key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

IRS Update Cycle
Use the IRS Update Cycle chart to find the days and times the WMR and transcript update.
When are Updates?
The IRS has regular mass update cycles.
WHEN DOES WHERES MY REFUND (WMR) UPDATE?
Where’s My Refund can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Wednesday and Saturday when a lot of people see an update. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see updates on Where’s My Refund.
WHEN DO transcripts update?
Transcripts can update any day of the week. But there are mass updates on Tuesday and Friday. Use our calendar to find out what day you can expect to see an update on your transcript.
So if my trascripts updated with a code 570 today, does that basically mean I’m screwed for a while?
@Amy19: yes ma’am, I am on path. I see it when I check WMR .
@KYMama22: Are you a PATHer? Either EITC or ACTC = being on the PATH. If so, you won’t get the 846 until that lifts next week. If you are not a PATHer, what is you as of date, code daily or weekly?
@Jenny04: It’s the best guess based on trends and the IRS cycle calendar. There are no guarantees as there will always be some who don’t update for whatever reason. At this point there is not much anyone can do except wait and hope for the best.
I have all good codes on my trans. 150, 766, 768. No 846 yet. Any idea why?
@chilax: same here
@Sheila_33: so ur saying it will be between the 16th and 23rd I’ll see it and not past the 24th u think??
@Sheila_33: yes I am self employed. I subtracted it and it does equal the account balance at the top. Thank you!
@Walter DOG: I would think so.
Filed with Turbo Tax on January 16th, accepted on January 19th, estimated refund date per Turbo Tax, February 9th (tomorrow). 1 bar on WMR, absolutely nothing on transcripts. This aint looking good. Any ideas? Simple 1 w2 return, single, no PATH.
@Sheila_33: thankyou but what do you think could have been going on both years with same as of date but last years hasn’t changed and no new codes do you think I would have heard something if something was wrong those years
@Mackenzie: 😊
@Walter DOG: Would I be a little apprehensive? Yes, cause I worry too when things don’t go smoothly. I get it. I do. But unfortunately, we’re not going to know much until this Friday I hope. Hope for the best, and prepare for the worst is all I know to do. And keep looking for patterns. :)
@Sheila_33: it’s so funny you said that, because when you i read that she had been a weekly for almost a decade, it gave me hope that maybe I would hop off the bandwagon too! My as of date is pretty far out though, the 27th, which is a Monday. I don’t know anything about dailies really though. Fingers crossed either way because I’m a seasonal employee 😬
@Dannii: Can you tell me if you’ve gotten your Indiana refund and how long it took from the time it was approved? Mine has been approved and I still haven’t gotten it
Your return processing has been delayed? What’s that about? Hope not audit!
Did anyone get the message on wmr about sorry it’s a delay continue to check back?

Anyone else shocked at how fast the process moved this year>? Filed and accepted on 1-31-23,…. Received DD today 2-8-23.. I also elected to pay my turbo tax file fee in advance if that helps…But still shocked..I’m used to it saying DDD around 2-14 ish
@Honeybee82: Me tooo im thinking if it post to be deposit on the 9th why havent chime deposit
@Sheila_33: Good morning I am worrying now look you think it’s odd that both 2019 and 2020 would have the same as of date June 6 2022 no new codes and 2021 is fine but what you think and this year I haven’t processed yet got delay message after having refund date when available
@Mackenzie: Its possible. My daughter was a weekly and this year changed. Partial transcripts one week, the next Tuesday she got the codes.
Is anyone waiting on Hawaii state refund? Mine says my funds were released 2/3/2023. It could take 2 weeks for my check or direct deposit. Did anyone get this message, and do you know why?
@Yandyy: It does make me wonder, since that’s the only thing that’s changed. Hopefully, that 1099 is verified quickly with SSA. Have you checked to see if its showing up on the Social security site?
