key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@LostNthesauce: you shall update next week, my husband’s account was the same way and out of nowhere, he was sent a check without anything on his transcripts.
1305 CC. No update today on my transcripts. It dont even show a notice was issued that I received last week when I updated with a 570 code.
@Sdiego: mine too. I went from 2/12 to 4/22 . I wonder what it really means lol
@TisTheSeasonOfTorture: Yes I do have a 570 code, The person i spoke to this am told me its noting i can do. But if i can send my W2 in maybe that will help.
@BeeBee40:
I hope it helps, I called to find out what’s going on with my return yesterday April 4th as for I also have a 570 code as of date 4/1/24 00.00.
971 as of date 4/8/24 00.0
spoke to the IRS representative and she explained there is nothing wrong, this year some returns were selected for verification, wages EIC, Etc and ID verification. My daughter who I claim received the letter, and she verified successfully March 20th.
she then told me that my hold phase started after the verification date that took place on March 20th and it may take up to 120 days. I will now wait; forcedly I have to wait.
Filed 2/8
Processing date shows 3/18
570 3/18/24
971 3/25/24 received CP05 online
Finally got some movement today, 846 for 4/10/24. My income was not showing on SSA for whatever reason and it finally updated this past Saturday which it seems allowed me to finish processing. I didn’t submit anything, I just waited and the issue was resolved.
@WaitingStill: yes. In Jax Fl. Their bay st office is not good. Majority of reps they do employ are at home. I left there two years ago but still have a friend who works at the main office for HR. It’s still just passing people along to pacify. I hated getting calls from people trying to go in. I tried the best I could to help people over the phone bc I knew what it was like
@Shelleybeansss: Jacksonville in FL by chance? I’m in Jacksonville, FL & have been trying to gauge whether or not most of the holds are happening in certain areas more than others.
Filed 1/24, Accepted 1/25. As of date was at 02/12 until I amended. Processing date has been at 2/26 for ever. Received my 570 as of 2/12 and my 971 as of 3/4. Able to read 60 day wait letter online. My PATH message was stuck on WMR well past the 16th of Feb? Amended to add a missing W2 for less than $500 that didn’t change anything, just to see if I’d get any kind of movement on 3/24. That Friday (05er), is when my as of date changed to 4/15 and I received a 971 and 977 regarding my amendment. Nothing since.
@nova219: do you have code 570 on your transcript?
In my case the 4464C is because the IRS hasn’t received my W-2. I had to submit documentation to verify what I filed and the process has been a real pain in the A$$. What the letter states is an additional 60 days is needed to review your return. It states to do nothing but you’re better off to be proactive and find out what the issue is than sit and wait for them to let you know.
Good morning everyone I’m so tired of this. If my as of date hasn’t push out is it bad. It’s been March 25 since last Friday update. It’s not moving. Please help me out and tell me what is my circumstances. I received my letter for 60 days on March 11. I have 570 and 971
Filed 2/12 accepted the same day. Updated the following Friday with all credit codes and then a 570(assuming it’s for injured spouse) and haven’t had any movement since. I just want my monnneeyyy
Well turbo tax swooped in and took their fee lol. Still absolutely zero movement but at least I’ll get my full refund when/if it ever shows up
I’m so tired of waiting for the every Friday to come just for me not to see any updates this is crazy. The IRS just don’t care this year no one from January that I know hasn’t receive a date or any updates. file 1/29 Ac 1/29 2/9 4464c letter (60 days up 4/8) 2/17 WMR delay message ( Haven’t changed since) I’m a weekly 20240705 3/4 Processing date 3/4 as of Date (hasn’t changed since 3/4) my amount is sitting in the Account area -X,998.00 have all good codes ending with a 570
The only change is my as of date went from 3-11-24 to 4-22-24. Well it’s something.
My transcript updated today with now a letter being sent out 4/22, I called the rep stated my verification was closed on 3/14 and a 4466 letter is being sent out has anyone received this letter what is it? I was approved sine 1/29 and still awaiting.
@Shelleybeansss: do you think the freeze is because of the identity verification or maybe something else?
@Amy19: I worked for the irs call center but had my training held at that office and can say with confidence I would rather deal with the people at the 800 number. Less than 10% of the desks have people at them and to say they are understaffed here in Jacksonville is a massive understatement. They operate out of a floor of Bank of America. Very very very small “hub” basically
@shelleybeanss: Have you tried calling your local IRS office? Maybe they can help over the phone or by giving you an appointment to come in. Either way, have your paperwork and documents in front of you. I hope this helps.
60 days are up on the 11th. Of course I didn’t update this week. Why would I? I haven’t updated since late February. Not like I need the money or anything. More than likely will go the full 120 days. I’m overly irritated by the entire situation and have lost all hope that I’ll even see a return this year. Never have I ever experienced this from the IRS before. At this point idk what else so to do, I’m out of patience.
Only update is my as of date pushed out for 4/22/24 still says no return on file! I’m weekly update! Verified 3/26/24! Why the as of date pushed out so long?
@Shelleybeansss: do you think the identity verification has anything to do with it?
day 64 same bs
@Nate: an 810 is like a 570. It just means they’ve frozen the refund status and are examining your return
Received an 810 code, transcript still empty and as of date moved from 4/15 to 4/22. Anyone knows what’s going on??
They added 971 & 977 overnight
@Rere: how long after your 971 did you get your 846
Hi Everyone, I’m a 1005er and just received my 846 for DDD of 4/12/24 after having the 971 code holding me up about my 2 dependents which are my boys that a nice rep helped me fix over the phone by fax via amending my return. Will I receive my ddd earlier as I will be getting a check after this tax company did so much crap to my return.
@IRSSTINKS: I did the same on February 26th and still no change. Was told the middle of March they’d received documents. When I called the IRS Monday I was told give them at least end of May to review. I wish you the best.
Should i amend my return because my tax lady left off a W2 and it was 2,000? i have code 570 and 971 for past 2 months
I finally decided to cave and call. Automated system keeps disconnecting before I can even get thru IVR prompts. Going on 2.5 months since I filed. Really REALLY need that refund. Our housing depends on it this year. I’m def one to usually say “don’t count on a tax refund” but just coming off a year where I was out of work 8 months due to a major accident, kids n I definitely need it this year.
@Mitch: no it’s not… things are getting harsh for me now and the IRS stalling is costing me more than I want to lose.
@LostNthesauce:
accepted 03/07
simple 1040
my 152 disappeared today and wording changed to
STILL being processed.
Not sure if that is ominous yet…
time will tell.
@Pnicole: yeah 👍🏽 best to my knowledge!!! The 152 is a standard message about how you’ll receive your direct deposit!!! The new message update is the one that is actually processing our tax return! It follows well for a transcript update for tomorrow!!! Keeping hope alive!
@LostNthesauce: is this a good thing cause mine did too but no tax topic 152
@PaidMyOwnStudentLoansGal: I said the same thing they dont have the money and are stalling im on day 63 no changes or notices
@Fact$: 05
@AnotherTaxyr: well I am sorry to hear that but at least that tells me that it is not just me.
UPDATE 1/29ner!!! So I just checked wmr and it changed from “we received your tax return and it is STILL being processed” to “We received your tax return and it is BEING processed” verified 3/22 was told my return was verified 3/27 which was last Wednesday and I updated right after 3:45 cst!!! Come on Saturday update🙏🏼
I’m cycle code 02. If I’m under review will I still update on my day? Has anybody that had a 971 notice and then a 846 updated outside of their normal day?
@Harry a: what cycle are you?
