Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.

That’s where we step in.

Get the dates, skip the guessing.

Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Check the IGMR Refund Cycle Chart and see when your money’s coming.

IRS Update Cycle

Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.

Transcripts

This is what your IRS transcript can tell you about your tax refund.

Transaction Codes

Lookup the codes that you see on your tax return transcript and what they mean.

Daily vs. Weekly

Find out if you have a daily or weekly account with the IRS and what it means.

When are Updates?

The IRS has regular mass update cycles.

WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?

Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.

WHEN DO transcripts update?

Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated:

I received the LTR 12C asking for my 1099-NEC. I sent the documents in on Monday, March 31, 2025. My transcripts updated to 04-14-2025, and this morning it updated to 04-07-2025, and then an hour later to 04-21-2025.

Does anyone have any idea when I can expect my refund? My Return Transcript still has the 2024 Verification of Non-Filing Letter [PDF], as though it has not processed. I want my money.

So I finally was able to speak to someone about my taxes today. I filed on 2/3/25 and had only received my state taxes only so I was trying to figure out what was going on with the federal.. they told me that my taxes were under review and to not expect them until August.. now keep in mind I do not have ANY codes or ID verify or anything just the standard run of the mill Tax Topic 152….. that agent I spoke to was real ignorant so I am not sure if he even knew what he was talking about I am going to call again Monday

So now I have a case open with SSA to adjust my wages and have an appointment with local irs office 5/1 to see if I can do anything to help speed it along. I’m not expecting anything until maybe 3 months from now.

By the way, I never had any updates to my transcripts until it fully updated and released today. My cycle code ended up being 20251404 so I didn’t even start processing until after ID verify. Verified online. Also split refund into two accounts so if you did that and need to verify, you will need to use the first account listed for verification.

@Nat Bat: yes I did for 2023 and I had to call irs let them know that it was not me. They verified everything with me including my identity and they started to process my 2024 return but I went into the irs building to do everything. They will give you a PIN moving forward but nothing much else was needed. It was simple

    Reply
  29. Nat Bat

@orianasenoj: really? You had fraudulent w2s under your ssn? What did you do? Obviously irs caught it back in February I’ve had a 570 hold since 2/6. But it’s April now and I have no movement. Did you contact ssa as well?

    Reply
  30. Nat Bat

@Stillwaitingsincejan: I have no idea at this point. Even if I submit an amended return, I’m really just resubmitting my whole tax return again aren’t I? Cause everything was correct expect those two fraudulent w2s. And amended returns take up to 16 weeks don’t they? I don’t even know what to do at this point. I’m just waiting to see if SSA can do something cause IRS is basically telling me to give them the 120 timeframe

Which I called on the 19th of March to get a tax advocate which they told me that someone will contact me within two weeks. Called today at my two weeks having not heard from them they tell me that they never submitted it because I needed to id verify but failed to inform me and that I can not get a tax advocate until June for this issue but that my wages and taxes have been verified just waiting to verify my credits claimed. This is insane. I’m like why didn’t the rep tell me I couldn’t get a tax advocate until verified. This is ridiculous she should have told me that. She said I’m just waiting for the release code. Like I asked her why is the computer not checking weekly to verify it’s not hard.

I don’t know why this whole time I have been only pulling my account transcript. This morning I finally pulled my wage & income transcript just to look and realized someone submitted 2 fraudulent W2s under my name and ssn stating I made over $166k last year! I was livid! Spent all morning on the phone with IRS and SSA as the amounts were reflecting on my SSA account as well. Finally got a case open with SSA to correct my wages which can take 90 days. Now I know why there was a 570 code since 2/7. I’m not even going to see this return until Fall. Anyone went thru this and have any other advice? =(

Has anyone did the ID verification and the rep tell them that they processed on March 29, 2025 and was closed out just needed to verify? If so how long did it take for you to update with the 846?

Spoke to IRS today had the nicest rep ever assist me she let me know its a review of the amounts entered because they dont have my 1099 R from my 401k withdrawal. So thats the hold up but had I not put it on my return there would be no hold up. I did that 1 year and ended up owning so I made sure it was on there this year ugh. Now I have to wait for CP05 notice to send in a copy of my 1099R

So a quick update I filed my taxes on Jan 29th for 2022,2023,2024 the 2024 was electronically filed via tax preparer this is my first time using a tax preparer since 2018 but non the less I had to go I had to go to a professional given the fact that I tried filing myself but it keep rejecting it due to a form issue anyways I received my 2024 return via DD on 2/25/25 and I now have a DD for the other 2 returns 22,23 those were mailed in on 1/29/25 so a little over 8 weeks ugh the agony of the tax season hope all goes well for y’all

I received a tax topic 203 on WMR…but I also received a code 846 on my transcript with my full refund amount by it. Is it possible to have my return withheld after getting an 846 on my transcript for the full amount of the return?

Anyone have any knowledge or experience with 570 TC appearance date 3/14 and how long it takes to clear if there are no other issue codes? Return accepted 1/27. Should it take this long, especially since TAS is involved. Seems there hasn’t been much of an impact.

@Dollbaby127: that sucks. I verified on 24th and my return processed just waiting on 846 but before that was blank since 2/14. I also verified in person
