key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Not logged in kdinaz: you think that’s it? In super worried! I do have an as of date for the 20th
Hi everyone question I have N/A for all T-scripts I filed 2/7 I called to see if I had a offset it said I did then but the day after it was gone do they take offsets even before you are processed? I don’t see how it could clear when debt is still showing on irs account
@KYMama22: most likely waiting for path act to lift on the 15
Filed 1/31, accepted 2/1..transcripts updated early this morning just waiting on the 846 when path lifts
@Sheila_33: Last weeks update my as of date went from 2/13 to 2/20. Then back to 2/13. I thought that date would be pushed out with this weeks update but it didn’t. Do you have any idea why?
Hey hey! I have a question. What does this mean:
My transcript is showing a as of date/ processing date 2/13/23.
I filed on 1/16/23 was accepted 1/17. I currently have the PATH ACT message.
My cycle seems to be weekly (20230405).
Do this mean that my refund will be processed on 2/13/23?
@Patientlywaiting1987: I’m sorry to hear that .. I guess we wait together.
@Starr: I didn’t update either.
Anyone with banking experience? My state was sent to my bank which is Cash App on the 8th and I still haven’t received it. When should I expect it? It normally would have been here with it being cash app and I don’t have any offsets.
Filed 1/26
Accepted 1/26
Wmr still says the 21 day message
Transcript was as of Feb 20th but only account and wages were available with no codes this morning all transcripts updated will all good codes as of date changed from feb.20 to feb27 just waiting on 846 code
I have code 150, 766, and 768. Still no 864. Anyone know why?
@Gwen: If you’re under the path hold, that date will change once the 846 is placed. If not, and you have a refund date, you’ll see it by the “as of” date to make sure the deposit is made in a timely manner.
@Sheila_33: oh okay! Thank youfor link.
@Ohio girl: It usually comes within a few weeks. Hopefully, it will be soon, so you can finish up.
@Jasminefromnj: Its the date you processed and posted the transcript. Yesterday. This link can explain it in more detail:

Hello… Been coming here for years now. And I filed early this year with my husband Jan 17th 2023… I believe we were apart of the test batch… I ordered my transcript through the mail on 2/1/23… I got them yesterday.. and everything is filled out except a 846… It shows my refund amount due…. All the right codes the 150 ,the 766,and the 768…. My processing date is Feb 13th 2023 and my cycle is 20230402…. Never have I ordered my transcript and actually have it filled out already…. Since 02/01/23 it was already processed.. just waiting for a ddd now…. Was hoping for next Friday… We shall see
@Monee Unlogged: I hope that rep was truthful but i don’t blame you for being discouraged. I’m still hoping you’ve become a daily though and by Wednesday we see some changes.
All transcripts except Wage updated as of date moved from 2/20 to 2/27 and. Code 846 listed for 2/15.
@Frank Garrett – Southpark IRS Agent (aka buckey12): I’m exactly the same this morning…. all N/A yesterday, now I have 2022 Account and as of date is Feb 27. I’ll check back this afternoon to see if the rest of the transcripts have populated, but I’m glad to see some movement!
