key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Sheila La: the ID verify you did was just to set up your id.me account to be able to view your transcripts. The normal Id verify that has something to do with your taxes is the letter they send you in the mail after you have filed. This id verify will ask you questions that is on your tax return that you and only you would know the answers to so that they know it was you who filed the return. If by chance you do receive a letter you will have to id verify with an agent by phone or online if the letter says you can and you will be able to do it on the id.me account. Once you do that and you pass successfully then it usually takes about 2 weeks but they will tell you 9 weeks
@@theuniversehatesme: same!! but I used HRB.. transcripts still have bottom 2 2022 (but only shows as of 03/13/2023 with 0.00 and nothing else but top is N/A..
So I filed with TT on 1/26 and was accepted…WMR is at 1 bar, saying delayed still processing. Transcripts aren’t showing anything for me. This is ridiculous. It’s like the early ppl get punished smh
Married filing jointly
E-filed with TurboTax
Accepted 01/23/2023
EITC, CTC, PATH, 05 batch
Received 5071c letter, completed online almost two weeks ago now.
Transcripts are still N/A
“Still being processed” on WMR
This is driving me nuts.
Anyone else in the same boat?
@TXBama: I am normally a weekly but I guess I switched over to daily.
Also, I’ve seen questions about if “processing VS still processing” is better. In my experience this time.. I had the processing message first, the it switched to STILL processing and days after that, I was approved. Hope this info helps.
I filed 2/27..accepted within hrs
Approved 3/7
DDD 3/10
I received my deposit 3/8
I called TAS because of the 570 code, and was told they had trouble verifying the wages that was on my W2. Even though it pop’s up on the SSA wages page, and my employer showed me the W3 that they submitted.
So, now I have to send my congressional rep all of my paystubs just to get it verified. Kinda a pain in the butt, tbh.
Rant-time over.
@Cantcatchabreak: ok so does it count as ID verify if I had to go through that process when I was trying to update my account online so I can view my transcripts. I no longer have access to the phone or email that I had originally signed up with so they had me verify all my information with an agent from ID verify, so I’m kind of confused . I never received a letter. But in order to access my transcripts, I had to do that, and from the last agent I spoke to they said that my refund would be issued the check because it was set for a manual refund whatever that means. I would see update in two weeks and receive a check 10 business days after the update .
@Kikibroke: try to ID verify today before they close unless you can do it online. I received my ID verify letter on Thursday feb 23rd called that evening at 6:00pm before they closed. Passed the verification successfully and I updated that following Friday mar 3rd for a check to be mailed tomorrow March 10th. For some reason a lot of people who are having to ID verify are getting checks mailed instead of DD
@TeeDee44: you should Update tomorrow. I had to wait almost 2 weeks after ID verifying. Hopefully you will get a DDD because a lot of us are getting checks mailed after Id verifying. My mail date is tomorrow March 10th
@Charlotte: Me too
Tomorrow will be three weeks on the 570 code for me. *insert party horn* LOL
Hoping to see change in transcripts or some kind of update tomorrow. Been “still processing” in ID verify hell for 2 weeks. Went to “is processing ” 2 weeks after verification. As of date is 3/13. And I know I’m weekly. I only ever see changes Friday mornings. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed.
Filed on 2/3 no bars and still processing. Finally got the ID verify letter today on 3/9
Finally heard from KY state.
When I was audited two years ago it took almost four months after the audit to get my refund. I filed in January, got the audit letter in February and then got my refund in June. Hope you get yours faster.
I updated to 0.00 Monday morning lol still no date. It’s also been over 6 weeks for me. Accepted 1/23
For those that have ever been audited How long after you uploaded all your documents was it that you had a change and your refund released ! They tell me they have 30 days but im hoping it moves quicker.
Now here’s to hoping they don’t find issue where their isn’t an issue lol never know with them
@spring: ok but both are ID verify letters correct? So your saying they differ by what the trigger is?
@Ondeerun: 5071 C meaning fraudulent 6331 meaning levy they want to take your money out of your bank u owe them
@Salavere: Congratulations!
I was told by irs agent my return has been put in resequence. Has this happened to anyone and how long does it take ?
@Salavere: when was your mail date. I have 3/10 as my mail date
@PatientlyWaiting&Lurking: you have to file that EIN taxes. If you are filing yourself, you will be promoted to enter self-employment income. Yours will be a lot of zeros, but file it anyway. You will have to pay for your filing even without income because of the form. It’s easy. I do it every year.
My refund check came today!!! 😊😊
Does anyone following this site actually know if there is a definitive difference between letters 5071C and 6331C?? I have tried to research but can’t find a clear answer
Nevermind sorry I forgot what day it was 😆
Does Transcript update tonight? or Friday night going into Saturday?
Hi Everyone! I have a quick question.
I started a business in July of 2022.
Do I have to file my personal and business together or separately?
My business has its own EIN number as well but I wasn’t quite sure how to proceed with it. Usually do my own taxes but since no revenue as of yet, im not quite sure. lol any help is appreciated, thank you!
@Cassieb: if you don’t already have an account in its.gov create one. Once logged in you can see any notifications, you likely need to verify something. They claim to send letters out but ALOT of people are not getting them and have to request a 2nd letter.
@NVDIV: that’s exactly me. It’s super fun playing this game with the IRS this year. It just doesn’t make sense.
all these years i was with another tax filing company i never got any hold ups and now i’m with turbo tax i’ve been held up 2 times, in 2021 and this year (id verify). Not sure if this is related. With the other company i had my pin # locked into my account, but i don’t recall needing a pin with TT, plus i did not upload my id either neither had i done the id.me account, only the old irs acct setup plus i have my credit files locked, as well. I guess these are things to ask ourselves when it comes to being selected to verify identity.
@BB8: sounds like you got that 10-week hold going on (not sure, just hypothesizing here). It happened to me 2 years ago. it got accepted, and never moved and i had heard about people being randomly selected for the 10 week hold and sure enough at the 10th week it was released and i got my refund (april 21)….no codes, no letters no nothing and i never called.
@Discouraged, 1-800-829-1040
Ok. Long post with details in hopes you all can give me some light at the end of the tunnel. I filed on February 8th. Accepted by IRS on the same day. I have ACTC on my return. WMR has consistently shown “return received” on the 1st bar since about February 13th. Never changed since then.
I called IRS today……1-800-829-1040. Here’s how I got to a human….and I called today about 2:10 EST.
Option 1 – English
Option 2 – Questions on Personal Income Tax
Option 1 – Forms Filed/Submitted
Option 3 – Tax History
Option 2 – Tax History
It then asked for my SSN.
Then “HOLD” for additional questions.
IRS Rep picked up about 3 minutes into hold time.
Verified my personal information and then put me on about a 5 minute hold. When she came back she told me my file went into Resolution Department on 2/8 (Same day it was received by IRS) and that maybe a CP-12 letter would be mailed, but she couldn’t tell if one had or will be sent. Advice was to wait 10 weeks from IRS receive date…..If I call back then and nothing has changed, then could be 10 more weeks because they are busy or a lot of people may have the same issue. Basically…..doesn’t seem like they have a real idea of when it could or would be resolved.
My question is: Has anyone been through this and got a refund semi soon? I know we all want our refunds back as soon as possible, but just looking for some light at the end of the tunnel.
@Meme: does anyone know what number to call about my ammeded return
@NVDIV, I am in the same situation as you. As of date on transcript 03/06/23. Process date on transcript 3/20/23. I have no clue no more what date means what’s next? Have not been update for the last two weeks. Cycle code 20230903.
@570 Go Away: yup and when they sent me the letter it said I had to do nothing else. But it didnt show up on my transcripts that they ever sent it.
