Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Did anyone encounter that the Free Edition of TaxAct is no longer letting you file the Healthcare Marketplace Form (8962) for free? I have used them for many many years and never had a problem – they don’t inform you until the very end when you are about ready to submit.

    @shelleybeanss:

You can get your tax refund 5 days sooner for free, if you open a Varo Card Account.

I received my refund 5 days sooner, I used it twice so far, and it came 5 days sooner.

Varo offered the feature and I was so happy I used it. I have used Varo for 4 years now and I love it so far.

@Livinglifeontherocks: This link gives a few reasons why a daily might become a weekly.
Path isn’t one of the reasons, since we’ve seen plenty of dailies update to a refund after the path lifts:

I filed last night with TT and opted for the advance. I know some have been accepted early before the IRS officially opened but I am wondering if anyone knows when the IRS will officially start accepting refunds…. Like midnight EST or 6amEST for opening day

Just wondering when I will know from TT if I was approved for the advance

@Spicoli: I have forgotten one of my W-2 or 1099 in the past, and I filed, accepted, and received my refund. Once you get your refund in your account. File the amended tax form. That’s what I did, and it honestly worked out. (I am not saying to do this, but this was my own experience.

Question for anyone that can help! Last year I was a weekly updater, transcript cycle code ended in 5. I was also had path act. This year we will not get held by path because we do not get EIC or ACTC. Will that possibly cause a change in cycle to a daily? or will we still be a weekly? We filed on January 22 and it was accepted my IRS on January 23.

@confused in ohio: since they just started the 5 day sooner option a year or two ago, hopefully they’re getting it worked through the issues. Some saw it a few days sooner last year in here but most ended up seeing it on their DDD and TT refunded the fee they charged for it. I opted for the advance so unsure this year what, if any, the fee was for the 5 days.

@Notgoing2argue: it’s not that it’s illegal. It’s just impossible. But believe what you want. I worked for the IRS as an Agent; they cannot release those funds until mid February. The system freezes all PATH until after February 15.

@confused in ohio: last year most on path didn’t see their refund that 5 days sooner and were refunded the fee. In order to apply for the advance you have to select no when it asks if you want your refund 5 days sooner. Turbo tax isn’t transparent with offering it anymore. It used to be shown with al other options but now you have to say no to the 5 days sooner thing and then a drop down appears and it’s the second to last option. TT has gotten more shady

@AndiB: no way possible there is a c freeze if you have eitc or actc you can have ctc and get refund but if you have eitc no way to get refund before Path lifts been doing this on here for to long and have seen others try and say that it’s no way possible it’s law

@AndiB: You may think you got EITC and CTC but there’s no chance that you’d get it anytime before the path lift

@AndiB: don’t bother telling anyone here you’ve gotten it early on PATH. There’s a thread for test batch pathers you can read. I literally got my refund in January with EITC and CTC once.

I was accused of lying for clout. Bc “it’s illegal” as if the govt isn’t doing 100’s of illegal things a day.

@Celtics1973: TT152 usually shows up for me about a week after acceptance once I actually start moving through the system. Especially with test batch. I see no movement of any kind until a week into the regular tax season and then TT152 pops up

@Charlotte: test batch is truly random. It isn’t based at all on how you file or who you file with. It’s random. Test batch ended last week but opening tax day is tomorrow

@AndiB: you cannot receive your refund before mid February with eitc. It’s written law. If you received your refund that quickly you are not claiming EITC

I e-filed with H&R Block on 1/18 and was accepted 1/22. I have CTC, EIC, and 8379 (filed with return). Is it possible to be part of a test batch with an injured spouse form; has anyone went through this?

    • I Got My Refund!

I moved to NYC from Indiana and this is my first time filing taxes in New York. Does New York State refund piggy back off of federal where you can’t get it until after you’ve gotten your federal? Are state refunds affected by PATH? I go through this every year and it’s like I completely forget the rules every time tax season comes around again.

Little confused. I was sure the first bar on wmr was “accepted” but my first bar says “received “. Plus always get tax topic 152 link but know just a link called refunds. Strange
