key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@kellyAnne0908
Well hopefully you’ll see that 846 on your transcript soon! Fingers crossed! The date on my 570 is 3/6 and 971 is 3/13. I’m hoping I’ll see my notice today. The waiting and not knowing is what drives me nuts!
@570 Go Away: I filed late January and accepted on 1/31. Just got my ID verify letter 3/2. Been Iimbo since the beginning. The IRS screwed a lot of us this year especially with the ID verify.
I’m still at the 2 transcripts showing but says return not filed. The other 2 show N/A still. I’m a weekly. I need the money this time and for the past 2 years it’s been slower than normal.
What time does it update today?
@570 Go Away: I hope you get yours ASAP… I will keep you updated on m
@NVDIV: this maybe a double post. I posted but I don’t see it. Mine maybe held up because of a fundraiser I did through one of my social media accounts for kids at our school who’s families couldn’t afford Holiday gifts or meals. I raised in the range of 1200-1400 dollars from donations ranging from 1$ up to 200$. Serves me right though! No good deed goes unpunished! Not sure if that has anything to do with it, since I do it every year but who knows! I didn’t even claim it as a write off though!
@NVDIV: also I think my hold is because I raised around 1200 dollars through small donations on one of my social media accounts for kids at my school who’s family couldn’t afford gifts. I have a feeling they want to count that as income! Some were 1$ and all the way up to 200$ donations but everyone of them wrote “donation for school toy drive”. If that’s what’s holding me up, serves me right! No good deed goes unpunished
@NVDIV: mine just switched to March 27th on yesterday’s update so maybe you’re getting a little ahead of me!! I sure hope so! Honestly I’d be super happy if you got yours! Then at least I’d know one person was good and my turn would be next!!
@NVDIV: you and I just floating in this boat down sewer river with no ore. Hopefully they throw us a line because it sure starting to smell something awful!!
@570 Go Away: I forgot to tell mention thats its been March 20th since the beginning of this month and i just noticed
@570 Go Away: I just noticed this… back in feb when i found out i had the 570 it originally said as of March 6 2023… now its saying March 20th I am so tired of this lol..
Filed in January got a 570 code. As of date changed from 3-6 to 3-27. Does that mean anything or just the computer kicking it down the road? Processing and 570 date stayed 3/6. Anyone have any insight on this?
@NVDIV: it’s insane! I filed late January after they started accepting returns. Got the 570 and nothing! It’s unbelievable this year for some of us. Worst part is we really can’t do anything. Call and get told nothing. No letter sent, no update, just lost in the void
@Mlronq: it’s a cp24 they made an adjustment of $54 to add to my refund my refund
@Mlronq: ok thanks. I did receive a notice last week to verify my identity. Transcripts just updated this week with the 570 and 971 code.
@kellyAnne0908
If you don’t see any further updates by next Friday I would call to see if they can tell you what the notice is about and why it’s on hold. They might just be reviewing it but it’s better to find out sooner if they need any information from you that way you can take care of it asap and hopefully get your return back into processing. What does it say when you check WMR?
Has the refund chart on this page been fairly accurate?
@MrsPenn: yes
Checked WMR showing still processing files 2/24 checked trans showing 846 3/15/23
How long does it take for a return to process that is resequenced ?
@Sheila_33: thank you
@Cantcatchabreak: Thank you! That always confuses me. I am like do they update each night or each morning. A mess I tell ya! LOL
@Mlronq: 03/27/2023 for both
@TPerry: no only Fridays for weekly updaters
Do transcripts update over the weekend?
@YourNameHere_5thYear: freeze was *RELEASED. Sorry for the auto-correct
I am a weekly. I had a refund freeze to verify info and then the freeze was renewed.
My as of date changed to 3/27 this morning from 3/13, but now I checked again and it shows I have a refund due but as of date change back to 3/13. What on Earth?
@Sheila_33
So my as of date changed to 3/27 today..and from what I’ve seen you post recently this is a good sign as long as it doesn’t snap back to a previous date right?
@finally846inct: me too!! Except I filed and accepted on 1/31 …all I can say is finally!!! Never had to wait this long
Finally can see my transcripts! I filed 1/31 and was accepted 1/31. Per transcript 846 code…refund date is 3/15
@kellyAnn0908
The cycle code means your return was put into the irs master file on the 10th week of the current tax year which is this week. You will see an 846 code when your refund is approved. 570 means a hold on the account.
@kellyAnn0908
What are the dates on your 570/971
Did you receive a notice yet??
@sgorham29: When it pushes out and then snaps back, it means the system is trying to get you processed but it can’t. So unfortunately, whatever is holding you has not been resolved yet manually to put you back into processing.
810 freeze code called and was told to wait until April 7th. Anyone had this issue before
@Starr: That’s wonderful news. Sounds like that refund code got placed. Congratulations!
I have the 971 and then the 570 and on the irs website my return is finished processing but I don’t have a ddd do you think I’ll update tonight my cycle code is 20231005
@Paymeplease: ID verify hold won’t show on the transcript since it’s an invisible hold. The 570, on the other hand, is a hold so they can either adjust something or review.
@Keish: They have to manually get it back into processing after reviewing it to finish it up. With the messaging changing on the Wmr, its possible things are moving but hard to say unless you can see the transcript to see if any dates have changed.
@rocky
570 is basically hold on your refund and the 971 means they’re sending a notice. Mine has been stuck this way since 2/17. I have called and called but all they will tell you is to wait for the notice. I did get someone to tell me what the notice was about though she said that I needed to verify my income by submitting my w2 so I did but that was a week ago and I still haven’t seen any new updates. When I called again and told them I uploaded my w2 and nothing changed she said “we’re told to advise you that due to Covid 19 please wait 120 days…” blah blah blah I hung up lol. I’ve really been clueless since January. When I called tax advocate today she said they’re experiencing a lot of delays this year and reviewing many who filed head of household and if there’s a hold on the account there’s nothing I can do but wait. It’s really disappointing. They told me I would have my notice by today but I still haven’t received anything.
Are they still up dating today its 4
