Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Good morning everyone. Looks like things are starting to move a little. Remember, when you check those transcripts, even if they are not filled out, check and see if the date is the still the “as of” the 16th. If that hasn’t changed, you still haven’t updated this morning. A few that have seen movement, aren’t fully populated yet, so we’ll most likely start seeing them in waves. IRS decided to drink a pot of coffee first, now we just wait, lol

@Stephen: it will not flag the system and you will still receive your refund as scheduled. You may be short a couple hundred (depending on your situation) but it’s still coming. Also they are correct, do not amend your refund until you receive funds.

@Stephen: I forgot to add a W-2 from another employer. Admending while your return is currently being processed will slow everything down. I have not spoken to anyone directly at the irs, but i went searching & I got the same info from all forums. You’re welcome. Look it up. There’s plenty of info about doing the admended return.

IRS tax transcripts typically update overnight, usually between midnight and 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern Time, with major updates occurring on Fridays for weekly accounts and daily for others. While updates can happen any day, the most significant changes often appear on Saturday mornings after the Friday processing.

I feel sick to my stomach right now..
After I called that bank 5x and was told I wouldn’t get a 1099C I did my taxes and I see in my informed delivery I got one coming from that bank tomorrow. It’s going to be for 6k dollars and I’m not sure what’s going to happen to my refund now bc I know it when I checked when I was doing taxes I put it in and it decreased my refund by like 1200 bucks but I didn’t file it bc I was told I was not going to get it what do I do now

    • I Got My Refund!

@Matt H: 🤣🤣🤣 I just saw your comment about cooking again. Gotta do something to keep your mind off the 846. I definitely understand that.

So I have been told different thing and when I look on the student loan site it says they will not withhold for student loans and they are preparing for the new payback bill etc. I have filed, my return has been accepted. But my loans are in default, I have contacted the student loan people and will be filling out papers to rehabilitate my loans. Definitely not in a situation to have my refund taken. Wanted to get clarification on this to make sure they were not going to take them and paused them to get this new repayment plan going and gave people a chance to make payment arrangements

@Azkidd: make an appointment to verify in person.

@Azkidd: So technically, yes, this will “hold” your 2025 refund, but only because you need to verify. Not because of a typical refund freeze, if that makes sense.

@Azkidd: The thing is, if you needed to verify for 2024 (and didn’t), you’ll likely need to verify for 2025 as well. So you’ll get 2 letters:

2024 letter sent the address on your 2024 return
(if you need to verify this year) 2025 letter sent to the address on your 2025 return

This is why I think USPS change of address will help you get both of those letters at your current address. Then you can verify for both at the same time and get your refunds.

@Azkidd: What you could do is do a USPS change of address from your old address to your new one, so all of your mail to that old address will be forwarded to the new one.

Apparently no notices haven’t even been sent out yet, so if you do the forwarding ASAP (usually takes 7-10 days to start forwarding), when they mail your 2024 verification letter, it’ll be forwarded to your new address and you can verify.

    Pro tip :)

@Azkidd: Ugh, the address thing seems to be an issue.

Tax years are handled by year, so they shouldn’t hold your 2025 refund. Especially if you don’t even owe. There’s nothing for them to hold.

The issue is that they send the letter to address listed on the return, so your 2024 return has an old address, correct? Are you saying you requested a new letter for your 2024 verification?

If my 2024 return hasn’t processed (they apparently sent a letter to verify but I never got it due to moving a month after we filed taxes and I’m just now finding out- I didn’t not owe) will they hold this years or could it process like normal? I have requested a new letter but it’s obviously going to take about a week or so to get it.
