Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Walter DOG: If you suspect ID verify, you can be proactive and check idverify.irs.gov. You can login with your ID.ME creds or IRS account. It will not allow you to do so unless you need to verify. Happened to me last year and didn’t receive the letter till weeks after I was already verified.

@Walter DOG: I filed and was accepted 1/16. Transcripts N/A with 2/13 as of date . This has happened to me the past four years. I end up having to id verify. Nothing changes so I just don’t get it. Looks like this will be year 5

@zhosa: If it won’t get unstuck from “pending” how do I find out that it needs fixed or it has been rejected? It is now going on the 3-day (72-hour) mark. Thank you for this information. I suspect that there is in fact an issue but there is currently no way for me to know anything. So frustrating.

@2020 was a long year: Yeah, that has to be really frustrating….not knowing one way or the other. Since it hasn’t been “rejected” by the IRS, I’m more inclined to think it’s just a delay with TT. IRS is really fast when it comes to issuing the acceptances and rejections, so since you haven’t gotten either…I think it’s TT. For sure, keep us updated though…and good luck! 😊

I have codes 150, 766 and 768. I’m just patiently waiting. Also i decided to use chime card. Not sure how early they’ll release. But praying things goes smoothly for you as well. 🙏🏾

@2020 was a long year: my was pending too(F-1/23, A-1/25) but finally got rejected after 2 days and i had to fix it and it was accepted instantly. I’m under the understanding that, if the system won’t fix it, you will get it back and have to fix it. I had to fix the form for the 1095.

@Ohio girl: If you have that Feb. 13th “as of” date, I’m not real sure it will change until it gets close to that date. All the system knows is that you’re in the system and they placed that date 3 cycles out to make sure you get processed in that time frame. Its a reminder that you’re waiting. For those with transcripts filled out, that date is irrelevant, because if you have the path credits, that return is frozen with nothing moving until that freeze is lifted on Feb. 15h.

Just checked in to transcripts for sh@#$ and giggles and found that my transcripts have processed. I am on PATH and a weekly and have never had my transcripts process this early. I expected to process on 2/17 for a DDD of 2/22. That is my usual timeframe. Any chance that ill update on WMR tomorrow with 2/1? Has there been a pause on PATH I haven’t heard about? My cycle code is 20230405. If I’ll be waiting anyone have a good guess as to what my DDD will be? Thanks.

I owe Ohio Unemployment a couple hundred dollars for non fraud overpayment. Does anyone know if that will delay my refund? I’m sure they will deduct it from that from what I’ve read already but nothing about if it delays it. thx.

@celina93: Yes, you’re on the path. That “as of” date won’t move again until the path hold lifts on Feb. 15th and you cycle thru and post the 846 refund code. Congratulations!
