key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

Was accepted 1/20, went to further review. Can’t remember when I went to just processing but it’s been close to a month of processing. Nothing for me. I don’t understand why it takes so long. I feel like if I don’t update later tonight, I will probably not update for a long time. Recieved my state from 2022 in October of 2022.
Has anyone that filed on 3/1 with an accepted date of 3/2 transcripts say N/A still? I’m weekly.

@Cbs256: nothing yet.
Any updates for anyone that’s weekly?
What does it mean when you tt152 comes back and your refund amount disappears and is replaced by the end of the year date for 2022?
@Dallis: hopefully they’ll update tonight or tomorrow night. I’ve never really paid attention to my transcripts updating. If you’re a weekly, should it update on Thursday night and youll be able to see it Friday night or it’ll update Friday night and you’ll be able to see it Saturday morning?
@TPerry: yes, mine too. I filed on 2/18
@PoorAndNeedMyMoney: I waited a few weeks
Hi. I could use some insight. I filed on 1/23/23 and I’m a PATHer so I waited patiently. On 2/27/23 I got a Form 4883C letter. I called and verified that same day. Up until 2/27/23, my WMR read “still being processed” with no bars. Within hours of my call, my WMR status changed to “being processed” without any bars. It’s been like that since 2/27/23 and it’s now 3/10/23. I know they said it might take 9 weeks, but I know from reading what others have written, that it’s not true. But how long should I be waiting? Thanks.
I filed on 3/1 and I’m normally weekly. I just checked my transcripts online and they say N/A. Does anyone else’s look like that? I’ve never noticed that before.
@Sheila La: yes so you should get the check but at least processing is basically at the end
@Cantcatchabreak: oh ok the agent confirmed they don’t need me to do any additional verification I wonder why they are mailing a check this time
@Me: I’m still waiting. I put in for a tax advocate today
@Amber: exactly the same for me. Filed and accepted 2/18
