When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. @Tiffany868686: Get in your car and drive to the nearest branch, even if it’s three hours away.
Banks will not take the risk of releasing a tax refund that doesn’t clearly belong to the account holder.
If the names or information don’t match, the system will flag it and reject the deposit.
At that point, you end up creating a bigger problem to fix.
@Tiffany868686: I’m in SC it one here if your closer… I would make that drive so you wouldn’t have to wait on a check which will take weeks to receive. When the bank rejects them…

Just WOW. Still no 2025 placeholders except for wage and income. No notices. WMR “still processing”. 1 bar. No topics. Wish I had some sign of life it’s being worked on.
So Jackson Hewitt got my deposit on Friday night and it shows that it was deposited into my account but because one pay does not process over the weekend it’ll be processed tomorrow so if anyone is looking for information, that is what I found out

@Sheila_33: hi do you know what it means if my where’s my refund page says we have received your return and it is being processed if you filed a complete and accurate return you will receive it within 21 days no further action is needed from you at this time.

Many year lurker here, finally have a question. My transcript shows a deposit date of 03-09. WMR shows deposit date of 02-24. I did use TurboTax with fees taken out depositing to CK. Any suggestions/ideas which day my refund will actually come in?

@Tiffany868686: if I were y’all I would drive to a pmc branch immediately bc it will most likely be rejected I rather drive 2 hrs out my way now then have to wait 2-4 weeks for bank to reject it and wait for IRS to issue a check

Didn’t finish last post sorry. When should I expect my refund in my account?
Got my 846 Wednesday morning. Then 898 Friday morning. 846 is 3/9 processing 2/23. Had offset paid. Wmr says being sent to bank 2/23. Offset line for paid offset says 2/23. Turbo tax with credit karma. No advance or 5 days early. Fees paid from refund.
@Jjay86: last year I opted in for the 5 days early option, but I didn’t get my return until my DDD. Cross River bank sent my refund around noon.
