key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Annaka: yes it will still go thru sbg
@sgorham29: Thanks for confirming, someone else said the same thing, will be reaching out to them soon.
Hello, I have a question. Does anyone know if their state came before their federal through sbtpg with fees taken out of state. Now federal has a date for tomorrow. Will it also go through sbtpg first, and have fees taken out again before it deposits into my account?
@IAMHeiress: some are extremely helpful but I had a very rude lady at first. I was advised it takes up to 3 weeks for them to call. If I haven’t heard from someone within that time to call back
@IAMHeiress: Contact your congressman and they will reach out to TAS that’s what I had to do last year and please note they do not want to hear from a congressman.
Has anyone else experience TAS intentionally trying to sabotage their case and being super mean and rude? I’ve been disconnected from the line multiple times a day and had agents hang up after placing me on hold. It’s happened way too often to be coincidence. Does anyone know how to escalate a case from TAS due to the neglect, mismanagement and sabotage of a case, by advocate and multiple agents, how would one get remedy during a hardship?
@texasmomof3: Ouu hallelujah thank you so much !!🧡
@Sheila_33: to add to the previous post I had to verify last week.
@Sheila_33: so because it says as of 4/14 does that mean I have to wait until Friday to see what date it is pushed to? Side note: this is for my 2021 return so I cannot rely on WMR, but only on my transcripts to update.
Filed a week ago, I’m a daily, updated sometime today with 846, DDD 04/18.
@Snoopy24: okay, your refund code is coming, should be this week.
@Snoopy24: oh ok! I was thinking I would update again guess not but congratulations
@Madinjay: it updated on the 11th!
@texasmomof3: thank you! And on my transcript at the top it shows my refund amount finally in place. It usually shows zero when it’s still processing.But no refund code yet 😭
@Snoopy24: when did it update?
@Snoopy24:
Congratulations, what do you mean when you said I finally have a balance?
So my as of date says 4/28 and I finally have a balance but no 846 code is this a good thing?
So begins another week of no answers!!
@Lalis: yes! I have the same bank
So I filed a mailed return, it was received 2/28 had to wait 4-6 weeks for an update, got still processing message and then I called this past Monday to check after I seen code 570 and 971 on my transcript. They changed my refund, and sent the letter out. However my transcript updated Friday with 846 DD date of 4/15… It’s been a long wait but I just want to let you guys know it’s coming. I saw in an earlier post that 971/570 with 0.00 beside it wasn’t bad, I guess that is so! Now I’m just hoping my deposit hit before it says so!
@GlendaJean: The as of date is when the system hopes to have an action done. If it can’t, the date will push out a week. Quite a few have had 0s and seen refunds. Others have seen id verifies. If that date sticks at 4/14, then someone has to get it manually moving again.
@Annaka: 846 notifies the treasury to release the refund. If you have an offset of any kind, that code may not show up until after the refund is released with the adjusted amount.
I have a DDD for 4-16 and have go2bank would be refund arrive early
Hello 👋 I have a couple of questions, if anyone could help me out. First, what time does WMR update tonight? Also, once you receive your 846 code on your transcripts is that the final stage? Do they ever update again after you get the code and date? Thanks.
@Lei: same….Its beyond frustrating
@Nat Bat: sorry to hear that. Fraudulent W2s under your name sounds like a nightmare. I hope they can help you get closer to your return on your May 1st appt.
I wasn’t going to look today, because I figured I would be disappointed. I was right, I am disappointed. No movement for me.
@orianasenoj: yes, that’s what I meant by the process date. Mine was the same, but the only thing changed was my as of to 04/28
@wjc1989: what’s your process date
I get my ddd by the end of the day today tt just emailed me stating this. My ddd is 4/16 I did 5 days early and I used PayPal which is early as well.
@Sheila_33: thank you so much. It pushed out to the 28th. There’s no updates besides the freeze. I’m weekly so prayerfully I see an update next Friday.
@Ree: as of date was 4/21/25 but moved to 4/28 last night and processing date? Not sure what that is I don’t have processing date on my transcript if you mean cycle code it’s 20251305 and my processing date next to my 570 is 4/14
@orianasenoj: what was your ass update and your processing date do you know?
@GlendaJean: oh and obviously I cannot check WMR for updates so transcripts are my only resource.
Hi everyone, I’m not sure if anyone can help me but so I’m taking a shot in the dark. I filed my 2024 return and received my refund fairly quick. I needed to file my 2021 return and did so by paper and mail. I noticed my account transcript updated on or around February 24th with 0’s. I successfully verified my tax return information yesterday. My question is, my account transcript still shows 0’s and my as of date right now is April 14th, what does this date mean? The lady I spoke to was amazing and advised me it could take 2-3 weeks to see any updates. And something about 9 weeks. I am expecting a paper check for my TY2021 refund because it exceeds three years. Any additional information is greatly appreciated, thank you!
@orianasenoj: you a welcome, I’m happy for you the nightmare is finally over
My tax return shows code 971 amended or claim filed and code 977 amended received what does this mean I never filed a amended return these code shows they were added in march I am just now seeing these updates today
@Ree: I actually ID verified on 03/19 never got a 971 and my cycle is 1305 so I’m weekly
@Ree: I’m a 1305 as well I had 570 it stayed for for two weeks and third week today it updated to 571 and 846 it’s coming
I filed Jan 21 accepted next day
Verified mar 10
570 code after verification
As of April 28 it pushes out every week cycle 20251305
Process date April 14
