key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a āqueueā and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
Thatās where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you donāt have to guess when your refund will hit.
Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your moneyās coming.

@mc559672: one can only hope. And I agree. Itās been very bizarre.
@Momof2girls1boy77: If it makes you feel better, I was accepted the same say you filed. Apparently the first batch got the shaft, here. Now I’m wondering if the DD will hit before any public-facing updates to trans/wmr. Like a payment and update at the same time since we’re on an update lag as weeklies. It’s technically possible to be issued an 846 code before we even see that we’ve been issued an 846 code. This year is so bizarre.
This year is really strange, the WMR updated this morning with a return approved but instead of a DDD for 02/04 as expected it gave me the date of 02/06 for a refund check to be mailed! Why would they change from the usual direct deposit to mailing a check? I am still happy but that adds at least another week until I get my money. Does anyone know what would make they change the refund method?
Well still no update got me. I filed on 1/16 and was accepted on 1/20. Thursday my account transcript popped up but itās all zeros and says no return filed. I guess I was resequenced. It would have been nice to get my deposit as Mondsybis my birthday and I was hoping for a deposit. Oh well. I guess next week. Btw for the last 4 years I have been a daily. Not sure what I am this year.
Return due date or return received is 4/15. Processing date is 2/16. Do I count the 11 weeks after 2/16 and not my accepted date to see when abouts refund would be approved?
Has anyone updated to the Path message. I havenāt
@Sheila_33: in your experience (assuming we’re resequenced), is it likely we’ll see deposits before the trans/wmr even updates? Sounds like we won’t see updates until next Friday/Saturday, but I’m wondering if the DD will hit at the same time?
Justamama88: The path credits freeze lifts February 15th.
@Sheilah: Weeklies process on Thursdays, post on transcripts Friday, and Wmr on Saturdays.
@ Spicoli yeah my boyfriend got the advance aswell threw a tax preparer but I was just nervous because thereās no notice on irs website or any codes since itās blank
When do weekly’s update next ?
Filed and Accepted 1/22 with hrblock refund approved 1/31 with deposit by 2/4.
@Sheila_33: so when do weekly’s update ?
@Celina93: mine says the same thing today but I have a regular return. I was given my turbo tax advance already so I wouldnāt be worried.
So my boyfriends transcripts are blank but in whereās my refund it says

Does anyone know what this means?
Also, he did file his two children that is 13 and 16 so I am so confused. He skipped over the path and it was approved for payment and it was an offset for Child Support but he has a direct deposit date of February 9 and it was filed on Wednesday like 4 days ago, Wednesday.
@CocoPuff: hopefully they will start accepting Monday
@Skylar: Iām in the same boat as you
So this year is so weird I did my husband taxes on Wednesday. It was approved with 846 on Thursday, today I checked it. It was approved for a direct deposit for February 9 but he has the Offset of Child Support. How was they approving stuff in two and three days like this this is crazy.
My as of date says 2/16
But it says NO RETURN FILED
I was accepted on the 23rd OF JANUARY
I have NO path message it ONLY says āIt is being processed ā
I have a 2025 account transcript with all zeros
I didnāt update to PATH am I being ID verified?
@Sheila_33: thanks my friend my past transcripts are the all fine and all my as of dates on past transcripts have not changed so hopefully all is well
Anyone with Walmart One card know when deposits usually post
For those filing with child credits, when should that be lifted? A couple weeks? It said the first of March but last year it was earlier than that.
My DD date was 02/02 but i received my refund this morning.
@CocoPuff:my transcript updated Friday to everything but the 846 cuz Iām path and today wmr updated to path message as it should. Everythingās good to go to get my 846 once path lifts . Iām weekly
@Sexy: my transcripts filled out completely yesterday, and wmr flipped to the Path message today. Will be same for me as always. Transcript will update on 2/20 with 846 for 2/27 and wmr will reflect that on 2/21. Only curiosity will be my bank. My deposits are showing quicker since they changed systems. Don’t know if related but might pop in before 27th.
@TK1: not mine no updates. im a weekly tho
