Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

When are Updates?

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Well I have no idea whats going on with TT. I still can not pay using my refund. It should be free bc of my income but since I am self employed they charge me. To top it off I do my brothers taxes as well and his TT says pending but for giggles I looked on WMR and it says it was accepted, I am thinking of going with a different tax company but it is so hard to break that TT cycle.

    Hey all!

Sooooo I was accepted yesterday and I had one bar. Now today, it’s saying I entered my info wrong, tho I know I’m not, but I also know that’s that thing they do when it’s ā€œtoo earlyā€ to find your info in the system. Like doing your taxes and then immediately going to check after you’re done.

Could this have done that because I’m a PATHER?

@ARGH: I hope you saw MSRazorbackPhD advice before filing. I’ve been here for many years and they have always had really good advice and or information. If you did file and it hasn’t been accepted, you can always try to refile. If the advance is of that much importance. I know filing taxes is stressful enough without having to REdo it. Heh.

    Reply
  21. TTOhio

@ARGH: yeah that sounds like bs to me. Like someone else already said, IRS does not hold pathers longer than is allowed by law. I think she just didn’t know the answer. I am on Path every year and have never had any problems with the advance. Always been a very simple return though. I’m sure that could matter. Sorry you’re having issues. Wish I could help.

Turbo tax will not let me efile without completing the form 8915-F (Disaster Distribution). I somehow selected that option by accident and cannot figure out how to unselected it in order to move forward. I’ve tried everything including contacting Turbo tax. Has anyone experienced this?

@Bennett72: No reason we can find for the star as of yet. I’m still trying to find a pattern to them because there’s nothing in the manual that refers to it. Did you file early and been accepted yet in the test batch? Some are seeing the stars change to n/a after the WMR has acknowledged the acceptance.

@Tab: No need to freak out, there is plenty of time. There’s no rhyme or reason on whose returns they test batch and no need to worry. We used to have a preparer do our taxes but it just got to the point that doing them ourselves was a way lot cheaper and the software is so self explanatory. Now, on the other hand, if I was a billionaire, I’d be getting one of my minions to deal with it, lol. Goals! :)

Yes, I know I’m freaking out, but we’ve never done our own taxes. 😁 Seemed silly to keep paying a ton when ours is pretty straightforward. We get EITC/ACTC

Just got accepted early this morning (1/19/22). I’ve never filed this early before! I’ve always been a weekly but last year I got my return VERY quickly so does that mean I got moved to a daily?
