key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

@Lovergirl: If you have a payment agreement, they will pause the payments for a hardship but you would need to see if a tax advocate could help with them not taking the refund on an emergency basis.
How do you know if you’re weekly or daily if trans didn’t update?
@Lovergirl: They take your refund whether you apply for hardship or have a payment plan setup. There’s no stopping them garnishing money.
@Jenny04: If you’re weekly, our ddd will be Wednesday the 25th but no holds bank will likely see sooner.
Hey, all. I am back. And yup, my son has to verify his identity. First time filer and he needs to verify. Thank you! :)
@Lovergirl:
@Sheila_33: so it’s looking like a DDD of 2/23 then Sheila since I’m a weekly and pather?
Can I apply for a hardship if I have a offset and they plan on taking my refund 🙁
I have an as of 2/16 and processing of 2/23. Just curious what’s the difference.
@secrutf15: It is, but its happened before in previous years.
@Sheila_33: is it weird that I’m still on the first bar though? I’ve still not gotten the path message
@daedae: The as of date is placed to resolve an action by that date, whether it be a refund, review, audit, etc. Not a refund date though we do believe first dailies to post an 846 after path lifts will coincidentally have that date.
@secrutf515: You’re just waiting on the path to lift on the 15th to process and place the 846.
@Amy19: keep posted please. Hopefully update should be tonight into tomorrow morning
what does the as of date mean? is that going to be your DD? got accepted on 1/28 EIC trans showing nothing really
@Rubicon46: Hi how are you?I went online last week and in my notes it said we need to verify your return in order to finish processing.It said I need a control number.My letter came today.I went into my account put in the control number. It ask me did I file a return.Its ask me for line 11 on my tax return. It ask me for line 35..It ask me if I paid someone to do my return yes or no.It ask me for the last four numbers for my deposit. And I click continue.It said verified successfully. That was it..Hope this helps..Good luck to you
@Denise: Hi Denise. I think we’re similar. I filed 1/28 and accepted 1/29.
Fees taken out of refund. My account transcript is showing 2025 and all 0’s
My as of date is 2/23. I’ve been a week for the past 10 years also. So we won’t see an update until Friday morning. Wmr is still showing 1 bar. So far things are looking normal. I’ll keep u posted if things change. Good luck!
I figured out that my cycle is 03. I’m a daily. I have EIC and was accepted on 1/20. I have codes 150, 806, and 768. Hopefully my stuff will update tomorrow!
Last years refund hit my tradional bank on Tuesday Feb 25, does that make me daily or weekly and does that put me around the 23rd of this year with path?
UPDATE: My federal refund has hit my bank account!
@Yandy00: hi there, I’m waiting on a 4883C letter to verify. I’m trying to determine if mine will have an online option to verify. I think some letters allow online verify but others require a telephone call in to verify. And, yes I’d love to know what they ask if you care to share:)
