Never once had a problem with Turbo Tax… pretty sure it asks you about insurance, if you click on the appropriate answer it walks you thru it.

They couldn’t have billed you for a tax return you didn’t do thru them… there’s no way. Sorry, I call bs on that one.

And stimulus money went to whatever bank account you used to get your 2019 return. You also had the option to change that… if the account was bad, you got a paper check. Your fault, not theirs.

I’ve been using Turbo Tax for 10 years. Only time I’ve ever had anything go wrong was during the stimulus checks government hand out. The IRS sent my stimulus money to the Turbo Tax bank account instead of my personal account. It took about an extra month to get the stimulus check. Other than that they’ve been great. 40 bucks a year to file taxes with professional software you can’t beat that. Better than giving H&R $300 for using same step by step software. JMO

I also show on wmr on offset but offset line says no offset. I looked up reasons and it says if you have fees taken out from your refund that it can say that but I’ve always had my fees taken out and this is the first time it’s said that so I hope it’s a mistake. Looks like a lot of us are getting this message with no offset so that’s a good sign. Good luck everyone

Filed 2/7, accepted 2/8. Bottom two transcripts for 2022 both show tracking # but no filing numbers & bottoms say “No tax return”. I’m thinking this is something new as there are so many people all over fb & message boards getting this on their transcripts, doesn’t matter if pather (not me) or regular simple return (me). Plus now, tomorrow will be a nothing-burger because of the holiday :/ so we’ll see what this week brings.

I assume most of us had an advance or fees taken from our taxes. I can confirm that Chime does not process deposits on weekends or holidays. I’m 2/23 DDD with H&R block so hoping I’ll have my deposit first thing Tuesday morning. But who knows 🙄

I think “being processed” as apposed to “still being processed” is a good sign. It’s only been 11 days so hopefully they’re not gonna take much longer. Or go past the 21 days.

Has anyone experienced where their account transcript and wage and income transcript suddenly popped up and was accessible, but when you clicked on it, it said “no return filed” with all zeroes? Or do you know anyone who has? If so, do you remember how long it took to get any codes after that, including your 846 or DDD code? Few days, a week, weeks, etc? I heard this blank transcript occurrence means you’ve been resequenced.

PS. I tried to ask this same question elsewhere and everyone who answered talked about NA transcripts. I’m talking about account transcripts for this year that popped up sometime after you filed, but show “no return filed,” they are NOT N/A. The link you click on is the applicable tax year like you would to access your transcripts online if they did have something on them. Usually when account transcripts pop up after you file and before you get your 846/ddd show when your return was accepted and your cycle code. And however many days later you get your 846/ddd. In this case, it’s like the initial account transcript appearance EXCEPT it doesn’t show anything under transactions. It literally is an account transcript that says “no return filed.” I hope this was clear enough…

How does the Refund Transfer work?
Usually 1 to 2 days before a refund is scheduled to arrive, the IRS sends a pre-notification of the refund amount to TPG. The IRS does not deposit the money at this time, but it is only a notification that the refund is on its way. We set up the disbursement upon receiving that pre-notification so that the money reaches the taxpayer on the same day it would have if the money was deposited directly from the the IRS into the taxpayer’s bank account.

I’m expecting tomorrow evening (when I always get it). Also, for me, after 12 it updates to funded then a few hours later is sent to me.

I’m actually calling them to try and get a partial refund they build me for two years ago even though I didn’t file my taxes with them. I couldn’t file because they couldn’t help me figure out where to put in a simple insurance form .and this year I needed help with that again and I couldn’t get any help. I had to go on to YouTube for instructions how to insert a 1095 and because of this it was rejected the first time. They hung up on me three days in a row!!

-New cycle codes are generated each year, based on several different factors.

-Cycle codes are related to the day transactions post to the IMF.

-Posting to the IMF does NOT mean updating on the Transcript or WMR.

-Whether you were daily or weekly last year will not, with certainty, mean you are daily or weekly this year. However, it can be a clue.

-Cycle codes ending in 01, 02, 03, 04 are absolutely daily accounts.

-Transactions on accounts ending in 01, 02, 03, 04 can post to the IMF on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

-Cycle code ending in 05 can be either daily OR weekly.

-Transactions on weekly accounts ending in 05 can post to the IMF ONLY on Thursday.

-Transactions on daily accounts ending in 05 can post to the IMF on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

-On a transcript, some transactions you can see, some you can’t. The IRS doesn’t show their whole hand.

-When transactions occur and post to your account on the IMF, MOST times you can see the transaction on your transcript the following day (transaction codes, like 570, 846, etc) and the WMR may update the next day (status updates, reference codes, deposit dates.)

-If your cycle code ends in 05, there is just about no way to know with certainty that you are either daily or weekly, unless you filed with an IP Pin (weeklies for sure) or someone from the IRS tells you. Good luck with that, you’d probably be told the wrong thing anyway by a rep. Hell, you might even get the wrong info from a Tax Advocate.

-If your cycle code ends in 05 you can only use clues to guess if you are daily or weekly.

-Dailies with an 05 and weeklies with an 05 just so happen to be posting together. They “share the day”, if you will.

-An easy way to remember the cycle of how things post and update is this:

Transaction Posts to the IMF on a day, the following day depending on the type of transaction…transcript might update, the following day…depending on the type of transaction that occurred, the WMR might update.

-If you updated on Saturday the 16th, it is likely you are a daily who shares the day with weeklies who didn’t update. This is disputed by many, but is the only thing that makes sense.

Most states allow you to file your State Return separately from your Federal Return so long as your Federal Return has already been accepted by the IRS, although there are a few states that have more specific requirements.

There are three ways that state returns can be submitted.

Stand Alone states allow taxpayers to electronically file there State Return with or without their Federal Return.

Piggyback states MUST electronically file their State Return WITH their Federal Return. If the Federal Return gets rejected then the State Return will also be rejected. Typically any corrections made to the Federal Return should also be corrected on the State Return and then they can be resubmitted together. If the Federal Return is accepted, but the State Return is rejected then corrections will need to be made to the State Return and then resubmitted by itself. If you electronically filed your Federal Return without submitting your State Return then you will need to paper file the State Return.
State Only states can be submitted without the Federal Return so long as the online tax prep has a record of your Federal Return already being submitted and accepted.

Once your returns have been accepted they will begin to process independently from each other. Check your state’s revenue service or government website for more specific information on when they will begin accepting returns and when to expect your refund.

                                                                      West Virginia

It doesn’t really. However, people use it to check what day they should expect updates on Transcripts or WMR.

Tax returns should always be filed using the necessary documentation (W-2, 1099, etc). If your employer does not provide you with a W-2 then you may request a substitute W-2 with form 4852.

No. In some cases the tracker graphic will not be shown if your return is being reviewed prior to step two. Instead it may show an explanation of the status or instructions depending on the situation. This can happen even if you previously checked Where’s My Refund and it showed the status as “Return Received” along with the tracker. In these cases be assured that they have your tax return and it is processing it. Please follow the directions provided by Where’s My Refund? Otherwise, if the IRS needs more information they will contact you by mail. If they send you a letter about your return, please follow the instructions in the letter as soon as possible.

This does not mean an audit.  Reviewed can also mean processing.

Yes, we have had reports from a few people that they received their refund and the WMR never updated from the ‘being processed” message. Though it has happened, it doesn’t seem to be the trend; most people get a hard direct deposit date as an indicator that they are finally through this nonsense.

The “return” transcript is usually an almost exact copy of your filed tax return, whereas the “account” transcript will have transaction codes that indicate activity on your account. The codes on an account transcript is how to get more information about your tax refund. Ordering transcripts by mail is not a reliable way to find out if you are done processing or to see if a DDD is in your near future.

Every last test batch return has to be done processing before opening day and issued ddd’s to clear the system for incoming returns. If your bar has disappeared you are completely processed so no worries. If your bar and return amount has disappeared either your being reviewed, have an offset or owe an debt.

It is NOT a calendar date, but it translates to a calendar date in which your return posted to the master file. It is found on the Account Transcript and looks like this example: 20240605

It is an 8 digit sequence of numbers such as 20190405.

It is an independent organization within the IRS. They help taxpayers who are experiencing economic harm, such as not being able to provide necessities like housing, transportation, or food; taxpayers who are seeking help in resolving problems with the IRS; and those who believe an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should. Here are ten things every taxpayer should know about TAS:

The service is free and tailored to meet your needs. You may be eligible for our help if you have tried to resolve your tax problem through normal IRS channels and have gotten nowhere, or you believe an IRS procedure just isn’t working as it should. They help taxpayers whose problems are causing financial difficulty or significant cost, including the cost of professional representation. This includes businesses as well as individuals. If you qualify for help, they will help you get your problem resolved. You will be assigned to one advocate who will be with you at every turn.

A tax return transcript shows most line items from your tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after the return was filed. In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and for applying for student loans.

A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. This transcript shows basic data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.

Read more about in our article about how transcripts can help you learn more about your tax refund.

These terms are thrown around when discussing the dates provided by the WMR. DDD was coined as “direct deposit date” because the language from WMR says something about “your refund will be deposited on XX” . You likely can count on it being close to the day you will get your refund. A DD (direct deposit) date however is used to describe the actual day you received your direct deposit.

An e-file PIN is a self-selected PIN used to submit your return to the IRS. If you don’t have an e-file PIN, you can use the prior years Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) to submit your return.

IP PINs are used when ID theft has been reported to the IRS.  IP PINs are mailed to you from the IRS and are required to be entered on your tax return. Read more about IP Pins, how to get an IP pin, and when you need one.

See what happened in prior years for people who got Code 9001:

Thanks to our friends at The College Investor, here is some more information about Reference Code 9001.

“….IRS Code 9001: “Taxpayer accessed Refund Status using a secondary TIN. Refund Status could not be returned. Get a Primary TIN Analyze account and follow appropriate IRM.”

The IRS has an entire manual dedicated to errors and problems that they encounter during the course of doing business. Some of these codes are directly related to your tax return, and some are related to something else. For the most part, codes less than 2000 are related directly to your return. Anything higher (like code 9001), it’s related to something totally different – so right there, stop freaking out…..”

Questions about other codes you see on Where’s My Refund? Look at our guide on reference codes.

Tax Topic 152 from the IRS is a code you might see when you check the status of your refund with the Where’s My Refund (WMR) tool at the irs.gov website. It is not an audit…chill.  It is not an indicator of whether your tax return is done being processed or that there is a problem. Tax Topic 152 is a default processing message that appears while your return is processed. No worries. Some people believe you get Tax Topic 152 just before you get approved for a direct deposit date (DDD), and some people receive this as soon as they get their status update on the WMR (Where’s My Refund) which shows their return was received. Whichever way you get it, here is what the IRS.GOV says about Tax Topic 152:

Tax Topics – Tax Topic 152 Refund Information

Tax Topic 152 – Refund Information
There are three options for receiving your federal individual income tax refund:

                                                                      • The fastest way is by direct deposit (electronic funds transfer) into your checking or savings account, including an individual retirement arrangement (IRA);
                                                                      • By purchase of U.S. Series I Savings Bonds; or
                                                                      • By paper check sent to the address listed on your return.

The “as of date” is a date that the IRS designates as a day which something needs to be done by on the return or it pushes out a week.

Your tax return has been received and is being processed.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) reduces your tax liability whereas the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) is a fully refundable credit.

The IRS tells you exactly what you need to know about the child tax credits.

The difference between IRS daily and weekly accounts is when information posts to the master file.  According to the IRS Manual, daily accounts post within 4 days and weekly account post within 7 days.

Most taxpayers will fall into the daily “accelerated” processing. If you are in a weekly account, your refund will “post” within a week of being accepted and your DDD will be scheduled for the following Thursday. Account conditions that prevent accounts from being marked daily are conditions such as (the list is not all inclusive):

                                                                      1. ITIN Accounts
                                                                      2. Foreign Addresses
                                                                      3. Campus Addresses
                                                                      4. Identity Theft Indicators
                                                                      5. Prisoner File
                                                                      6. Related MFT 31 Account (e.g., Bankruptcy, Offer-In-Compromise, Installment Agreements, Innocent Spouse)
                                                                      7. Criminal Investigation Activity
                                                                      8. Civil Penalty Account (MFT 55)
                                                                      9. Tax Module History (two years prior) with CI, Exam or Collection Activity

The IRS ACCEPTED status on Where’s My Refund (WMR) means your return has been received and that it seems to have passed a basic check for completeness.  During the basic check, the IRS also looks for red flags such as fraud indicators.  “Accepted” is usually the first status most taxpayers will see when they check the WMR, unless the tax return has been rejected. The initial basic review when you file your tax return includes checks by the IRS for things like whether your social security number has already been used and if forms or fields are not completed or are missing. There are also other basic checks that the IRS uses.

The APPROVED status on Where My Refund indicates your return has been processed and a refund is approved. “Approved” is the status taxpayers will see when they check the WMR if they are due a refund. The status when your refund is approved will display a date that you can expect to receive a refund.

You may see these terms used on the IRS Where’s My Refund website or the IRS2Go App. Also, tax filing companies such as H&R Block and TurboTax use similar terms to describe your return status on their websites, emails and text message updates.”

The GMP is the IRS Get My Payment tool to check the status of your stimulus payment.

The cycle in which the Martinsburg Computing Center (MCC) posts returns processed by campus and selects returns. The cycle is expressed by a six-digit cycle code. Cycle codes can be found on your Account Transcript. The first four digits represent the filing year, the second two digits represent the week of that filing year (e.g., Cycle 202404 is the fourth week of the 2024 filing year).

The Protecting American From Tax Hikes (PATH) Act is a law that was enacted in 2015. Part of the PATH Act affects those filing with Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) as those refunds cannot be issued prior to February 15th. Use our Path Act guide to see if your tax refund is subject to the Path Act

There are many reasons your tax return could be taking longer to process than you expected. Some of the common errors are simple mistakes. For example, your tax return could be slow to process because of a simple math error, incorrect social security number for any of the taxpayers or dependents listed on your return, incorrect address, incorrect bank information (e.g., routing numbers, account numbers), if you use direct deposit.

Many phone numbers and refund site links are listed on our How To Talk to a Human page. Some are mass updates for Transcripts and others are mass updates for WMR. For weekly accounts, there are 2 days per week that you can expect mass updates.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) receives information about your income.  It can be found on ssa.gov If income is displayed on ssa.gov, the only thing it means is that SSA has received information about your income. Not all income is reported to the SSA. Here is how it updates and where the information comes from:

–Wages reported on W-2’s are sent directly to the SSA from employers. Then from there, the SSA sends it to the IRS weekly on Fridays. If your income from wages is displayed on ssa.gov, the only thing it means is that SSA has received the information from an employer if you had a W2.

The amount shown on ssa.gov may match your taxable income, i.e. Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on your return, but it might not match in cases where you had additional types of income or more than one W-2.

–In the case you had multiple W2s, it might not all be there until all employers have submitted the information to SSA.

–Or in the case you had additional taxable income, such as that on a 1099, the SSA receives that information differently than wages.

With 1099’s, those are sent directly from the Payer to the IRS, not to SSA. In the case that you are self-employed and/or you only have 1099s and if taxable income shows on ssa.gov, that means you are somewhere processing. It does not mean that your tax return is fine or complete.

Taxable income from self-employment typically doesn’t show on ssa.gov until mid-year.

Although some returns may be accepted into the test batch prior to the opening day of tax season, the “21 days” the IRS says to allow for processing doesn’t officially begin until the opening day. If you filed on or after opening day then your “21 days” begins on the day your return was accepted.

                                                                      Tax Year 2019

The child tax credit expires when the child is over 16 year old.

The IRS usually startys accepting small batches of returns to test their system 2 weeks before they officially open for the season.

The IRS usually begins mailing IP PINs in late December – early January.

IRS call centers usually begin accepting call on President’s Day weekend.

The C-Freeze placed on PATH accounts begins to be systematically released on 2/15 and updates will be seen on transcripts and WMR after 2/15.

Usually, the IRS officially opens on the first business day around the third week of the year. We have seen them open even later.

Any money owed for an offset is automatically deducted from your refund amount at the time your refund is approved.

April 15th unless it falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday. In thoses cased, it would be the first business day following the 15th.

Anyday, anytime.  But, there are 4 days when there are “mass” updates. Generally, updates begin around 3:00 am local time. Some updates occur on Saturday nights.

The Where’s My Refund (WMR) tool updates throughout the day for acceptances and overnight (midnight-3am) for account updates and Direct Deposit dates.

An unpostable happens when something is unable to be posted to the master file. Read our full guide about unpostable transactions.

The Where’s My Refund (WMR) tool has been updating quickly. Most people see an accepted return in a few hours and sometimes even in a few minutes.

                                                                      After February 15th.

Where’s My Refund is usually available at all hours on all days with exception to planned maintenance.

Only amend your tax return AFTER you have received your refund or when indicated by a tax advocate or letter from the IRS.

After 270 days of default status, an offset for student loans will be processed.

Your cycle code can be found on your “Account Transcript”.

Use our updated list of No Hold Banks (NHB)

TFI and NHB acronyms we use to help people understand why some people see deposits earlier than the date indicated on Where’s My Refund (WMR) tool.

                                                                      TFI: Traditional Financial Institution
                                                                      NHB: No Hold Bank

If you are using a TFI for direct deposit and given a direct deposit day on WMR, you will likely have your deposit available on that day.

If you are using a NHB, soon after your transcript updates with the 846 code, you can see your deposited posted the same day in many cases, sometimes available in the afternoon.

Examples of a NHB would be people using Netspend, Bluebird, AMEX serve cards for their DD. Another variation of a NHB are some credit unions. In many cases, credit unions will show you a pending direct deposit fairly quickly after the 846 on your transcript, but still make the direct deposit available on the date shown on the WMR.

Examples of NHB’s are Netspend, Walmart Money Card, some credit unions.

Santa Barbara Bank and Trust (SBBT) is the former name for one of the banks used by Turbo Tax for refund processing if you choose to have TurboTax deduct their fees from your refund. (Meaning you didn’t pay the fee with credit/debit card before filing). Santa Barbara TPG is their new name. Your refund status can be checked at their site if your refund is being transferred from them on the TPG check tax refund status site.

Account conditions that prevent accounts from being marked daily are conditions such as (the list is not all inclusive):

                                                                      1. ITIN Accounts
                                                                      2. Foreign Addresses
                                                                      3. Campus Addresses
                                                                      4. Identity Theft Indicators
                                                                      5. Prisoner File
                                                                      6. Related MFT 31 Account (e.g., Bankruptcy, Offer-In-Compromise, Installment Agreements, Innocent Spouse)
                                                                      7. Criminal Investigation Activity
                                                                      8. Civil Penalty Account (MFT 55)
                                                                      9. Tax Module History (two years prior) with CI, Exam or Collection Activity

Once your account is marked weekly, it can remain that way for several years or change at any given year. There is not a set time period that your account is weekly.

You really don’t. But, you can use the last 2 digits of your cycle code to see if your account is Weekly or Daily.

The IRS Treasury Offset Program (TOPS) includes amounts for Child Support, Student Loans, Delinquent State taxes, other Non-tax Debt.

If an individual owes money to the federal government or some other agencies because of a delinquent debt, the Treasury Department can offset that individual’s federal payment or withhold the entire amount to satisfy the debt. The debtor is notified in advance of any offset action to be taken. Individuals may call (800) 304-3107 with questions about delinquent debt.

Calling the IRS will not speed up your refund because the representatives on the phone for the IRS are not the people who process the returns. But you may be able to get more information if your refund is delayed since the WMR seems to be hit or miss or might be producing a code or message indicating that you should call.

At some point last year, I changed from a weekly to a daily. This change has continued into this year, for which I am grateful. My transcripts updated yesterday (Saturday), and my WMR updated this morning. I hope this helps any of you dealing with these issues.

I’ve always been funded 3-5 earlier since I’ve used SBTPG. Last year my refund was to hit on 3/17 and it hit on 3/8. Everybody is different, don’t talk like what you said is facts bcuz it’s not. Since they are taking fees it doesn’t work exactly the same as receiving a deposit early. The whole point of pre-notification is purely to notify the bank money is coming so they can have it on hand and available. It’s not to get you the funds early.
