key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a “queue” and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 26, 2026.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The IRS no longer publishes an official tax refund cycle chart. It has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Since then, dozens of versions have popped up, some better than others.
That’s where we step in.
Get the dates, skip the guessing.
Each year, we compile the most accurate Refund Cycle Chart, built from IRS manuals, payout trends, PATH Act release dates, holidays, and real user updates, so you don’t have to guess when your refund will hit.

Q@2blessed: updated on wmr
@Hereweareagain: Did you update on wmr or you checked your transcript?
@LongtimeReader: Still one bar and the path message for me
Finally got a ddd for 2/24 thank God
Check where’s my refund. I just updated for 02/24. See y’all next year.
@happycitizen: I got a little excited to go and check Wmr after you said you were a pather and you were approved with DDD for 2/24. And boom, still the path message with one bar lol 😂. I’m a weekly 0605. Maybe tonight.
@Paisley: They absolutely can release them “all at once”, or as soon as processing is finished. Anything solely waiting on PATH hold will be paid out in less than two weeks after the PATH hold is over.
I honestly think some are seeing 846, now because they have so many people’s refunds on hold for path. They can’t release them all at once, so it seems they are taking a staggered approach instead of people waiting weeks after Path is lifted.
@Tia: I’m definitely a weekly. Always have been for 8 years. I got an 846 for 2/24.
Cycle 0705, updated with 846 for 2/24.
Who does the fees for hrblock when paying with refund
PATHer: Filed Feb 7, accepted same day, just checked WMR says approved, DDD 02/24 ! 🥳 drinks on me
@Tia: yes I’ve always been a weekly. Never updated on any other day except fridays for transcripts. Never updated on wmr any other day except Saturday & deposit always comes on Wednesday except when it a holiday week then it’s Thursday deposit. That’s why I don’t think they always go by daily vs weekly when path lifts bc too many weekly 05 updated before Friday this year. Now if next year my transcript updates before a Friday then that means this year I have moved to a daily 05. But at the moment, I’ve always been an 05 weekly.
Anyone with 0405 cycle code update with 846?
I love this site!! It helps keep me sane through tax season lol
@Bri_843: Mine did the same. Just no 846 cause I am true weekly that hasn’t changed at all since Path. You sure your still weekly??
@Tia: 🙏🏾
On my tt account it shows pending is this a good sign ill get my refund soon?
@Tia: We should see it early tonight
@Morris: Yes agree! It’s only right
If the IRS plays fair, we true weeklies should see our 846s tonight early just like the dailies did.
@JAYY: I think at this point once path lifts, the daily bs weekly doesn’t matter. I’ve been an 05 weekly for 10 years & have only updated on fridays but I did get 846 last night. I think it’s been 1 other time since Path started where I updated before Friday after path lifted. But if you’re on 05 weekly if you normally only update on Friday with transcripts, Saturday with wmr & a Wednesday deposit date unless it’s a holiday, then it’s a Thursday deposit date. Before this week, my transcript was available but blank on the Friday the 7th & updated Friday the 14th with codes.
Congrats everyone!!! 0605..our time is tonight into Friday!! Hang in there! We can do it!!!
@JAYY: You’re a daily.
Question, I updated last night (846) around 8:30 EST time. I’m cycle 0705. So I updated Wednesday night. Am I daily or weekly? Oh DDD 2/25🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. Good luck everyone 💚💚💚💚
