key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

Quick question after receiving letter and verifying how long it take for ya’ll to see any movement on transcripts and or WMR?
@LostNthesauce: I’m not sure if I received the first one or second one but it was about a week after requesting a new one when I received the letter. I signed up for informed delivery with USPS and they had to mail a letter to verify address as well which came in like 2 days. I logged into my informed delivery the next day showed a picture of the IRS letter.
Was anyone her accepted on 3/6/2024 with an WMR update?
Almost at week 4 since I verified and still no updates. Top 2 transcripts say n/a. This is clearly a mess and just gets worse every year.
@Floridazoo: f/a same day and was told a letter was sent out on the 22nd of February then was told it was sent the week after the 22nd smh! Here we are a month later and no letter! These ppl just lie and make up along the way! As of still stuck on 2/19/24 that’s beyond ridiculous
@shelleybeanss: same for me..
@LoLo: I will never file early again.

I Got My Refund Today!!!!
Hoping for an update this week. Been sitting on that 570 0.00 now for 5 weeks. No 971, just 570.
@Sdiego: I’m wondering the same thing
@Harry a: all services start requesting paying if chosen to take it out of refund, if it takes too long for refund to process. HR did that many years ago when ours took longer than the original expected deposit date
@Sheila_33: do you possibly have any info of how long a injured spouse takes to clear? I just see you on here alot so I figured I would ask ♥️ been stuck at 570 for 4 weeks almost and I have all tax credits with amounts next to them and no 971 code and no notices issued as of my IRS acct. Help! Lol
I wonder if I am weekly now that I am under a review for 60 days. Transcripts still shows I am daily.
We are always weekly on the updates (referencing prior year returns). We lost our vehicle before Christmas and this hold up couldn’t be happening at a worse time.
Checked transcripts again, with my log in it shows the same old no record of return filed for both bottom 2023. Top two still n/a. Wife’s log in for transcripts show n/a on bottom two. This is getting overwhelming and couldn’t be happening at a worse time
@Morris: I’m still here also, waiting on some to update … I updated last week with my 846. ( you must have forgotten)
Last time i use turbo tax they sent email today and want payment even though i have not gotten my refund, they can kma
@Journey764: I’ve seen those take awhile unfortunately. You might want to contact an advocate to get it moving.

@bowl: I would call to make sure your verification case was closed. You should have gotten your refund by now.
@Journee24: same for me exact thing IDV 2 Thursdays ago, only difference is last week my married name now shows on transcript. So hoping it finally process Friday to 846. Still n/a but some movement better than none.
@Red Dawn: I’ll still be here checking on you and Starr and others to see if yall got updates yet.
ERROR RESOLUTION – told to wait 10 weeks. Has anyone here very had their return in ERROR RESOLUTION and how long was it before you actually got your refund deposited? (PLEASE RESPOND)
@bowl: I got the exact same as you
Filed and accepted 1/29 as of 2/19!! IDV but no letter. Letter has supposedly been sent out 3 times! At my wits end. Called and told to wait till the 20th then called back told to wait till the 29th. This is just insane!!!
@Christina B: considering most people have gone well over a month this year…
So I filed 3-7, was accepted 3-7, and transcript still shows i havent even filed a return this year…… But according to charts, I should of gotten my refund on 3-15…. Anybody else going through this?
@bowl: same here 😩
Our as of date shows 3/25. Filed 2/1 and had to id verify in person. Lady said she released it for processing and no updates still. Transcripts still show 2023 for bottom two and no record of return filed and the top two still show n/a.

@Jennyb: mines is exactly that I verified 2/26 updated from still being processed to processing last week & my as of date pushed from 3/18 to 4/1
@Journee24: I verified about two weeks ago. I’m hoping to process this week and update with an 846 Friday. My day is also 4/1. So let’s see.
Hello, does anyone know if cash app deposits early? Thanks
@Shelleybeansss: I think that’s what they’re reviewing which is fine. It’s only $500 and I wouldn’t have claimed him except that turbo tax asked the questions and I answered and they never asked how much he made. Just asked did he pay for over 1/2 his support and the answer is no! Lol I don’t know who’s supporting themselves on $4700 a year!
@Blue3y3s: I got the same thing. Several of us have been pulled for review.
I spoke to someone last night at the IRS and they said that my taxes are being held and that i would get a CP05 letter. She said that she didn’t know exactly what they needed to verify and that there might not be any problems at all and that the system randomly pulls people to check and to give it 60 days from the time i got the notice for them to able to verify everything and to not to call back before the 60 days are up because they wont have any information for me and at this point i just need to put it in the back of my mind and forget about it until the 60 days are up.
@Journee24: it seems to be taking some a couple weeks to update after verification.
@StephTX: it could be income. If he had to file, I don’t think he can be claimed as a dependent
@StephTX: no 971, and I don’t remember what the letter was specifically just that it said they were reviewing my income/credits. WMR has said the sorry for delay message since mid feb with tax topic 152
I received the 570 after verifying on 2/20 online and 2/27 on the phone. No 971 just 570. I have codes 150, 806, and 570. I also received a 4464c the same day my transcripts updated from nothing to this. I noticed my 766 (credit to account) is missing. I have one child for child tax credit but this year my other child turned 18 and graduated in May and began working July 1st making pretty good money (about $3,000/month). I answered the questions on turbo tax and it marked him a “other dependent credit”. I started looking into this trying to figure out the hold up and I think I read he can’t make over $4700 so I wonder if that is what they are reviewing on mine and that is why my 766 isn’t there.
Just WOW! File Feb 5th accepted Feb 5th. Only up date on WMR was 2 weeks ago it changed to “still processing”. I have not received ANY notices in the mail. BEYOND FRUSTRATED
