For all the people impatiently waiting on tax refunds.

A grapevine for taxpayers, by taxpayers.

Ask all of your tax refund questions.

The most frequently asked question we have is when will the IRS WMR update and what day are tax refund deposits. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to receive your tax refund.

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2021?

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February 12, 2021.

When Can You File Taxes in 2021?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2021.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2021 Refund Cycle Chart
The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication and the IRS says the best way to check the status of your refund is using the Where’s My Refund tool. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2021 tax season (2020 tax year) have been updated with 2021 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.  This is an explanation and FAQ about when the IRS updates WMR and Transcripts.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2021 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

I got unemployment last year and had taxes taken out. My husband did not receive unemployment. We filed married jointly. I realize our situation means only the first $10,200 of my unemployment is exempt from taxes. I assumed this would put me in the first batch of rebates since I’d read they were doing those first, then people up to the $20,400 limit second. I was apparently wrong since I’ve received nothing yet. We have received all our stimulus and refund, so just waiting for this. Has anybody in a similar situation seen any movement that may indicate when their unemployment refund will be issued?

@CuckooinPgh: Losing bars with the “still being processed” message is reflecting the length of time since the return was received. As long as no bad tax topic codes show up, you’re just waiting in line to be processed.

    @Miwok: i
@Miwok: um 2019 employment has nothing to do with your 2020 tax return or tax credits. 2020 is for the year 2020…..you are confusing tax returns, tax credits, and stimulus payments. They are not based on the same factors.

    Reply
  27. Miwok

@Need help please: if you work in 2019 that’s income you want to use in 2020. You should be able to get EIC and plus payments… that’s my understanding, but I could be wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

I filed 2/17 and accepted the same day. Lost all bars and now I have a tt 151. I received a cp75 letter. Faxed documents over to them the following day. I claimed eitc with 3 dependents. I spoke with someone yesterday and they said my documents were received and to give the until Friday or the weekend when everything updates and I should hear something. My transcript says $0 for wages cause I didn’t work non of 2020. But I received unemployment. Can somebody please shed some light. I claimed hoh. What do I need to look for on transcript? Also is my wages done cause it’s says $0 for the year of 2020 I received all 3 stimulus and I did the look back

Got accepted 2/12, had to ID verify on 3/7. No movement except a letter saying my “return need further review”. Today I checked my account and had no wages filled in, but I did have a 1099 with $200 interest I’m owed by the IRS. Thoughts? Does this mean I’m possibly getting closer to my refund?

@Amy Spence: First I pray you get disability. Secondly, I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but thank God you know. My SIL has been battling w MS for years, and recently stopped her meds. If ok…I will send a prayer for you and your family.

@Dmw: I filed 3 weeks before that, was just diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and am waiting for disability. I haven’t received my refund or plus up yet either. My son is autistic, and I file HOH… At least you have 2 incomes….I now have none!!! It should 100% go in order of filing, finish 2019 then first in, first out. EVERYONE needs their money!!!!!
