Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

    @Shadeon: did u have a 420
Code at one point ? If so how long did u have it or did it lift after u sent everything in ? That 424 means they have lifted your Audit and I believe 811 is your refund freeze is lifted. But you don’t have the refund release code as of yet. Just curious tho how long u were under audit for maybe give me hope. My audit code posted to the file 2/17

@Mlronq: same I’m on a freeze code and a 420 audit lol I sent in all the requested documents over a couple weeks ago and nothing and could be nothing for months because they can just take their precious time and make me wait even though I’ve submitted all proof ( my proof of income I’m self employed , and stuff to prove my kids lived with me all year to re qualify for earned income credit ) it’s like I wanna call and be like man can you just look at my stuff and move me along everything is what I said it is 🤣 I might try to call a tax advocate today and see if they can get things moving along because this whole sit and be patient from 30-120 days isn’t for me I need my money

@MrsTabby: how do they reduce your child tax credit? Was it a difference in your wages or something ? Just curious how something like that happens or did you have write offs or something that effected that amount.

@nickc013 it’s honestly better to see nothing than have these freeze codes in my opinion. At least you’ll prob update with a ddd at some point. I have no clue how long I’ll be waiting for these holds on mine to be released and it has been 2 months.

@shadeon seems like there was a freeze on the account but looks like it was released. They’ll be sending a notice either to let you know if something changed or ask for information. What’s the date by the 971?

I’m at my wits end. Filed and accepted Jan 27th. For 2 months my transcripts have all been n/a. I’ve called twice and both times was told there is nothing I need to do. There is nothing wrong it’s stuck in processing. I never heard of such a thing.
No letters or notices when I check I.d me. The customer service said the same. My return is the same as every year. Same job same dependents. Every week I wait for the update just to stare at N/a transcripts and have to wait another week.
Sucks seeing so many people file after me and get their Ddd. I’ll never file before path act lifts again. My return hasn’t been touched in 2 months. No codes because there are no transcripts. I call and I’m told nothing is wrong and no letters. People that filed after me and had to verify have done so and got their money as I sit and wait. Wish I had some sort of anything. 2 months of zero.

@Meme: This is now our third year with a substantial delay. In 2020 it was May before we got our refund and we received $16.71 interest… 2021 it was April and we got $11.23… now, this season… who knows. I called, finally got insight. Sent in the necessary documents and this is week number three of absolutely no movement whatsoever. None on transcripts nor wmr. I called, “you’ll be receiving a letter between March 27 and April 3…. I will advise you of what the letter states, it can and most likely will take an additional 120 days to process your return”

I’m starting to wonder……when does interest kick in on your “unreceived” tax return and what is the percentage rate they use. What date will they use as their start date?

@Dirtydog218, yes I’ve been chewing on that same 152 “bone” for a while now. That and the “your return takes longer than the normal time frame”.

It’s like a ghost town in here. Those of us with 570 codes are on our own . I got a tax advocate to call me and she said they flagged me cos some numbers were put in the wrong spot. Whatever that means. How does that happen if you e-filing with turbo tax. All numbers match. She said they can’t get involved till June 30. She said to upload a w2 which I did. Still nothing.

    • I Got My Refund!

i filed on 2/16. i got my 4464C letter on 2/28. i was told it could be 45 days, then 60 days, then the newest one i was told was 120 days. it is all because my payroll provided me with incorrect information on my W-2 which i used to file my return. it was immediately flagged by the IRS when i filed because that information did not match what the IRS had on file. it took me 1 call to the advocate service to find this out when all the times i called the normal number, they could not tell me when they had the info right in front of them. when i contacted HR, they contacted the payroll company and it was discovered that they misprinted my W-2. so because of a clerical error out of my control that i had no idea about, my return is now in holding hell. i did request the advocate services but it will be 2 weeks before i hear from them so i am hoping for some resolution before then. the new processing date as well as the 570 code date are both 3/27 and i am on cycle 20231003 so i am a daily. for those of you who have received the 4464C letters and have gotten no info when you call the IRS and they tell you to wait, it is most likely the same thing i am dealing with. when they said to recheck all my income numbers, i went off what i had in my possession and i never thought it was an error on my payroll company’s end. if yours is stuck in this limbo like me, it might be a good idea to contact the advocate service or have your HR dept compare what they have on file for your W-2 as compared to what you have and if there is a discrepancy, well there they you go.
