Logged onto my USAA account and got hit with a W-9. For all you experts out there. WTF is a W-9? Took 2 minutes to sign electronically but I never ever had one before in all my years.

Thanks everyone. Not self employed, but the interest makes sense. Appreciate the help.

A w-9 form is a tax certification form. If your bank is asking you to fill one out or to update one, it is so they have the most accurate information regarding your name and social security number for IRS reporting. Chances are you have earned some sort of interest woth them, which is reportable on a 1099 form to the IRS.

Typically done if you are “self-employed, contractor, freelance worker.” Think of it as a personal EIN, whoever is paying your salary is using it to file that they paid you.
