For all the people impatiently waiting on tax refunds.

A grapevine for taxpayers, by taxpayers.

Ask all of your tax refund questions.

The most frequently asked question we have is when will the IRS WMR update and what day are tax refund deposits. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to receive your tax refund.

🔥 Updates: Advance Child Tax Credit Tools to Update and Unenroll

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2021?

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February 12, 2021.

When Can You File Taxes in 2021?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2021.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2021 Refund Cycle Chart
The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2021 tax season (2020 tax year) have been updated with 2021 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2021 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

@Bluerose1: That is not true for UE tax rebate. The IRS says your amended returns on UE rebate will be processed when it is your turn that line. This makes sense because the IRS apply the UE automatic exclusion in batches. So, whether you adjusted your returns for UE rebate or not, the IRS will apply the exclusion when it is your turn.

Welp. I’m still here waiting. Attempted to make an account with the IRS website to see if I can get an update with my transcripts. THey can’t verify me. So they’re going to send a letter in the mail with a code to verify me. The stupidity in this process is beyond me. They can send out codes, but can’t send out tax refunds.

And with everything going on in this year you would think they would just send us our shyte and if there are over payments, back payments, no payments then collect that shyte in next income tax season.

This is a complete cluster fyck of how incompetent our government and their agencies are.

Filed on March 1st. Accepted March 2nd. Received multiple letters saying we need more time to process. The time has gone and past and still no refund or CTC.

For here on out they will take as less taxes out my check and I will gladly get no refund or a small refund next tax season. I am done with the fyckery.

Anyone else’s CTC sent to a closed account seen an update yet? I had a strange issue even the IRS customer service couldn’t understand why or how. My IRS profile for CTC is correct for banking same bank that this years tax return went to PLUS my stimulus however for the CTC they sent it to a closed account that was used for my taxes 2 years ago and no one can figure out why at the IRS lol Anyone else seen this? The lady said go to my profile and update again even if it is correct. I hope its fixed by the next payment and I get this past one in the mail or direct deposit with august payment but not holding my breath at all.

IRS offset my ACA/Premium Tax Credit since I filed before the passing of the Recovery Act and they still have not refunded it. It took 18 weeks to process my electronically filed return.

Has anyone had the Premium Tax Credit refunded recently?

IRS did say they were doing this over the summer.

If AGI is lowered due to unemployment income treatment and falls below 150k and thereby eligible for 1400 stimulus check. Did any one get refund of both adjustment and stimulus?
Can we expect both when they process the adjustment?

@Rellyohboy: I don’t think you have to wait for months to get your UE amendment proceesed by the IRS since the tax break only affects only your AGI. According to the IRS, your 1040-X will be processed when it is your turn in line to get the UE automatic exclusion applicable to your returns. From the IRS website:

“Q3. I already filed an amended return (Form 1040-X) to claim the unemployment compensation exclusion, will this cause any issues or delay my refund? (added April 29, 2021)

    Answer:
“A3. No. The IRS can identify a duplicate claim or mixed adjustment scenarios. If the Form 1040-X has changes other than unemployment compensation exclusion, only the part of the claim that was not adjusted when we applied the exclusion will be considered after we apply the exclusion. Filing a Form 1040-X won’t increase the time it takes the IRS to make the automatic correction or reduce the time it takes to process your automatic correction.”

At least we are now able to file amended returns electronically as opposed to snail mail. It only took me about 20 minutes to run thru it and submit it in TaxAct. Only change was to my AGI and claiming the EITC due to the $10,200 exemption. I shoulda sent it earlier on but it slipped my mind.

    Just a heads up…

If you file an amended return it will kick your CTC eligibility from eligible back to pending status. I had a suspicion this would happen so I checked the portal and sure enough it did:

“Pending. You will not receive advance payments at this time.”

I already received the first CTC payment around the same time I filed an amended return which was just about 2 weeks ago. The 977 and 971 codes on my transcript reflect the receipt and forwarding of the amended return. The question is, will it remain in “pending” status until the amended return is fully processed or what?

Got ahold of irs in regards to federal return finally using this process…..(thank you to who posted it online):

How do you speak to a live person at the IRS?The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040.The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.Once you’ve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.Next, press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment”.Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything. After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. Finally, press 4 for all other inquiries. The system should then transfer you to an agent.

I’m still waiting for my tax refund. I filed electronically on April 8th and it’s a simple return, single with no dependents and no extra income. I have called the IRS numerous times and they are absolutely no help whatsoever. I’m sick of waiting for my money. I realize they are busy but everyone else I know got their refund within 10 days. The IRS should pay us interest compounded daily because that’s what they do when you owe them money.
