key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Cantcatchabreak: that’s definitely what I’m hoping happens. That’s best case scenario at this point. Hopefully she was just saying two weeks so I wouldn’t call back the next day 😂
@Stella: they might update the address before they even mail the check so hopefully you want have any delays other than waiting For the check to be mailed out. I mean if you gave your address over the phone then I can’t see why it’s not being put in the system at the time. But irs has their own set of rules.
@cendi: no do not verify again. It may cause a problem. As long as you got your successful outcome then you just have to wait it out. I iD verified on 2/23 over the phone and the lady told me everything went through ok. I didn’t update that Friday the 24th because it was just too soon after doing the id verify but I update the following Friday 3/3 with a refund date of 3/10. Waiting for a ck to be mailed. And trust and believe that 90% of people ID verify you are getting checks in the mail this year. Idk why
@V: No.
I had same thing happen . After 4hrs on hold I got told it takes 60 days
@cendi: I had to verify both ways I did it online and on the phone.
@Ondeerun: if you already did your id verify you should receive your 💰 in the mail it should come in 2 weeks or sooner. Anytime you have id verify they will only send you a check in the mail..
I file my taxes February 13 2023 when I’m going to get it
@cendi: So after being on hold for an hour, the agent I spoke with said that if the other agent was incorrect that the system hadn’t acknowledged the verification yet, as it takes a week or two to show up in the system. He also said that if I were to verify again, the system could kick it out and not recognize it, restarting the process and the nine weeks.
Should I go ahead and verify on the phone? Wait it out? as of date is 2/20. I verifyed online on March 1, 2023. I am weekly(I think, I’ve always updated on fridays), no movement this past friday on transcripts.
Any input is appericated.
My refund was accepted feb 10th and I end says my return is delayed and when I called they said my return is in the errors department. I have no letters sent out ..nothing anyone familiar with this issue
My refund was accepted feb 10th and I ent says my return is delayed and when I called they said my return is in the errors department. I have no letters nothing anyone familiar with this issue
Have asked already never really saw reply…. Filed 1/23 accepted 1/24 after maybe 10 days got message about delay.. then maybe a week later got ID verify letter did that successfully. No movement since then called spoke to IRS agent yesterday she said after ID verify I was put back in on 3/1 and should wait 6 weeks anyone have any similar experience. Is six weeks realistic or just IRS “safespeak” ??
@Cantcatchabreak: yes when I called back on Monday she updated my address. While I was on the phone with her I logged into my online account and did not see any changes. So I asked her when it would be updated to where I can see it. She said “oh it’s not showing yet because it takes 4-6 weeks to actually process.” I said OMG thats insane. So then she said they typically see it in 2 weeks if there are no other issues. At this point it will come when it comes.
I file my tax February 13 when will I get it
@Cantcatchabreak: I know. I hope this is the first and last year I have to deal with this
@Sameboat: I noticed my account number was missing the last 3 numbers. I used FreeTax too.
Can someone who has 570 received a letter from IRS saying they don’t need any additional information. How long after did u get refund plz any help thanks
Goodmorning All Has Any One With A March 20th As Of Date Seen Any Movement?
@Stella: I have the same exact mail date by March 10 which I opted for DD but for some reason doing the ID verify is switching people to a manual check instead.
@Stella: I completely agree. They verified my address as well and the routing and checking number on my return which is my tax preparer info so since I’m getting a check now I gotta turn around and send the tax preparer the fees. I believe if the check gets returned since it’s probably going to your old address then it takes another 2 weeks to receive it. We’re you able to correct the address on your return when you spoke to them
I actually cannot believe still on processing…accepted 1/30. Review 2/6 back to processing 2/14. Any know when they update? Is it Wednesday? Anyone know what time? I always remember checking early in the morning but I thought I read they update in the afternoon?!
@Discouraged: call these numbers theses are the the checks print from. Tell them that you are awaiting a refund from over a year ago. Say I just want to k is if a check has been mailed out for whatever amount of dollars provide your name SSN and address. If they try to say we don’t do that hang up and call to speak to someone else. They are human people someone should help.

@Discouraged: same! I did an amendment and April will be one year. I had to do an appeal. I spoke with someone yesterday that said I have an appointment this month to go over everything and I have a letter coming in the mail about it.
@cantcatchabreak: yes exactly same situation for me. I wish they would have changed my address because even when I verified the gentleman asked my address, I told him and then I said but I filed under my old address because I recently moved so he asked for the old one. I understand these are people but I also think somethings are common sense. When he switched me over to check being sent why not change the address it’s being sent to since we discussed this extensively on the phone “not having an impact on anything” 😑
@Sheila La: yes mine was switched to manual refund also. That’s so annoying. My issue is I moved like two weeks after filing my taxes so now the address they are sending the check to isn’t correct. It’s so frustrating because I never asked for a check and when verifying my information I even said to them it goes to a third party first I’m not sure what they’re checking and routing information is but I can tell you mine which should also be on my return. The guy confirmed he saw that and confirmed everything was ok. I verified 2/16. Updated on 2/24 (because I’m a weekly) with ddd of 3/10. On 2/25 the WMR says a check will be mailed by 3/10 so immediately I called on Monday. The woman stated she confirmed my address but it would take two weeks to update. 😑
@Discouraged: Last year I had a major delay because of wage verification. I read on a different site that if you go to the irs website and make a payment to your account it puts you back into processing. I thought it was crazy and I had never heard of it before. I tried and made a $5 payment and waited. Nothing… Then I went into my online account and saw that my transcripts were finally filled in and my 570 was stuck and the processing date hadn’t changed in months. I decided to try and make another payment and literally 2 days later FINALLY saw movement on my account and it was approved and released within a week. I was so frustrated with the BS run around that I was willing to try anything. Good luck I hope this helps!
Did anyone update ? On Facebook it’s quiet so I’m surprised no many have
@NVDIV: you and I are in the same spot, right? You have all the 3-6 dates and the 570 but no code for any letters sent or anything?
I have been waiting on my 2021 ammended tax return for over a year. It says it was completed on 12/16/2022. I am owed a check for over 10,000. Everytime I call Irs I get 3 to 6 weeks from Jan 27. I’m so fed up I don’t know what to do. I check my account once a week to see if they have mailed it.
Can Anybody please help me
@570 Go Away: Still nothing on my end as well
@Me: I filed January 29th. Got the 570 letter saying I didn’t need to do anything back in mid February I’d guess and haven’t heard anything since. No movement on transcripts or anything. My processing date, 570 code date, as of date were all March 6th. So since I’m weekly I’m going to wait till Friday and see if any changes happen, if not I’ll finally call and see what I can find out
@Stella: same thing happened to me. i just posted my story a few min ago.
@Sheila la: i filed jan 20th but had to wait till jan 23rd to be excepted which was opening day. had 1 bar saying IS being processed until jan 27th and then went to no bars with STILL being processed. Blank transcripts and Didnt know what was going on until I received ID verify ltr 4883C on Feb 23rd. Verified over the phone that same day because you cannot verify online with 4883C. Well that was a Thursday which means it was too late to update that friday. However I updated the following Friday to 846 refund due 3/10 with all transcripts filled in. Im getting a ck mailed
@Annnn: ok. That’s pretty quick. Hopefully mines move as fast as well.
@Stella: you can have the post office hold your mail from the old address! That’s what I did.
@TeeDee44: I had to verify too! I also was accepted on the 24 with free tax USA. Then it proceeded to process again and got a refund date….however they mailed me a check because something was wrong with tax USA routing and account number.
@Stella: I just called a second time and was told that my refund was switched to manual refund and it said I would see an update in two weeks on the website and then within 10 calendar days after that, I should receive my check in the mail. My bars are gone on WMR and it says we have your return it is being processed and that’s all it says no error, codes or anything on transcript no letters . It’s just odd because before that I had called earlier in the day and the girl she didn’t really tell me anything and she said she couldn’t see anything and she said to just wait 60 days that my return was being reviewed so I don’t know who to believe or what to do next. It’s interesting how 2 different agent look at the Same exact account and give 2 totally different answers
🔺️🔺️TAX ADVICE NEEDED 🔺️🔺️
I filed income taxes in January, got a cash advance of💵 $750.00 and walked the path. Path was lifted and I got a direct deposit of 💵$78.80. In my simple mind I’m thinking maybe they overtook some fees so I was anticipating the big direct deposit to come through at any moment. I waited a few days and decided to call my tax preparer, she said why didn’t you tell me that you owed so now I was confused I have never owed the IRS now state is a different thing, they take my check every year.
After getting no where with the IRS, I pulled my records and saw over 💲💲$5,000 was taken and applied to 2021. In 2021 I filed, but after waiting months for deposit realized that the hold up was my casino “winnings”, so I did a amendment and my full taxes was released,
By me doing amendment they took back over💸💸 $5,000, but my issue is technically it waa not “winnings “, my profit/loss statement has me positive $550 💰💰not the thousands I had to report.
What can I do to get my return back. How can I itemize my loss if that is possible?
Any input is appreciated.
@Gabbygabbby: I did my 1040x 2/14 and 3/3 already made the adjustment. when I call there is a deposit for 3/13. what I don’t know if it’s because of check or dd
