key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

Good morning Sheila, Yes, mine is still as of 02-16. So hopefully it will finish up soon. At least there were movement for me.
@Sheila_33: good morning
@jemar707: thank you for replying
Good morning everyone. Looks like things are starting to move a little. Remember, when you check those transcripts, even if they are not filled out, check and see if the date is the still the “as of” the 16th. If that hasn’t changed, you still haven’t updated this morning. A few that have seen movement, aren’t fully populated yet, so we’ll most likely start seeing them in waves. IRS decided to drink a pot of coffee first, now we just wait, lol
Just updated for me but I still see 2021 return summary. One of mine hasn’t populated I do see all 2025 except return summary. As expected I’m 0505 weekly.
@LWBOSS: I hope so. Tax time is always anxiety filled for me lol
@Momof2girls1boy77: not just you. Mine are still blank.
All that food made me fall asleep before midnight. But still no update yet.
Is it just me or have transcripts not updated yet?
@Kisharai: wages and return transcripts loaded for me also, it’s still early but account should fill in later in the morning around 5 or 6am. So if you see return on there filled in , you should be good.
@Starchild1111: sweet I wish I was in the first batch as usual I probably won’t see any movement until next week
Still no change for me. All zeros still. Thought someone said 3am? I’m going back to sleep lol.
Hey friends looks like we meet again into the thick of it we go lol
All transcripts are up and filled accept the one NEEDING the 846 so hopefully i will see that soon so pretty sure im still a weekly
@Another Year of this Shiiiiiiiiiik: ok thanks 🙏🙏 I hope soo
@Stephen: it will not flag the system and you will still receive your refund as scheduled. You may be short a couple hundred (depending on your situation) but it’s still coming. Also they are correct, do not amend your refund until you receive funds.
Speaking from experience
Well so far, wages and return transcripts loaded in so far for me. Fingers crossed I go all the way!
@CEDES: Welcome! We love a lurker. Sometimes a status code could trigger a review (not an audit), but it’s more common to go just as plan. No need to worry.
@Lisafrombuffalogobills: I’m guessing you have a 570 so no further updates until after next week
@Momof2girls1boy77: Years and years ago it did it’s thing just like the WMR ~3am. But a few years ago it started to happen just after midnight. Looks like we are back to the 3am shift, I hope so.
Eyes up 👀
What time do transcripts usually update
