key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

I filed since 02/17, accepted the same day. I still have all my bars on wmr. What could be the hold up?
My journey:
Filed on opening day January 23rd. Very optimistic. Used free tax usa. No cost. Accepted January 24th. Wmr shows one bar. After one week of showing one bar wmr switches to “still being processed”. I start to stress. The words still is an irritant. This is my status for 3 weeks before I receive a letter to verify ID. I do it online and it’s accepted immediately. After 2 weeks wmr switches to “is being processed”. Progress? Who knows. For the past two weeks I have been reading about other people’s nightmare experiences and relaying it to my own. Been pulling out my hair as I see that many of us are in the same boat with still no progress, nothing showing on wmr not even the status bar, and nothing on transcripts. Just in the dark. (Open bottle of antidepressants). According to recent comments it looks like there is possibility of updating this Friday. Fingers crossed. (Putting bottle away-for now and lighting joint). Waiting
@Mili17: you need to call. There is a hold on your taxes. I had the same exact issue until I called.
I received a letter today saying I was under review but they didn’t need anything from me. It was 570 code. Can anyone tell me what happens next plz…
@Cantcatchabreak: when did u file
Filed 1/26/23
Accepted 1/26/23
Received letter to verify 2/22/23
Verified 2/24/23 around that time
Online and phone.
Updated about 5 days later.
Deposit date on Transcript 3/08/23
Just received my deposit around 6pm. Fees taken out. I bank with Wells Fargo.
2nd Request: Hey everyone! I had 2 w-2,s and on one I made an error. On my withholdings I accidentally added an additional 1, so 1,166 but it should be 166. Should I amend or will the IRS correct this? I appreciate any help. I currently have TC570 and I’m daily. I did receive IRS letter 4464C the additional do nothing for 60 days. Thanks in advance.
I amended my return via efile. Does anyone know if it still takes 12 weeks, even though it’s efiled?
@Mili17, I have the same situation, filed and accepted 2/10/23, received the same message on WMR, received letter about delayed 60 days, need review closer, as of date on transcript 3/6/23 but process date 3/20/23. Still shows 521 message.
Ugh, this year is a mess!
Anyone else switched over to check being mailed after ID verify with 4883c letter and now the check is being sent out to the wrong address. I called IRS to update address and agent states it will take two weeks for system to reflect address change. If this has happened to anyone, how long did it take to receive check once address was updated. I have mail forwarding but the post office is stating they won’t forward a government check.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Stella
@Dessie413: yeah I got my state too as well . I’m stressing out now since they didn’t really tell me anything there is no notices sent or on file so they just get to hang on to our money til they get around to looking at our returns . Its crazy do the right thing you pay your taxes you don’t do illegal activity and so therefore you don’t really expect to have your returns get pulled for no reason at all. Then the fact that they just give you some BS answer to what’s taking so long when they’re the ones that urges to file early like they can do whatever they want if they want to add another 60 days and another 60 days after the 60 days they will I really hope this clears itself up and the next update gives a little bit more insight into what is going on in. Please if anybody else was told 60 days while they review it and your WMR says we have your returning that’s being processed please comment
@TaurusGrl: YES THANK GOD. So happy yours loaded for you as well. Thank you Chime, and Sam. Thank you for keeping me posted as well God bless stay safe
Hello all. I filed 02/17 and accepted same day. Transcript updated to 2022 on Friday but are empty. WMR was still being to: “We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible. “ Tax topic 152 still there. Any suggestions Or comments? .
@Sheila La: I am! I called the irs too and the rep said the exact same thing to me. I filed 1/31… but I got my state refund this past Saturday
@JIJ: It just hit!!!!! Yours should be in the way!!!!!
@Sheila La: you might update friday. I had the same thing last week. Is being processed, no bars, all transcripts blank with as of 2/20/23 and bam I updated with refund of 3/10 since I’m getting a check and all transcripts filled in Friday morning. But of course I had to id verify before I went back to is being processed. It was saying is still being processed at first .
@JIJ: Hopefully it’s coming soon.
@TaurusGrl: that’s why I checked the times and the last 5 years my Chime has not loaded until after 4pm the day before deposit date. So hopefully this year is the same
@JIJ: I go through mywisely. They post early too but my refund hasn’t posted yet.
Has anyone with DD 3/8 and uses Chime received their refund yet?
SBTG updated this morning and they have received my refund as well as taken out their fees, also states date received which is today, also says amount sent to you yadda yadda.
Went back through my transaction history on Chime to see when, and what time I received past years refunds and each year my refund has posted the day before the date the IRS said it would be deposited. Each time it posted was after 4pm. So hopefully that is the case for this year as well. Hopefully any of this helps anyone.
What does a letter saying your under review mean?
Update – wmr says we have received your return and it is being processed . No bars no Tt transcript codes 150 766 and 768 .
Filed 2/6 As of date 3/6 and processing date 2/27 no ddd
I just called finally and I got a hold of someone and the lady researched my account couldn’t find any notices sent or anything that gave her any information she could give me and she said that it was pulled for review and I needed to wait 60 days she doesn’t know why or if it will resolve on its own so basically I have no idea what’s going on so keep this in mind if you’re not getting much information from your transcripts or your WMR says what mine says you might want to call She told me no noticed have been sent. I haven’t received any info . This really sucks. If anyone has any experience with this situation please let me know
Thank you guys for all the help. I was able to speak to someone within 6 minutes and found out my return was on hold to check the errors. They had to manually put it back in line for processing and now in looking at 45 days to process.
I just wanted to update those going through the ID verification process. I verified online on 3/1/2023. I got the confirmation notice. I noticed no movement this past cycle as my as-of date is still 2/20. I called and spoke to a rep, who informed me that it was still unresolved and transferred me to the tpp department. Currently on hold; I will update later.
@keiag34 When you call the 1040 number you have to press 1 for English then when it gives you the next set of options press 2 then press 1 and then it says something about tax history you need to select that one it’ll be 3 and then it’ll say something about tax history again press 2.
(1,2,1,3,2) then you should get an actual person on the line.
@KeiaG34: I have a link that has the numbers for various departments.
https://igotmyrefund.com/talk-to-human-at-irs/
I logged into the verify site with irs and it says i do not need to verify.
Spoke to IRS today very nice young lady. I was informed that after I ID verified my return was resubmitted into the system as of March 1 and the process began again. I am assuming when she says it will now take up to 6 weeks that that is standard speak and more than likely will process in two weeks or so like normal. Anyone having similar experience or thoughts I would love to hear from you….
What is a good number for irs. I call the number ending in 1040 and I can’t get to anyone.
@KeiaG34: You might try going to irs.gov.idverify and see if it will let you go in and enter a code. That has been an issue for quite a few this year.
I just wanted to give an update on the AUDIT I received last year I finally got my check in the mail this paid Sunday! My 846 was for 2/27/23!
I tried to call. Lol
I tried to can yesterday and did not get to anyone. I going to try to call again today.
@KeiaG34: Have you called? That’s a long time to be sitting with no movement.
I amended my return via efile. Does anyone know if it still takes 12 weeks even though it’s efiled?
My transcripts are still blank with no return filed and as of date 02/20/2023. WMR has delayed message with tax topic 152. No movement at all.
@TheQueenofBee: As of dates are just that, as of dates. System sets a date out for something to be done by, and if it can’t after 3 cycles, then it stops trying, and it manually has to be restarted. My source is from the IRS manual, which is a pain in the butt to decipher but a great source of information, lol.
@Kim: well that is supposed to be the mail by date however I have been on a couple of blogs where people had Friday mail dates but they received the money that monday after. So either the irs is mailing them before the Friday or the mail is scheduled to deliver within a 2 day time frame.
@TheQueenofBee: I’ll add my informed delivery shows me my letter from irs is here today ! So yay for that now for the question has anyone had to fill out a cp75 notice and have it move quickly
Has anyone ever had a review/audit for the earned income credit ? And had to wait for a cp75 form and send them in the info requested ? And had it done in a timely manner ?
That’s what is going on with me , go figure the one year I paid my fees upfront to get my refund quickly and stuck here lol my luck ! But ya waiting on that letter and wondering if anyone else has had to do this and if it’s hopeful at all to be a quick process ! Not sure why it had me fill out a form to requalify when they denied my return and it said I qualified again so not sure why I have to do this too but I’m hoping the letter comes quick cuz I still don’t have my notice yet that was mailed on the 17th lol …
Also my as of date code on the 971 and refund freEze and tax return is 3/06 and the lady on the phone told me my notice is set to be sent 3/06 but will be sent out the Friday before for a Monday so according to her that’s what the as of date means on those notices atleast . Google tells me as of doesn’t mean when the system plans to have you done by and it’s actually just when stuff will post to the master file so just so I put there for as of dates
