key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.

@Sheila_33: Thank you!!!
@Shelia_33: Good morning! So I filed and was accepted on 01/28/2026. Last Friday acct transcript updated to all zeros with an as of date of 2-23/2026 and WMR on Saturday with return status unavailable. Well, no update yesterday, still have the 2-23-26 as of date and WMR still states refund status unavailable. Thanks!
I filed my taxes with turbo tax on 1/30. I do owe student loans. So I called the offset number and they are supposed to take them. But now I heard they are pausing it now. I’m confused about this. Are they taking them still?
Happy Blood Sucking Day😝
Matt7650: I think you would have updated to a 971 on the transcript but honestly, this year is not normal. What’s the date beside the 570?
@MzB81: That is a ways out. Are you able to access transcripts online?
@Sheila_33: I will keep you updated. Do you think the letter to verify is not coming now since the message disappeared from my notifications on the irs website?
@Sheila_33: yes
@Tonicmo88: Most likely you’re waiting for the path freeze to lift. Unfortunately, if you’re not able to see your transcript in real time, there may be codes that could keep that from releasing the refund.
@Sheila_33: thank you. I got my refund on feb 20th last year hoping for the same this year
@MzB81: Your Wmr is stating 2/24?
@Confused in Ohio: Year, week 05 and day 03. You’re a daily processor.
What does this cycle code mean
20260503
@Matt7650: The deductions are possibly what they’re looking at, since the w2’s can be reconciled internally. Whatever you claimed as deductibles will most likely be what they want to verify and since they’re not sending a letter, and you say you’ve had similar situations in the past, they might just reference those past returns, compare and release the refund. Good luck, keep us updated please.
@The Truth: I got the 846 on transcript I saw Friday for 3/2, but this morning WMR said I’ll receive by 2/24
Filed and accepted late January. WMR is now showing PATH message as of this morning. Does this mean I am done processing or no?
@Sheila_33: w2s updated. I also own a business and a farm. This year showed a large deduction as we spent around 150k on farm equipment, however has had same senerio with other businesses in the past with no issues. So our total tax we paid was like 32k however with our deductions refund is around 23k which is normal for us on most years.
