Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Bubba Hick: It can get confusing sometimes because last year we had a lot of 05s that updated to refund dates on a Tuesday. And they thought they were weekly 05s. You just never know with an 05, they can be tricky lol.

Hello all. I’ve have been checking my transcripts. I have codes 150, 806, 766 and 768 on my transcript. What does code 806 mean? Is the account transcript the transcript that will show when you get the 846 code?

@Brandy: When you posted to the master file, that cycle code was placed. In your case, 2026 year, 04 week, and 05 day of the Irs tax week which is a Thursday. That code won’t change, regardless if you’re a pather or not.

@Vanee e: “IRS Code 766 on a tax transcript indicates that a non-refundable or refundable tax credit (such as Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, or a previous year’s overpayment) has been applied to your account. It reduces your overall tax liability and often signals a pending refund or a reduction in the amount owed. “

@needmymoneynow: Just be aware 766 is not always related to ACTC.

@Ca mom: 766 code is a Child Tax Credit – not everyone will have the same credit codes. That’s typical.

@Sheila_33: Any ideas on how to get through to an agent. I’ve tried numerous times/promts, but it keeps taking me to the refund status and automated response line.

@Mama3girls: No, accepted just means the IRS has found no obvious errors and has your return to process. Your return has to fully process to be approved.

@Mama3girls: Accepted means that they received your return and have cross-checked against some basic details (your name, SS#, and the SS#s of any dependents you may have) that’s really all accepted means. They have it, and they’ve received it.

@Broke_Momma39: If it was me, I believe i would contact the software he used via a rep and find out if they show it as received by the IRS. If so, the next step would be to contact the IRS. With it showing not filed and no transcripts, it makes me think he might have had a verification issue and never got a resolution. Has he changed addresses and perhaps missed notices that might have been sent? Id verify would be my first thought since the transcript won’t populate and no action is taken until they get a response.

System is being wonky already this morning. IRS trying to get two days of work done. Transcripts aren’t populating this morning and some account information is showing as unavailable due to partial system outage. Fingers crossed it’s this week :)

@Lin: Yes, it will generate a new code once they received it. “Refund cancelled” I believe.
