key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

@cici22: does yours say verify identity or verify return?
@Monee: I believe so every trans I got ends in 05
@DiddlySquatter: about 2 weeks but don’t know for sure everybody’s situation is different hopefully it’s a glitch, they ask simple questions. Good luck u can also request it on ur IRS acct.
@Relief2020: That would depend on whether you really do support him, and whether your daughter receives any financial assistance for him, etc. If she isn’t filing or claiming him and she doesn’t receive assistance, then yes. If she is receiving assistance for him, then no.
@Lil bit in nc: I had this happen to me with a check from the VA and bank took it so yes they can and will take it and they will not let you close account out as long as you owe them and no the irs will send it to account on your return there’s no way to change that perhaps you can talk to tax advocate to see if they can help but don’t think so
@KUKLA: thank you!
If I can see my 2025 transcript’s does that mean I’m just now waiting for path to lift so I can get my DDD? Turbo Tax(fees already paid and 5 day early option)EIC and CTC. Thanks for any insight on this.
Hi I’m back for this year!! When are we expecting deposits for PATHERS
So, my husband and I filed and were accepted the 30th. I received an email from IDme stating that my ID was verified and I didn’t have to do anything. Then, I look on the IDme and now, boom , they need to verify our identity. Anyone else experiencing this? What, besides waiting on the letter, can we expect?
@Relief2020: you can claim grandbaby
@Vee2021: how long did it take for you to get your letter in the mail from when you were accepted?
@OhioBred87: do you have 570 and 971 or is the 570 by itself?
@Vee2021: I got super depressed when you said you see 2024 because mine said 2021 all day. But I looked and now mine says 2024 too!!!!!!!!! I hope that means it’s our turn. lol
@Vee2021: now I’m wondering if only having 2021 means something because when you got put back into processing you got 2024. You’re a weekly right?
Hi good evening. Question. Here. My grandson was born last year him and my 23yo daughter have been staying with me since may 2025 she doesn’t work I basically support her and the baby. am I able to claim him as a dependent. If so will I be required to show proof of address or has anyone claimed a grandbaby and was accepted with no issues?
Is there anyone here who had transcripts with all 0’s last week but have updated this week to being normal? I got all 0’s last Thursday on my Account Transcript and I’ll most likely update again tomorrow. I’m getting nervous because 2 years ago I had 0’s on my transcripts for 2-3 weeks!
@Christi23: thanks
Pather here accepted 1/22/ Transcript finally updated too all good codes and a 570 code? Is that a good or bad thing? I have yet received any letter nor are there showing on my Irs.gov account
Hey hope everyone is in good health and taking it easy tonight.
So I ID verified yesterday he gave me that 9wks BS, excuse my launguge.🤦♀️ after having 2021 for about a week today shows 2024 summary but 2025 still not popping. The WMR still has tha message of the the yellow caution about review and letter but I did all that yesterday around 5:49pm before that call center close at 6pm …… I mean I’m moving but not how I want 😂
Wooosah 🤷♀️🤦♀️
@Sheila_33: if I’m not mistaken an offset can only be paid once the 846 code is placed. Therefore my guess is that it was placed today and that my transcripts will update tonight with my refund date. The offset line never said a paid by date. It just says no offsets found. But this morning there was an offset.
@Buffalo!!: Me! Will Wmr update for use tonight? I’m a daily now
@Lil bit in nc: if you have a charge off there isn’t anything you can do the bank needs their money one way or another. There is no way to stop it if you did direct deposit.
@Lil bit in nc: Have you tried going into your tax account and see if you can change the deposit information? Otherwise, I don’t know of any other way. Happy Birthday, hope it all works out.
@Momof2girls1boy77: @Lovergirl is correct, if that offset is showing paid and gives an as of date, you may very well see an update soon. And you don’t have path credits, so you could see a possible update Friday morning. If ya do, I believe that will be the fastest id verify resolution I’ve ever seen. Good luck!
Can anyone help me please?
