key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

I am 0605 and got the 846 code for 2/24/2025 earlier this morning
I got 846 with 2/24/25 ddd I’m daily 03 but my wmr still showing my path message
Woke up to 846 code for 2/24 today. Oddly enough I usually only update Thursdays. Not complaining but best of luck to everyone.
@757VApather: My date changed to 2/24. Does the as-of-date mean anything?
I checked my transcripts from early around 10pm when everyone started getting updates all throughout the evening and to morning and to no avail I have no 846 codes on my account. The only thing that updated which really don’t mean much is the As Of and Processing Dates changed from 03/03/25 to 02/17/25 but absolutely no other changes.
I sit there with Codes 150, 768, and another 700 something for another credit but that’s it. Filed January 15th and accepted January 17th. Signed up to get the 5 day early payment but that seems highly unlikely and to be honest like a rip off because from what I’ve been reading people usually get the deposit before the actual date the IRS states as it is. I’m Cycle 20250504.
@757VApather: Are you weekly? If so…it’ll change Friday.
@Morris: I feel that to the core as I was accepted on January 17th but no movement. It sucks.
Did WMR went down this morning?
I congratulate the ones updated but it seems so unfair Filer A got accepted on Feb 8 and got the 846 code on Feb 18 but Filer B got accepted on Jan 24 and no 846 both have the same codes and weekly. I don’t understand the IRS process.
846 today dd 2/24
Transcripts updated sometime yesterday into this morning with DDD 2/24. Filed 1/24 & Accepted 127. Was on Path.

@Jay Jay not logged in: Thursday night
0605 has not updated yet. That means we’re weekly. Not sure when weekly updates tho. Anyone know?
Anyone with as of date and processing date 03/03 update yet? Transcripts are filled out minus 846. WMR changed to PATH Monday night. Cycle code 07/05. Is it possible le we get a refund before a WMR or transcript update?
Last yr my as of date was 3/10, processing date was 2/24 and DD came 2/22

I’m staying up 30min more to see if anything changes for 0705
@Morris: same here. Was hoping! Lol I got my DD last year on the 21st. Was hoping for close to the same this year.
Don’t know how to respond with list other people are responding with but my cycle code is 20250602 and I got my 846 code with ddd of 02/24. Filed with Freetaxusa.
