself cus on mine personally im getting different updates i didnt see last year alone this season has been tricky i seen some PATH get they refund already so not one return is the same this season it seem we cant even go off of what we knew last year everybody starting from scratch on this irs knowledge cus they changes alot up just for us not to be ahead of the curve of course
@HuntingtonBeachmomof4_notsignedin: mine is as of 2/17
