key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Mia: Yes, Feb 2
I’ve asked this but missed if anyone replied. Did anyone from Ga get their state refunds yet? Also when did you file?
@Shanshan: on Feb 23rd. I received letter 4883c that morning and called when I got home from work. I called them right before they closed. I had to call since 4883c doesn’t allow you to verify online. Updated this Friday gone for March 10th refund
@Sheila La: you should most likely update this Friday if you are weekly. Same thing happened to me. I lost my bar and went to still processing and then I received a letter to ID verify which I did on Feb 23rd on a Thursday. Too close to update that Friday so I finally had wmr change from still processing to is processing on that following Tuesday 2/28 and then I finally updated Friday 3/3 with a refund date of 3/10. I am now getting a check mailed instead of DD since I had to ID verify. Not sure why people are getting checks that are having to ID verify
@Cantcatchabreak: When did you ID verify?
@LLHARRI: yes the same thing happened to me. I have a date of 3/10 for check to be mailed so I’m hoping I get it by the Monday of the 13th. I just posted asking anyone how long it is taking to receive the checks. I had to ID verify as well
Has anyone been issued a check instead of DD. If so how long did it take to receive it from the date mailed out. I originally had DD but had to ID verify so that triggered a ck instead.
I received a CP12 notice from the IRS stating that they owe me more money for nonrefundable credits but I’ve looked all over my return and I don’t see anything out of the ordinary that’s wrong. I had a dependant turn 18 last year, so of course my refund was less but I’m baffled. Anyone else receive this notice.
@LLHARRI: wow congrats! I’m in Florida too and I’ve been waiting on my check since 2/24 smh!
Hi, I filed my taxes three weeks ago and wheres my refund keeps saying information does not match and my transcripts show n/a. I called the irs today and they said they show no return filed, I’ve been trying to call my tax preparer, but they keeps saying they’ll call me back and never do, so I just wanted to know if there is another way I can check if a return has been filed for me?
My check was mailed 3/3 and now showing in my informed delivery for delivery today. This year’s has been one for the books for me with the IDV then getting switched to a paper check.
Typo sorry as date is on transcript
I have as of date of 3/6 on wmr say it is being processed so confused 🤔
If DD has to go through SBTPG do you still get a refund 2 days early?
@PaymePlease: I’m having the same exact thing happening to me I’ve never had this happen before
570 people
If your as of date is 3/6 and whatever issue with your return has not been completely rectified, the computer is going to push that date out farther to allow time to finish processing. If you’re a daily account that would reflect on your transcripts on Tuesday; for weeklies on Friday.
@570 Go Away: Agreed
@Kailand: 3-6-2023 is yours the same? Did you ever get a code saying letter sent or anything? I don’t remember the code. I didn’t get it though
@NVDIV: I’m in the dark with you friend. I hope since it’s the 6th they at least do something to our transcripts so we see some sort of change.
@Ayrwen: They just left us in the dark I guess.. Last week the IRS rep said something about waiting to confirm the numbers filed are the same as the ones reported on my wages.. whatever that means.. Everything was filed as it was on mine and my wifes W2s and i know that the jobs reported it because our SS accounts are showing how much we paid in this year.
@NVDIV: mine too
@Helpmeunderatand: Did you talk to a agent when you id verify or online?
If not you might try calling them cause mine was n/a and still is but the agent lifted the hold. So we will see Friday. Good luck.
Should I be worried wmr says we have your return and it is being processed . I filed 2/6 w/ eitc actc and had one bar that disappeared then path message that’s gone now but transcripts say cycle 20230605 As of date 03/06 My transcript codes are just 150 806 766 and 768 and it shows credit to my account and a processing date of 2/27. I don’t know why it’s not approved when people filing after me get theirs way sooner please help me
@Evy: so it’s not just me?
id verified 2/15 and still n/a on transcripts. Last week I updated to the basic
“Your refund is being processed” and that’s all no bars and no long messages just my amount
It was STILL being processed last week and then it changed to just being processed but it’s one little line. Idk I
Lost as Hell honestly😂
Any good explanation as to why Federal refunds are being held up?
@Kailand: My 570 code date is 3/6/23 and the other dates on the other codes are all 4/15/23 i have no idea what any of these dates mean
@570 Go Away: Mine is also 3/6 i have no idea what that means
@570 Go Away: what’s the date beside your 570?
@Meme: I’m in that same boat. 570 code, filed back in January and have received nothing. No update, no letter codes on transcripts, just nothing. Have 3/6 for the As of dates and the processing date so I’m hoping they do something this week. It’s crazy this year for me
Should I be worried wet says we have your return and it is being processed . I filed 2/6 eitc and had path message that’s gone now but transcripts say cycle 20230605
As of date 03/06
My idea are just 150 806 766 and 768 and it shows credit to my account and a processing date of 2/27.
I don’t know why it’s not approved when people filing after me get theirs way sooner please help me

@Stokes: from where irs a a tax place hun
Hope I can help someone in same situation. I filed turbo tax with ck advance and had to ID verify got the letter and Verified over the phone on 2/14. Transcripts updated last Friday with refund being mailed by 3/3. Wmr updated say 3/4 with refund sent/ mailed. Checked my informed delivery and I can see my check scanned in for Mondays mail. I am in Fl and check was mailed from PA. Hope this helps.
Thank you all
@Zhosa: I was surprised myself but I’m pleased that they’re starting to get more modernized. I was also happy when they decided 1040x amended returns could be efiled. Now if they could just knock it off with all the 570 holds, that would be appreciated. :)
@MOE: Processing date or “as of” date? The processing date is approximately the 21 day mark. The as of date is when something needs to be done by and if it can’t, it manually needs to be resolved and put back in the system to finish up.
@Norefundforyou: the EIN wasnt correct and I Originally filed 2.19 , and the holiday happened 2.20
Then rejected 2.22, on 2.23 is when I refiled. I didn’t see my transcripts until Friday nothing on WMR yet.. I’m an 05 weekly so maybe next Friday I’ll see something. My as of date is 3.20
Checks being mailed out The print job goes to the print shop on
Tuesdays and Fridays, where they begin printing
the checks with an effective date on the following
Friday or Tuesday. That is the same day those
checks get mailed. It takes several days to prepare
the checks to mail because the checks get
separated, stuffed into envelopes, sealed, and then
pre-sorted for USPS. While 99% of the process
gets accomplished through automation, humans
still have a hand in parts of the process. Once the
Treasury checks go to the USPS, expect a three to
five day delivery time, except AK, HI, and overseas
military post offices.
