Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

    • I Got My Refund!

    Okay I got a question
So I did my taxes through turbo tax with my last check stub and when I got my we it all matched up but I was hurting for money so I went and let a tax pro do my taxes so I could get a advance on my return well I was able to get 6k in a advance when she did them but I had completely forgotten I had did my taxes through turbo well I should say I forgot to let my tax lady know
Amy ways my turbo return got accepted before they accepted the one my tax lady did. My question is what should I do I mean I know I should pay the loan back but will they allow me to repay it once I get my taxes back or will they try to take it from the refund before I even get it or will they try to take it out if my bank that I had it deposited into.

@Red Dawn: I will share a link that might help, but I’m unsure how that would work. When I won some money at a casino a couple of years ago, they only took state taxes, so not sure how it works when they take both from the winnings. https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc419

@StephenfromrosewoodNC: – I only see 2023 Wage and Income. The other 3 have N/A. To be fair, last year I filed early and received refund on 02/08/2023 and my transcripts did not update until right before I received my refund. Up until that time I only saw N/A.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Kat123: Did California do any child tax credit payments in advance this year? I see they have new one-time credits up to $3600 for qualifying children, etc. If you scan your return, do you see anything on your state form showing an adjustment? When the feds did the 250 per child a few years back, it calculated my credit but also adjusted for amount paid ahead. It reduced my refund at filing, but the total amount was still more that year. Only other thing that might apply to you and others in California and a few other states were those that received surplus checks or other state-issued payments that are considered income, etc and are taxed now at the end. But I’d look at forms for any adjustments downward–and if none–did you miss claiming something?

also a quick reminder for those of you who had delays with receiving your refund last year whether it be amended returns or any other delays and you were paid interest by the IRS, wait to file until you get your interest payment notice from the IRS. if you file and do not include that as part of your income, you return WILL BE FLAGGED and you will be held up in the system once again and your refund will be delayed. you also need to file it in the correct section of your tax return. even though it is income, it does not get filed under a W2. you need to input it in under taxable interest payments. i made the mistake a few years ago of putting this in as a W2 and was flagged immediately and my return was delayed until June. even though yes it is income, it is tax interest income and goes in a different area of filing.

I usually get anywhere from 800-1200 from CA this year im getting $24 (i claim 3 kids) which is what got me that before, they are all small so i know they qualify. was there a big change in ca tax refund laws that i dont know about? mind you this has always been my average refund for a few years.. im a bit confused i know i have some fees, but that still doesnt add up even before i add the fees (other forms) and just with my w2 its like $400
