Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

@DobbyDo123: 971 usually indicates they need more time for one or more reasons. It’s a generic code. The letter will usually tell you what exactly they’re looking at. If it says 2/17 by the code in your transcripts you should receive the letter by then

    @Walter DOG:

I’m stuck on the first bar, message states: We have received your tax return and it is being reviewed.

When I look at my account transcript there are Five codes listed:

    150 Filed, cycle 05 (2/17)
    806 w2 or 1099 withholding (4/15)
    826 credit transferred out (2/17)
    826 credit transferred out (2/17)
    971 notice issued 2/17

@Amy Spence: I don’t have code 846 on my transcript the last code after the two 826 is notice 971 issued 2/17/25. I don’t see anything in my notices/letters on my account either.

@jnajera: getting that message before transcript has updated with codes is weird usually get 570 code for review so I would assume it’s related to income (w2 or 1099) most likely being this early and haven’t updated but not 100 percent sure my most logical guess

@GirlfromNY.: a lot has definitely changed, but unfortunately the law is still the same. According to the Path Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds until mid-February….and when they say ā€œissueā€, they mean process with the 846 release code. The law prohibits them from processing and releasing funds before the 15th, and the 846 means they’ve officially been released. I switched to a daily this year, so I’ll know for sure by Wednesday if we all get lucky and start seeing those 846 codes. As much as I’m hoping it’ll happen, I don’t think we’ll be that lucky lol šŸ˜„

@jnajera: probably got pulled for a manual review. Could be several reasons, most of the time they review it, correct or verify then put it back in to processing and it goes through just fine. Might add a few days, but when that happened to me a few years ago, I got a larger refund, so silver lining sometimes. Good luck!

@cheymander: just that you have to wait and it won’t really be useful until path lifts. My recommendation to people on pathetic is never look at WMR, just go straight to transcripts, that’s going to give you most accurate, up o date information.

@Jocelynn: I agree, I don’t think we will start seeing any updates until after the holiday. I searched posts from 2020 when the 15th fell on a Saturday, and most people had DDD’s for 2/24 and 2/26. So that means they waited until the 18-19th to start processing for Path. I think the 2/24 DDD’s were for dailies and the 2/26 for weeklies….which is probably what we’ll see this year. I switched to a daily this year, so I’ll know for sure by this Wednesday if I don’t see my 846 by then! 😊

@jnajera: some common things that may have them reviewing are verifying credits, dependents, or even a simple clerical error like w2 not matching. Those were the most common things when I worked the call center for the IRS

@Impatientlywaiting2025: mine switched to that message yesterday but I also got an email Friday from TT saying my refund was approved and on the way. Don’t know if it’s related. But I also have only one transcript and it’s blank and WMR never updated this year at all. Been sitting at one bar since 1/24. I’ve never updated to path message on WMR like others seem to and I’ve been path for 3 years now. It’s been a wonky year, again. IRS is all over the place and beyond inconsistent
