key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Doodad: it’s not a turbo tax thing. It’s happening to people that filed with a variety of services
I’m hoping one of the minds on here could shine some light. Filed 1/29, accepted later that day. Transcripts stuck w 2/19 processing date on Account Trans, all others still missing. I’ve called the IRS, twice, and was told nothing was wrong, no letter was coming but that it was still processing and to wait up to nine weeks. Tried the Tax Advocate who said essentially the same thing. Even today, nothing. WMR says, were sorry your return has been delayed beyond the normal time frame TT 152. We did move this year, but everything else is the same. Refund is the smallest we’ve gotten in years, no credits, no EIC, just a straight return.
What’s up with Turbo Tax this year??
Simple 1040 and still pending??
WTHey?
Anyone???
@Honeybee82: ok great !! Thanks for your support.
@Starr: Hey hun, I’m good thanks…how are you? I’m know…probably anxious as hell lol. I would definitely take it as a good sign that your WMR went back to just ‘being processed’…because that’s what mine did the day before I got my 846. I can’t make a guarantee, because I think someone else’s did that too…and they got pushed back another week. But at least it means there’s movement! I’ll be here with you guys tonight though, cheering you on as late as I can stay up lol 🥰🤞🏼💵
How do you know if you are weekly or daily?
@Morris: That’s exactly how I felt! Obviously I was hoping for my 846, but I would have gladly settled for a pushed back as of date…just to see that I was at least back into processing. I have no doubt you will update to one of those things through the night!
@Mariah2024: if I didn’t do that I would still be waiting in that letter . Smh
@Tevia072783: You’re almost just like me with the dates….I was stuck on a 02/12 as of date and I verified on the 20th. I updated with my 846 last Friday, but before my transcripts updated….my WMR changed from “still” being processed, back to just being processed on Thursday….just like yours did. That was a really good sign for me, so I’m thinking you’ll wake up to your 846 in the morning 😊
@Mariah2024: no I didn’t get a letter I found another way to figure out my 14 digit code to verify. Do you need to verify?? On your irs account? If so and your transcripts are filled in under the 150 code is a 14 digit code . That’s the code that is coming in the mail. So just use it and finish you verification that way. Hope that helps
@Shelleybeansss: That’s what I thought too but I looked it up and it said yes you can claim your own taxes if someone has already claimed you as a dependent. If you think about it, I would need to get my withholdings refunded by law from what was taken from my paychecks last year and also if I made a million dollars last year, I’d have to pay taxes also right so I’d have to file my taxes right? Like even if I didn’t get anything, just for records sake?
@Sav0004: I could be wrong but I’ve always been under the assumption that if you’re claimed by someone else, you don’t file yourself and vice versa. If you file, then someone can’t claim you.
OMG yall im so mad I could spit fire 🔥 so a agent told me yeah a letter went out on the 22nd and it went out to the old address and to contact the usps to determine if its been forwarded! Like what the heck im I suppose to do with that
@Starr:
Did you get a letter? I haven’t got any letters. I havent even updated at all since feb 23. And that date I got the 971 code.
570- 3/4
971- 3/11
@Kris1234:you sent this at the timestamp of my area code lol but unfortunately I didn’t get my letter smh I’m actual on hold with an agent now to see what is going on! I can’t take another week of day by day waiting for a letter! Mine had suppose to went out on the 22nd two Thursdays from that date is the 7th so where oh where is my letter?
@bossca: My wmr says still being processed.
Hi can anyone answer a question for me?
This year my mom claimed me as her dependent (I’m 21) and I also filed my own taxes as Single. I was rejected on TT twice by the IRS and it was because I didn’t mark that I was claimed as a dependent on another tax return so I corrected it today. This is my 3rd time filing and it’s been about 7 hours since I’ve filed and still haven’t been accepted by the IRS. I’m so worried I will be rejected again. Has anyone had this problem before? Or have any hopeful answers for me? Thanks in advance.
@Emarto1: what does your WMR say? Could mean the system cleared up the verification & you no longer need to…BUT to be Safe if it were me, I would still call the ID Verification # & ask if you still need to do the verification, if so they can do it right there on the phone. If not then your hopefully good to go & just have to wait for processing. 🤞
@Tevia072783: same thing for us, we ID Verified last Friday in Person. After sitting since 2/6 & the system glitching & never issuing a verify letter. I logged on today the Verify Notice is finally gone in IRS acct & WMR for husband changed to just Processing with no topic from still being processed. Transcripts are still N/A & Blank tho. It means our returns were finally put back into processing, vs just sitting in limbo so hopefully will get some updates within or throughout this week!!
Did they pass the extra child credit?? And if so how and when will we get if we got our refund already?
I do not know what is going on with my account. Since early Feb my irs account said I need to verify and to wit for a letter. Today I logged into my account and the notice to verify is gone and my verify letter is in the mail for today. And the wmr has the same message that my return is still being processed. I just don’t know what to make of it.
I think instead of checking my transcript in the morning, I’m going to check my pending deposit on my chime.
@LostNthesauce: Good luck to everybody, hoping we receive our letters to verify today.
@Starr: Right. LOL!
@Tevia072783: At this point I hope that everyone that is verified weather it’s been 1 week 2-3 weeks updated tonight. Even if your not a weekly , sh*t we are all freaking tired of the irs and there bs. Come on 846 for EVERYONE!!!! 🙏🏽🤞🏽💵💵💵💵💵
I ID verified online and over the phone on 2/19. My transcripts has been sitting at as of 2/12. WMR just updated today from still being processed to is being processed no tax topic. Maybe it will be a mass update tonight or soon for those of us still waiting. No update to transcript yet though. Do ya’ll think I will update with a DDD tonight?
@Patiently waiting in the 954: thank you for your response!! Yayyy I really hope so, I’m truly over this tax season and can’t wait for this to be over with !!!
@Honeybee82: Girl, I sure hope so!!! I am completely over this tax season and I will NEVER file early again lol
@Starr: yes you will update tomorrow with 846 With a DDD on Saturday
@Honeybee82: Also Yes I did get verified on the 29th
@Honeybee82: Even if I don’t see an 846 I just want to see my transcripts get out of that n/a status.
@Honeybee82: hi 👋🏽 how are doing today? I have a question for you , as you know I verified Monday , and last Thursday my wmr updated from the path message to no tax topic and it’s being processed message. On my transcripts my as of date changed Friday from 2/26 to 3/11. My processing date says 2/26.
My 570 have 3/4
My 971 have 3/11 . Do you think I might update tonight with 571 and 846 ?? Or do you think it’ll change next week ??
Has anyone filed and accepted on 2/25 and received an update or DDD? I filed and was accepted on 2/25, No notices on IRS website. I do have 2023 in my income and wage 2023 transcript but is says my return was not filed…? WMR says I am “still” processing… any thoughts about possibly updating to 846 tomorrow?
@Sdiego: I’m praying we do. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@Morris: I wish you all luck too…I know how long you’ve been waiting! I have a good feeling though….you verified last Thursday right (the 29th)? Even if you don’t get your 846 tomorrow, you should at least see your as of date push back…which means you’re at least back in processing. With that happens, it’s usually the very next week when you update with your 846. Ya never know though, they could have processed yours quickly and you might see it tomorrow. Either way, I have no doubt you’ll finally see an update of some sort! 😊
@Red Dawn: I have the exact same dates and no notices or letters. Maybe tommorow we might update?🙏
@StephTX: You guys should definitely get it tomorrow! Especially you, since you verified on the same day I did and your as of date pushed back last week. That means you’re officially back in processing, so they probably just needed one more week to finish yours. I’m 99.9% sure you will get your 846 tomorrow! 😄🤞🏼
No updates and no notices. Filed 1/29 and 570/971 with dates 3/4-3/11. As of date 2/19 and processing date 3/4. I’m supposed to be a daily but I may have went to a weekly.
971/570 different dates…no notice. Filled 1/29…!
@Mroz: been sitting on 570 0.00 for almost three weeks myself and my as of
date is 03/04 as well as my processing date. No new notices or letters to date. Not sure what exactly is going on but I need my money 😂 the letter I got two weeks ago said the 570 was to verify “income/credits/wages”. So frustrated at this point
