Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

When are Updates?

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@FrazierGurl: it always lifts after the 15th; that was part of the Path Act when it was put into effect.

@KYMama22: correct. Path freeze lifts after the 15th. After transcripts update, we should see updates next Friday (17th) on transcripts, WMR on Sat (18th), etc. That said, my account transcript is still blank, but as others said, it could take until 5 pm to populate–or just sit blank until next week and populate all at once. I’m just happy I at least have the account transcript showing up and no longer N/A.

I just had a thought 💭 Path doesn’t lift until mid February. Technically this is a short month since we only have 28 days. 🤞

Theory people that update last week probably will dd this evening if you paid fees upfront and people who updated today will see deposits next Friday if fees were paid upfront. If not dd will be 2/15 and 2/22 for people that updated today. Again it’s a theory.

    Good morning all!
Forgive me because I can’t remember where to look. I have all good codes on transcript. But my as of date is Feb 13 and my processing date is Feb 20.
Which one is most important? And is it a bad sign that they are different?

Good morning all, my stuff updated around 7:30 this morning (Eastern) time, im not a pather. I was accepted on the 31st, and this morning all my 2022 were filled in except the wage one, and on my transcript I had the 846 code and it said Refund Issued. Im new to the transcript game and from everything I read, i seem to think its a good code. Im just wondering when it will actually be issued, its done processing so dose that mean it goes out in the next batch of refunds they send out? Thanks again everyone, and I hope everyone starts getting good news.

Question: my processing date shows Feb 27, 2023…everything looks good. So, will we most likely see a DDD around then or could it be like 2/22 or 2/23. I didn’t know since it’s the processing date if I’d have to wait until then to get a DDD. I can’t remember how that part works. Any ideas would be appreciated!

@Sheila_33 Any idea why my 2022, AND 2021 and 2017 would have as of Feb 20, 2023 dates. All of 2022 have been filled in with both my figures and the computer figures since last friday (2/3) and all good codes showing my negarive account balance for my refund. WMR updated to path last weekend.

Anyone know why my 2022, AND 2021 and 2017 would have as of Feb 20, 2023 dates. All of 2022 have been filled in with both my figures and the computer figures since last friday (2/3) and all good codes showing my negarive account balance for my refund. WMR updated to path last weekend.

Hey hey! I have a question. What does this mean:

My transcript is showing a as of date/ processing date 2/13/23.

I filed on 1/16/23 was accepted 1/17. I currently have the PATH ACT message.

My cycle seems to be weekly (20230405).

Do this mean that my refund will be processed on 2/13/23?

    • I Got My Refund!

@Jenny04: You’re welcome. well, the fact that we went from nothing to something early this morning I’ll always take as a good thing (insert keith urban singing here). If it follows other, it should update even more by later today–which has been my past experience. If it waits a week and updates next week like NY said, it doesn’t really change much because the path freeze wasn’t going to let it do anything with a DDD until the 17th anyway.

    • I Got My Refund!

    @Kitty104: Per IRS site…

What happens if your refund is offset?
If your debt meets submission criteria for offset, BFS will reduce your refund as needed to pay off the debt you owe to the agency. Any portion of your remaining refund after offset is issued in a check or direct deposited as originally requested on the return. BFS will send you a notice if an offset occurs.
