Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Chroniclurker29: I am as well we may be weekly

    I was accepted 1/21/2024
    Transcripts are blank
(Although this Friday that just psssd my ACCOUNT LINK WAS MADE AVAILABLE…it’s still blank but I was able to access 2024 account transcript)
2024 wages and earnings say no return filed
And it still has the 2024 non- Filing letter link

WMR say ā€œit is being processed ā€œ with tax topic 152 and refund amount present

I think that this is good news though we don’t have the dreaded ā€œstill being processed ā€œ phrase

    We just may update Friday

@Ineedmy$$now: oh wow I just saw you had to resubmit yours. You had 2 have received your advance by now! If your resubmitted that before 8pm, Id be surprised if u haven’t. I guess if we don’t hear back from ya then that means good news lol ;)

@Texas: oh snap! So sorry to hear! Did you use your same CK account that u already had? I saw SO many complaints last year of ppl getting denied using their pre existing CK money account but that so many were approved when opening it 4 the 1st time. I know what that’s like. I use to always get it from JH but hated paying $600 which is ludicrous. So last year I said neber again & I was denied 4 the 1st time but still had to pay that amount. I said heck no! Promised myself I’d stick it out & go thru TT. Honestly TT still prob the best bet 4 u. Unless I get it free elsewhere

@Ineedmy$$now: it only took like an hour and 10 minutes before I got my advance after I had to resubmit my federal. Resubmitted around 430est, got email from CK @ 5:36pm, then few min later TT email saying it’s been accepted. I hope you get yours soon. I know you said you double checked yours. If there was anything wrong where it can’t be accepted then TT usually is pretty quick about letting u know within hours. However I did have that happen once B4 long time ago & it took days 4 then 2 let me know I was rejected & had 2 resubmit again

@Kev85: @Ineedmy$$now: sorry just now saw you asked the question about how long it took after I fixed the issue with my federal. I resubmitted it around 4:30pm est. Then got an email @ 5:36pm from CK saying I got my advance then at 5:42pm I got the email from TT saying my return has been accepted. So it took just over an hour . I’ve been told B4 that many get their TT email update after they get their CK email & funds. So just a slight lag

@Eriona: I took have never used TT advance. I haven’t filed with them in like 4-5 years either. I filed today & got the advance. I’ve seen ppl say that cl acts gets shut down too
So far I’m good, it’s still open. But if I were u if/when u get it, take the money out or transfer it right away! It gave me the option to transfer like 4 hours after I received my advance but I had already used the money for a bill by then lol
