key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

Still no movement for me either. Processing date 3/06
570 date 3/6
And 971 date 3/13
So frustrating I wish I knew what to do maybe I should call.
Have not up dated yet it is 9 am here will I
@Sheila_33: yes it’s an adjustment they adjusted my refund by $600 it’s on the transcript. My advocate also said it’s a mathematical error so I’m hoping it turns into an 846 next week. 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
@Cantcatchabreak: It could be mailed anytime since they’ve changed when they’re sending out checks. I’d set my sights on seeing a check around the 13th and be pleasantly surprised if it comes sooner.
@Starr: Well I was hoping you’d see an 846 but I guess they’re gonna make you wait some more. The 570 is a review code, they’re looking at either income or credits. 971 may be a review letter or could even be an adjustment to the credits. If it’s an adjustment, then the 570 could lift next update and hopefully an 846
@Jenn Leah 13: I did my IDV 2/15 and i’m being mailed a check today 3/3
@Jenn Leah 13: I ID verified on 2/23 got the letter the same day and I updated this morning on my transcripts with a DD of 3/10. For some reason people who are having to ID verify are getting checks instead of DD. And I know mines will be a check cause normally DD’s fall on Wednesdays. But I will know for sure if it is a check when I check WMR in the morning
Happy Friday to everyone!!!!
Hopefully everyone gets their funds, checks, letters…… and have a great weekend.
Still waiting for my check from eps financial pathward Bank for JHEWITT been waiting since 2/23rd for it it took a week for them put it just into the mail WTH…. SMH
Filed Tuesday the 21st. Transcripts as of 6am still showed N/A. Weekly guy here. Guess I’ll wait another week.
@Gemineye♢Beauty: Obviously it is for a reason.
@Starr: Good Morning. Ours did the same thing. No movement and no update since 2/17, then this morning transcripts populated with every detail and as of changed from 3/06 to 3/20 with 570 code and 3/20 beside of it. WMR nor IRS2Go have yet to update at all.
Where’s my refund page- shows accepted and being process, but on my IRS account shows Tax Return is Not Process. Should I be concerned..
transcripts updated this morning with a ddd of 3/8
Ugh! So I decided to call the IRS because I was accepted 2/6 and this morning I STILL didn’t update on my transcripts🤬 Good thing I cashed because apparently I was randomly selected for ID verify and they never mailed the stupid letter, so she said to give it 14 days from today to arrive! 2 MORE WEEKS?!?! JUST FOR THE LETTER?! This is just my luck that they never sent the letter! The only reason I didn’t call on the 28th (which would be 22 days after being accepted) was because I’m a weekly & I thought I’d be updating on transcripts today. I’m so glad I decided to call!
For those who have had to verify identity, how long did it take to get your DDD after verifying?
@TeeDee44: I’m in the sane boat.
I give up. This is ridiculous. Going through the ID verify crap. Did ID verify 2 weeks ago. As of date changed from 2/13 to 3/13. That’s it. That’s the only change I’ve seen. No update today. Meanwhile I’m seeing people who JUST did the ID verify with ddd. Who is in charge of this? I filed from opening day!!! WTH. Why do they do this to me EVERY year? I’m so sick of them
@Meshkay: I’m assuming that the 10 weeks for me would be April 15. But since they don’t have answers I will just call every week. By the way the last one did say they noted my account to call next week if no change. Wtf but you can’t see or say anything about my return release date or no movements.
@Gapeach30: ya I just got off the phone so stupid I’m being audited to recertify for the earned income credit literally nothing I can do that was just telling me I could call basically to get the reason why
Once again bad news I thought my wmr updating last night with a pin and what I need to have was good news and nope I’m under audit I have a cp75 form going out today ( still haven’t got a form that was sent out 2 weeks ago so that’s nice ) I have to recertify for the earned income credit cuz I was audited in 2017 and had to pay it back. So that’s nice I’m sure it’s going to be atleast a couple of months ? Hoping someone else that had to do the same once can shed some hope however and maybe tell me their process went quick ???
@TheQueenofBee: I will wait to call again Monday morning. Just to see what script they tell me then.
@TheQueenofBee: Smh this doesn’t make any sense that so many people have to verify or just the run around with answers. I actually log in with me I’d.me info so at this point it’s just bullshit. I hope we all get resolution sooner than later.
They took the same offset from both federal and state, what do I do about this?
@Gapeach30: I had the same situation. I did ID verification on Monday and finally got an update today. I didn’t get any notification or a letter. It could be coincidental, but maybe you can try that.
@Gapeach30: ya isn’t it crazy how much each rep will tell u different I was told multiple different things too so I stopped calling and just waiting still haven’t got my letter 2 weeks later now lol I was told last week that I didn’t need to do anything they don’t need anything from me let the process happen but finally my wmr last night updated and it said I’m under a review which was good to hear since I have the 420 audit code on my transcripts means they aren’t auditing me yet and they give me a list of things to have when I call and a pin and my friend that had a random review last year told me that is exactly what hers was and they just had to ask some questions like what was ur last year agi what’s ur social etc so I’m hoping thats what it is I’m about to call them now I wonder if I can clear that up today if I can still update today or if it won’t take effect till next week but just had to tell ya I feel
U going thru the same thing as u with being told different shit each time one day I sat on hold from 11 am to 8 pm I kept Getting disconnected agyer waiting 2 hours it was so frustrating
I had to ID verify last Thursday 2/23 with none of my transcripts filled in and wmr saying still being processed. Bank Acct info verified with irs rep. Wmr changed from still processing to is processing yesterday. Updated this morning with all transcripts filled in with 846 refund for 3/10/23 which means I got a check coming because my refund dates usually fall on Wednesdays. I guess wmr will update in the morning showing either DD or check mailed. Does anyone know if the check will be mailed on the 10th or possibly before the 10th if it is indeed a check. Sheila_33 or anyone please 😔
@Sheila_33: good morning I finally had some movement on transcripts today .. didn’t get the magical 846 but I truly wasn’t expecting it this week. But I did get codes 570 and 971 with dates 3/20. Do you have any insight on this ?? Thanks in advance
@Gapeach30: yes I am I just talked to my 3rd representative and she stated that they’re experiencing a delay and to give it 10 weeks from 2/6 which is the day that I was accepted the first rep said I had an error the second rep said I had errors smh
I received my state before federal and that’s never happened still waiting for federal transcripts to fill in
@Gapeach30: same here exactly the same
Gm. Glad for those who have updated. Filed 1/23 tax topic 152 1 bar accepted the same week. Updated to no tax topic still being processed refund date when available 3 weeks later. As of today n/a on transcript except 2022 wages but blank. Called 3 times each person gave different answers no letter. One said error wait 10 weeks , the 2nd said it was in error but has moved a long no issues with refund give it time to process, the 3rd on wed said call back next week if nothing updates. This is bs I’m just tired of the run around. Never received path message. This is just ridiculous. I will try tax advocate today. Anyone in this situation?
Finally so movements. Fields 1/27, the PATH message was gone and replaced with a delayed massage. Transcript N/A until today. 846 code for 3/8. Topic 152 is back today.
Has anyone from Ga gotten their state? I don’t why it’s taking them so long.
@Ohio Girl: Sorry you had to do an ID verify but pleased to see it moved pretty fast. Sometimes those verifies seem to take forever to update. Congratulations!
@Shanshan: Transcripts can update all day. Check again in a few hours.
@Kiki8908: same just blank with an as of 3/6
@Thequeenofbee: Praying you get some great news soon!
