key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

@Kristen: Yup…. Same happened to me last yr……. Go 2 Bank is very good about posting 3-4 days early on any Gov/Fed, payment. I get me SS deposited on the 2nd Friday every month, even tho the actual deposit is not scheduled until the 3rd Wed
I don’t know if this would be different for pathers but how long after your wage transcripts updated did the rest of your transcripts populate even if they were zero zeros?
@Sheila_33: They haven’t. I can see 2025 but says no return filed. I believe I’m weekly. I was last year at least.
@DizzyD: HOPEFULLY our account transcripts to be filled out with an 846 code :)
@wamamof1: Have your transcripts filled out yet?
Hey! I guess us weeklies are next. I have all zeros on my transcripts and a long message about a delay on WMR. What should we be looking looking for overnight? Thanks guys!
@Kristen: I sure will! :)
@Sheila_33: thanks a lot for ur help
@DannyD: I sure hope not
@MSRazorbackPhD: Yes not this year. I was accepted 15th this year but got resequenced so wishing and hoping my transcripts update overnight tonight. But last year, yes I was an 05, received my direct deposit Friday 1/31 at 3ish PM using TT 5 day early and Venmo Bank account for deposit. My transcripts updated last year with the 846 code Thursday 1/30 overnight
@DannyD: I’m an 05 weekly, never have had any kind of transcript updates until Thursday night into Friday evenings. I think som 05’ers my of gotten switched to dailies, but if you were an 05 last year and didnt update last night, chances are you’re still an 05
I have a question. Walking the Path, there was a misspelling in my daughters last name. It was accepted (I thought it would be rejected & hoped it would be when I realized the issue. Her last name is Wilson & I misspelled & put Wikson. Will this possibly cause a delay?
@Kristen: You’re a weekly with a deposit on Friday?
I am noticing a pattern from other posts online. 05ers that 1st have had wage updated last week. Then had an update Yesterday with w2 and 150,766, 768 codes or path codes etc.. and tonight last one will get 864. Then have wmr approval by sat. So is still blank delayed a week? So confused.
@cici22: Thank you! You too :)
@Kristen: I’m hoping for my transcripts to update soon. We filed a simple return, no dependents, and if I remember correctly I always update on WMR Saturday morning. I’m a cycle code 03, so fingers crossed it updates soon! Hope you get yours soon!
@cici22: Thank you, I’m praying its as fast for me this year as it was last – unfortunately I got stuck in the early filer resequencing mess!
@Lin: Thank you! I’ve heard several people saying the same thing. Hope you receive it soon!
@cici22: Just responded to the wrong person, but I used 5 day early last year. I’m a weekly, transcript updated Thursday night 1/30, I received my deposit around 3ish PM on Friday 1/31 – let me know when yours hits! My transcripts should update tonight, so I’m not expecting it until next week with all the lagging…
