Welp,
Bars are gone and I’m on Tax Code 570. Guess I’m fucked once again this year.
If this happens to you, call and get a Tax Advocate. It’s what I had to do last year and even then it took til the first week of April to get my refund. If you don’t get an Advocate, you’ll be waiting 10 times longer.
Fuck the IRS and their bullshit.
Filed and accepted via TT on 1/28
WMR shows 1 bar and TT152.
As of today, still no transcripts, still no movement.
I only have EITC.
I also got mixed up in the fuckery of last year and didn’t end up with my refund until APRIL and that’s only because I was able to get an Advocate. I hope to God that isn’t the case this year.

@xxtina – you don’t have to have a hardship to get a TA but it does make them go faster if you do. It doesn’t take much. You being on a fixed income may work. Regardless, they will represent you and get it taken care of.
@Rachel – Hardship makes the TA work faster and give them ammo to make the IRS do what they ask, but if it’s been past the 21 days the Advocate can still work for you.
@Rachel – I did the same thing and that’s why my refund was in review. I found that out from my Tax Advocate who said that the difference in amounts falls within threshold and so today he sent over a request for my hold to be released.
GET A TAX ADVOCATE. Don’t call the toll free line or you will be on hold forever and they won’t really help you, call your local tax advocate office. My advocate told me that if I hadn’t have asked for an advocate, I’d be waiting MONTHS. He also said if I wanted to amend later once I get my DD I can, but it’s not like I’d be getting much more.
But yes, get an advocate or you won’t see that refund any time soon.
@Mike – My advocate sent over the request to release the hold this morning. He is anticipating the IRS doing that by sometime next week as so far that’s what’s been happening this year (taking a few days to lift after the request is sent). Once the hold is lifted it takes a cycle to DD.
Also, not all EITC and CTC returns are getting flagged for review. A huge lot of them are, yeah, But not all. That’s how some are getting through. Those that have been flagged are being dealt with last.
Have you gotten an advocate? I asked for mine and got assigned a case number due to hardship on Friday, March 2nd. Talked to my newly assigned TA on Wednesday, March 7th. TA requested hold lifted today, March 9th. If you want to wait, that’s on you. But because I got an advocate, I found out EXACTLY what the problem was, got it resolved, and now have light at the end of the tunnel. If you keep on waiting, who knows when yours will get resolved, but good luck.
I’ll keep everyone posted as to when I finally get my DD.
My advocate has been AWESOME. He has updated me every step of the way, explained everything, and even went ahead and worked on my case and sent the request for it to be released today, even though he was on Duty Worker assignment today and didn’t have to work on cases.
He also had some GREAT information that I thought I would pass along.
1. Call your LOCAL Tax Advocate, not the 800 number. The 800 number is a call center and you’re much more likely to get through and get help on the local line.2. It’s true that if you’ve been assigned a case number with a tax advocate, the IRS will no longer touch your return. In fact. they aren’t allowed to at that point. Only the advocate and open it and read it from that point on so calling the IRS directly will not help you.
3. The reason that we all keep getting 18 different stories as to what the issue is when we call is because they aren’t supposed to tell you anything. Basically, all these flagged for review are getting shoved to the bottom of the pile while they sort out the rest of the returns, THEN they will figure ours out. The reason for this is because some of them are going to be because of having to verify identities (to make sure it’s not ID theft) so they don’t want to give info out to people that might not be the actual taxpayer.
4. Once you have an advocate assigned to your case, the WMR won’t be updated for you again. So it’s useless, don’t bother checking it anymore. Same with your transcript. He said that once the IRS agrees to lift the hold they will inform him and let him know the DD date, and then he will call me and let me know.
5. If you’ve been calling and the IRS is giving you the run around, GET AN ADVOCATE. He said if you wait, you’ll be waiting for months.
6. If you’re using hardship as your reason, always have proof of SOMETHING showing why. The reason for this is if the IRS tries to come back asking why you need it so bad (so they can continue to delay), the advocate can shove your paperwork back in their faces to make them expedite. Also, if your advocate requests things from you, get it to them right away!! If it doesn’t seem like you’re making an effort, they won’t make the extra effort since others will clearly need it faster than you.
7. Your advocate HAS to give you a “realistic” expectation for resolution which is normally like 6 weeks, BUT he said in his experience this year, most of his clients so far have gotten their money within 2 weeks. Basically it has taken the IRS a couple of days to release the hold, then it’s just going through the one cycle after the hold lifts. He said that while that’s been his experience so far, I just can’t hold him to it.
Seriously, this guy has gone above and beyond. I don’t know what I would have done without him.
So, here’s hoping for a quick resolution on this for me (hopefully next week). FINGERS AND TOES CROSSED!!

Welp, talked to my tax advocate and found out what the issue is. Turns out either I, or Turbo Tax, miscalculated and over-reported that I made…
wait for it…
$73 more on my income than I did. I didn’t under report, I OVER reported…so because of that I am actually getting less than I am supposed to by a few bucks. You would think that would have thrilled them. But nooooooo. Instead they decide to hold me up til god knows when.
Uuuugghgghhhhhh
He also said that he was glad I asked for an advocate because if I hadn’t, it could have been months before I got a resolution on my own.
So, I have to fax him my W2’s so he has them handy, and he’s going to request that the IRS just let it go and release my refund since it should fall within threshold of allowable difference. If for some reason they say no, then I’ll have to amend, but he will help me with that, get it filed, and have it expedited.
He was actually a super nice guy, and really very helpful.
So, best case they say ok to take the hold off and I hopefully get my refund next week. (fingers fucking CROSSED)
Worst case I have to amend and I’ll have it by the end if April at the latest (which still screws me).
At least I FINALLY have some answers. UGH

I literally will not believe a single damn thing the IRS agents tell me. I’ve already talked to at least 6 of them and it’s always a different story. I’m waiting on an advocate to call me so I can get a real story.
All of you that show the 846 on your transcript, at least that’s real and tangible.
For the rest of you that have just been told that the hold is off? I honestly wouldn’t hold your breathe and I’d believe it when the money is in the bank.
Sorry to be so negative but my experience has kind of informed it.
Got my transcript. Nothing has changed. Still 570 of 3/5. Though I did ask for an advocate and was assigned a case number on 3/2 so that may have prevented things. I’m still waiting for the Advocate to call me back, but they have until end of business tomorrow so here’s hoping!
uuuggghhhhhh now I’m locked out for 24 hours because of failed login in attempts. Anyone else have any luck?
Finally got a code and it’s telling me there is a technical error and try again later. God I hope this means things are moving.
I’m trying to look at my transcript but it’s not sending me the verification code via text. It keeps saying it is but then my phone gets nothing.
Is this what you mean about not being able to log in?
ok, there was no update for me as of yet, so I called and filed a case with the Tax Advocate using hardship. They are supposed to call me no later than 3/7. I’m hoping that in the meantime, I get updated and this resolves itself.
*fingers crossed*

welp, got the unhelpful 4464C letter today telling me it’s under review and do nothing. Funny thing, it never coded on my transcript that they were sending me a letter. At this point, I think everyone is getting one since aside from my name and address on the cover page, it was titled – “TAXPAYER”
All I know is that my cycle date was 20180605 which means I cycle out weekly today and it *should* update tomorrow since my 570 code is dated 3/5.
Let’s hope. I’m crossing everything at this point…

Yep, I have a 570 with a 3/5 date. Does anyone know FOR SURE that the date is when it will fall off if no 971 code gets added? I need to know for sure because I have a pending car repair I have to pay for.
Just got off the phone with the local tax advocate (used the local number, NOT the 877 number) and THEY say that the date of the 45 day review IS 1/19 and if I don’t hear anything by 3/5 to call them back and they will open up a case and get an advocate assigned to me to deal with this because at that point the IRS has broken it’s agreement with me.
uuuggggghhhhh this is so frustrating. I hate this so much. Why can’t anyone just give me a straight damn answer??
Just got off the phone with the IRS again. Now they say the clock didn’t start on my 45 days until TODAY, and could give me no reason why I was told last week that it was started on 1/19, so now I’m told I have to wait until April 12th before I can call again.
I literally have no idea what I’m going to do. This screws me so hard. I’m also still told it’s a “randomly pulled” review and that there is no indicated reason for it, just luck of the draw.
I hate the IRS so much.
@Rachel – yup. Only problem I ever had was a few years ago when someone tried to file a return using my SSN, but luckily it was after I had filed that year and received my return. I haven’t a problem since, until now. And of course this couldn’t happen at a worse possible time.
I have noticed on this thread that people with the EITC have been told that their 45 days didn’t start until 2/15, but I was told mine started on the day my return was accepted on 1/19. I’m currently on hold with the IRS again because I want to see if I can get any additional information from someone different.
Well, I found out I was under the 45 day review. Supposedly it started when my return was accepted on 1/19 and I’m supposed to call back on March 5th if I don’t hear anything. They never sent me a letter or anything, I only found out because I called wondering why WMR never updates.
I also just called the Tax Advocate as suggested below and they were of absolutely no help. They said they couldn’t look up information or give me any sort of status whatsoever, so I just needed to wait.
This is so frustrating because I was counting on this money as my car died last week and I need my refund to repair it so I can work.
uuuggggghhhhhhh
