key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

I guess the responses and conversation on here seems to be dying however for those of you with a DDD congratulations! I have 1 request please stop complaining because you didn’t get it early just be thankful you know it’s coming because there are some people on here with serious question and do no have a DDD. Now with that being said is there anyone who has ever had the 971 code followed by 570? What does it usually mean and how long did it take to receive your refund there are people in this chat who have been asking please and thank you
@Pearlmarto: I am in the same boat praying we get a update in the morning
Filed an amended return on 02/12, just received CP05 on original return. Do I ignore that notice since I’ve already filed an amended?
@S&t: usually they want to make sure your processed by then, or if it needs more done they will change the as of date

I have a question… if my federal went to CK and I filed my state through TT as well, is my state refund going to go to CK as well?
@Alliecatt: Go In Person And Do It Instead Of Waiting For The Letter.
Filed and accepted on 1/27. A week later my WMR went from received to still processing. Received ID verify letter on 2/19 and verified online the same day. This morning the WMR went from still processing to we have received your tax return and it is being processed. Tax transcript is still blank. I am hoping that there is movement tomorrow morning.
@Montana.NotSignedIn: I got a 570 code with a notice sent code. But no notice
Filed & accepted 2/2. Still blank transcripts. No letters no codes no take action message nothing. Anyone else?
Filed 2/18/25, accepted 2/28/25. Had non filer on transcript. EIC and Child Credit. Woke up this morning with 846 on transcript for 3/4/25. I usually have DDD 8 days after being accepted. Seems to be one week behind this year. I am a 04 cycle number.
@EbNAtl: I didn’t bother checking GA’s WMR and chime woke me up at 3am with my refund deposit notification. So grateful this tax year is over. Sending positivity and happy thoughts that everyone will get their expected DD on time at least, with the whole 5 day/TT fiasco. I will continue to use TT filing software, but will always pay the 39.00 free up front to avoid the 3rd party payer and have it sent to my Chime. I always get my DD the same day the IRS posts the 846 that way. Looking for a huge wave of transcript updates late tonight into Friday morning. I love coming back to see the good news. Another tax year almost done. 🥰 see y’all late tonight for the updates. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
@Gwen: My daughter sent hers in 2 weeks ago. Hoping to see some movement soon. It can take a few weeks sometimes.
Does everyone have a topic 152 that claims child tax credit and eic?
Congratulations to those who saw some deposit dates! Today is your day weeklies for processing! Good luck!
DD 3/5 see you next year.
@Alliecatt: maybe try irs.gov/verifyreturn. Was able to verify through this system this year. Also call Tax Advocate line and express hardship to retain a tax advocate, which is option 1
@Alliecatt: create an irs profile
I’m still waiting on my freaking ID verify letter! Blank transcripts, 1 bar. But my account says to verify. I’ve requested a new letter and it still isn’t here.

@RaiderBoss: I verified on 2/11 closed case 2/20 n hoping I update Friday I’m a cycle 05 always been
@RaiderBoss: 1 week
@Chrisc: how long did it take to get ur refund after verifying last year?
@RaiderBoss: Wow. exact same as me. Hopefully we update by tomorrow night. I had to verify last year too and was a cycle code 04
@Chrisc: i verified Feb. 20th too.. i filed 1-15 accepted 1-17
I’ve been seeing that this year has been wonky. I’m a PATHer, filed 2/16, paid fees upfront. Schedule C. No movement, no populated transcripts so far. As of date 3/10. Was weekly then changed to daily last year. Check my SSA twice a day for update to my actual claimed income because that’s usually a more accurate indicator of processing from my experience. Nothing there yet, either. Just checking in and saying hey.
@RaiderBoss: I’m in the same boat verified 2/20
Has anyone that had to verify this year received their refund yet. Irs says it could take up to 9 weeks to get refund.. my transcripts changed from as of Feb.17 to march 3 the day i verified
@Falysha Lynn: This early in the year, I’ve seen em process in about 6 weeks. Hopefully, you’ll see an update in the next week or two. :)
When would I see an update on a paper return mailed in 4 weeks ago today any help please
