Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@Cynt_outspoken35: I filed and accepted less than 5 mins on the 27th also. My transcripts are done all good codes. And my transcripts only took 4 days later to be filled in. I used to be weekly for 10 years. This year I changed to daily. Maybe you’re weekly and just gotten resequenced a couple of times. That happened to me last year. But, I still got my refund I believe around 23rd of 24th of Feb

@Stillwaitinginfairburnga: The PATH Act requires that the IRS not release refunds to taxpayers who claimed either Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until February 15 or later. For taxpayers not claiming EITC or ACTC credits, refunds will not be delayed.

Yes. You’re part of the Path ACT

No pather that’s a weekly will update tonight or tomorrow with a 846 code. Just look at the past forums. Only Daily panthers will update this coming week, M-TH with a possible 846 code with DDD. Sorry. It’s not going to change. Same as past years since the PATH act started. Don’t believe me. Look back.

@pineapples: what are your codes? Do you have ACTC or EIC? Is there an 846 on your transcripts? The 846 code is refund release, which is when you get the 2nd bar on WMR

Sooo I checked my transcripts today (that have said NA and 0) for two weeks and now they actually show the codes and the credits. I have dependents but I dont have the PATH message. I have 1 bar; just check to see if anyone else has had this to happen today. I always update on Saturday mornings; but who knows. Could it be possible that I will get that second bar tomorrow?

@Lady T: I’ve seen a few people that filed and were accepted on 1/19 talk about no movement. Not sure why–especially when you don’t have the credits that hold a lot of us back.

    Reply
  30. Lady T

I filed on 1/19 accepted same day. WMR says still processing with amounts. No transcripts. Only wage and it says no return filed. No path. I did check my past deposits and last years I got it on Feb 11 and the year before Feb 20. I don’t know why there has been no movement on my transcript.

  31. nzxomx

My situation is similar to @Kee.

I filed 01/28, accepted 01/30. Had One bar, it is has disappeared a few days ago on WMR. No referenced error code.

‘As Of Date’ of 02/20, but the transcripts themselves are blank as of a few minutes ago. My return is super simple – claimed single, no dependents, no tax credits, just a single W2 for wages. Never been audited

State is CO, and haven’t heard or seen anything on that front but I think they were slower last year too if I recall.

    • I Got My Refund!

    @vannyy:
This was what IRS calculated I owed:
    150 Tax return filed 20220405 02-14-2022 $XXXX.XX (more)

This is what was withheld from my check:
    806 W-2 or 1099 withholding 04-15-2022 -$XXXX.XX (less)

While I received other credits like 766 and 768, the difference of what I owed 150 – 806 = total still due was then reduced from my credits in order to achieve my refund.

$0.00 next to your 150 code indicates you don’t owe anything on your tax return you filed. Since my 150 was more than my 806 code, that meant I still owed some tax on what income I made.

@vannyy: 150 is return received and if it has an amount beside it, then it’s your tax liability. No amount means it’s just acknowledging that your return was received.

Every year they say most people on path will see money at the end of Feb. I see it last wed or first Wed in March. It’s been like that for the last 5 years. I filed 2/1 and I didn’t update nothing today still N/A hoping next week then DDD for 23rd.

@Mary: Thank you very much ma’am for your prompt response! I am just now seeing it but I really appreciate the input. I have never had an audit however I did have an identity theft 5 years ago and then review of credits in 2021 I had a hold due to claiming recovery rebate that they removed from my refund, which in fact is still owed to me but was paid out to
Santa Barbara Bank mistakenly where I had fees taken for filing through turbo tax, instead of my personal account never as of yet reimbursed to me. Both of those years my return was held til mid year so I am a bit nervous with the IRS.
