key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.

@Jesuiswater: me either and I just noticed the ones that were accepted same day went through FreetaxUSA. I went with TT but every year I always get accepted same day. Minutes later. :(
@JustAshe: 2/15 is the date the freeze comes off but 2/17 is when you’ll process and the refund is released.
@JustAshe:tax preparing website I use said 2/17.
Hello again all! I just filed today. Is path 2.15 this year?
@Akwildbaby: when did you file yesterday? I filed yesterday around 2pm est :( still not accepted.
@Mike: Good luck Mike!
Well let the fun begin lol. Filed last night around 10PM. Accepted today about 245PM. Will update filing details when I get home. How is everyone?
I’m path but I filed yesterday and was accepted today. So yay!
@Too Much Snow: Congratulations! Looks like acceptances are beginning again. I was getting discouraged.
@Sheila_33: Yes your correct. I’ll continue to check for the next few days..😊
@Zeethegeek23: I would think so. I’ve always been accepted in the test batch unless it’s just been a time I’ve filed later and then was accepted immediately. Yesterday things picked up in late afternoon so hoping for the same today.
Happy Tax Season, Everyone! Quick update, I filed yesterday via TT desktop. Just got notified my return has been accepted by the IRS, W2 and CTC only.
@Yandyy00: I wouldn’t worry about not seeing updates on transcripts today because I have not seen anyone update. Its possible that it could be the lottery ticket winnings but its too early to tell. Let’s see if anything changes tomorrow or Saturday morning on the Wmr.😊
If we don’t get accepted today or tomorrow, is it for sure that we’ll get accepted on Monday?
@Walter DOG: Thank you..All will go well for you as well😊
@Walter DOG: I logged into my account. Its no letters sent out or online letters.I went to menu and pull down everything. Nothing about ID verify.I will check everything again in the morning.I was thinking they may have to verify a 10k lottery ticket from last year..Who knows..I check again tomorrow
@Yandy00: going well thank you hope your well if it’s not I’d verify it’s probably since you filed early irs doesn’t have your w2 yet from your employer so when they get it it will finish processing
@Walter DOG: Okay thank you
