The lady I spoke to you about my student loans on March 25th said they were suspending all refund offsets because of the pandemic

My refund was offset due to student loans. I made a payment plan to get out of default and have been paying on time. I was sent my refund check in the mail. Does that mean I’m out of default?

I had an offset for back state taxes. Got my ENTIRE REFUND on 2/26. There’s hope. Maybe not much, but there are a few lucky ones out there. I’m one of them.

My wmr updated last night. Entire refund taken by dept of ed. I was hoping to be one of the lucky ones. But I wasn’t. Showed full amount deposited until last night. Then it finally changed to 0.

The WMR stated that my redund was applied to a debt.
Good luck to the rest of you. -

@latoyia
How do we check our transcripts? -
March 1, 2019 at 8:56 am #4307232latoyia
If you haven’t received your refund by now and your DDD was 2/27 it has probably been offset. I checked my transcripts and my whole refund was taken by the state. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. If you have access to your transcripts i would go and check they probably have updated.
-
March 1, 2019 at 7:06 am #4307125TonyO
@Stacey no I hvnt doesn’t look like I’ll be getting it either on my transcript it has a new code that wasn’t there yesterday code 898 underneath the code it’s says my full amount of refund to the right of that it says 0.00 under amount. WMR still says refund sent with full amount so I guess I won’t be getting mine. 😩

I have defaulted student loans
I’m worried my tax return WILL BE TAKEN IN FULL. However WMR ( Where’s My Refund) is showing a reduced balance with TaxTopic 201.
I have been checking wmr EVERYDAY it finally moved to approved then showed sent to the but when I call the offset hotline it says my entire balance was to be taken still no update on wmr showing the entire refund was taken it was reduced by a few hundred dollars and gave me a date of when it should be sent to my bank which was 02/27/2019.Will I get my refund or has the DOE ( Department Of Education) taken it???
I ask because previous years when they said they was going to take it WMR reflected that and said my refund was applied to tax obligation with tax topic 203… this year I got a refund reduced balance with approved bar and sent bar and tax topic 201. Has anyone ever seen WMR say your getting your money then never do.. Or is WMR on track and the remainder balance will be sent to me?
I have to know it’s making me lose sleep!
Does US Dept. Edu get a first glance at your taxes before IRS approve and send out or can they go into the bank and get the money on the due date.

@amber I’m trying to get the same question answered?
-
February 28, 2019 at 9:53 pm #4306956Amber
I have tt 203 and two student loans in default. My DDD was 02/27. When I woke up this morning WMR updated to 3 bars and says my refund has been sent to my bank. On the left it still shows my full refund amount. But my bank still has nothing??
Anybody else going through this????
-
February 28, 2019 at 9:07 pm #4306939Tarie
On the TOP line option #2 you have to listen to the entire message. The beginning of the message repeats what you need to press to get info. But don’t press anything just listen. Then it will tell you the amount offset, who it went to and phone number.
-
February 28, 2019 at 9:01 pm #4306937God got it
Just wait until the 4th I’m in the same boat
-
February 28, 2019 at 8:32 pm #4306928Tarie
Can someone answer this question please.
For the first time I have a DOE offset per TOP and Mrs Reynolds from the IRS. They want my Federal and State Refund. DDD for 2/27/19
But WMR has no tax topic or take action code, no codes at all. It just has date refund sent and last day to check if not received, which is March 4/2019 and it says it was sent to my bank account for deposit. But SBTPG still says they have not received it, I just checked both of them. SBTPG also says they have processed all refunds they have received and next round is on March 4 or by then. Message shows after I logged out. But I still have not received my refund and no pending deposits to bank account. So could I still get my refund? Help please someone, I’m so confused?

I called the BFS hotline they said entire refund will be taken. I hope not cause I didn’t know I was in default.

@TonyO.
I have not. Have you? -

@Stacey did you get your refund?
-
February 28, 2019 at 5:40 am #4306353SammiGreen
The top hotline doesn’t give you an exact amount of the offset until the WMR site states that your refund has been sent. At least for me cause I called that line everyday until the WMR site said sent.
-
February 28, 2019 at 5:07 am #4306342SammiGreen
I filed married jointly on 1/27/19. it was accepted the next day on WMR. Had the topic 203 on the bottom of the site. Approved 2/16/19. Gave me a ddd of 2/27/19 and WMR showed my refund was sent to my bank 2/28/19 so I thought we were clear and was really hoping for a miracle that the money would be deposited into our bank account lol. But then I called the top line, option 2 and it stated that our entire refund was taken. Bummer :( My husband has $55k in student loans and I myself have $9k… What can we do so that our future refunds won’t be taken?
-
February 27, 2019 at 9:38 pm #4306173Stacey
The TOPS line gave the amount that was offset, which was my entire refund. I am going to submit a financial hardship form. I had some difficulties last year that might qualify me. This is if I do not receive the refund. I will update you as this process unfolds.

I am both.
When I call the offset number, and press option 2 it tells me my entire amount has been offset for the date of February 27th, which is today. My WMR still states refund approved, but not sent and the amount is still the same. No deposit as of yet. Will keep you all posted. -

Everyone keep saying option #2 on the offset line is telling them about the amount of their offset or notifying them if their entire refund will be taken. I’m not getting that option when I press #2. It’s saying either call Irs for refund status or call company that’s on my tax offset letter I received for further information. Can someone help me figure out how to get this info under option #2 pleaaaase

Got a dd date for today with tt203. Called the hotline and said I had one debt to state of New York and taxes may be offset. Woke up this morning to my entire refund in my bank account. Completely floored they didn’t take it and a little confused as to why…
-
February 27, 2019 at 7:34 am #4305286Maine
FYI everyone the IRS doesn’t issue the refunds the treasury bureau does. The IRS only processes the return once it is approved it is sent to the treasury bureau they check for offsets first and then distribute the balance minus the offset if there is one. That’s the only reason they give you a deposit date on WMR they have no knowledge of the amount of the offset until after it is taken.

Same here facing eviction and my tax return was offset I called the DOE yesterday @ (800) 621-3115 waited a dreadful 2 hours to speak to someone and was told to call back in a week and they would have received the offset in their system a can then put in the top hardship eviction application (over the phone). They will need either a court stipulation that’s dated within the past 90 days or a notarized letter from your landlord stating that you are facing eviction. Once they receive that you will get your money back within 21 days…good luck and keep us posted.

February 26, 2019 at 11:52 pm #4304698Kelly
I wasn’t notified of a DOE offset until my husband and I tried to get a RAL through turbo tax. I was frantic! Never received a notice or anything. Come to find out my student loan has been in default since last May!! I immediately set up payments and entered the loan rehab program. I’ve made 2 payments thus far and all my paperwork has been approved. This was the biggest refund my husband and I have ever received and now it’s being taken. We’re facing eviction among other things due to my husband and I being out of work for several months and we were depending on that money to save our home and catch up bills. I’m sick about it! They’re saying they are taking my entire refund because I owe 30k in student loans……where do I start? What can I do to get our refund back if they do indeed take it all in the morning? I NEED that money for us and our kiddos!
PLEASE HELP!!!
What’s my best course of action to get my whole refund back from offset? Injured spouse claim? Hardship? Prove that I’m in the loan rehab program? Idk what to do?? HELP! -
February 26, 2019 at 9:17 pm #4304402Tara
@shawna I have been trying for 2 days to reach someone at either the offset program or the DOE and have had no luck at all. It’s ridiculous that you literally can’t get ahold of anyone to figure anything out. Has anyone had luck talking to anyone.

I too was approved and received a tax topic 203 with a DD of February 27 like almost everyone. I know about the tax topic 203 very well due to my entire refund taken last year from unemployment. I called unemployment this year to make sure everything was good this year and I’ll receive my refund, everything appeared to be good. I called that number and 1 said nothing under my social and 2 said 1 offset for DOE. I am sick Bc it’s the entire amount. Only difference about this year is I was approved with a DD, last year I was never approved. I pray we all get our refund somehow.

My refund was due to be deposited into my account on the 22nd. I never recieved them. When i called the offset program it said I did not have any offsets linked to my social. I did not get a code 203 when filing my taxes nor did I get any written notice I was beinf offsetted. Currently on hold for 3 hrs trying to talk to someone in the offset program. Anyone else have this issue??

If it says you have no offsets you should be ok. Though if you owe back taxes that won’t show up on that line. -

Even if the offset number says i have nothing pending for option 1 and 2 they will still take it?

I have a message that it could be, 203 when i check the status of my refund. It’s supposed to be deposited in on 27th. One called the number for TOP everyday and it says I have no offsets. My student loans are in the rehabilitation program. Will i still get my refund?
-
February 25, 2019 at 6:23 pm #4302336Dj
Even though I don’t owe the DOE my entire amount of refund, I Called the hotline presses 2 and discovered the offset amount is the entire refund amount. Crushing news especially because I’m in a rehab program for my loans; and like many others, I had plans to catch up on debts, move, etc. it was not the news we were hoping for. Even though the IRS still gives me a refund deposit date, after calling the hotline hope is pretty vague
-
February 25, 2019 at 12:22 pm #4301745Angie
I am a little concerned…I have a DDD and the WMR bar saying refund “approved” but then I have a Code 203. I called the offset line and it stated I owed the State some money but I am also in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy and I was told in a bankruptcy I am entitled to my REFUND! Can they somehow still take my refund even though I am in a bankruptcy?
-
February 25, 2019 at 11:09 am #4301612Ann
We get Tax Topic 203 every year on our refund, however, for the last three years, nothing gets taken from our refund. We have owed debts in the past that was cleared up, but my husband’s always says Virginia Dept of Taxation. He hasn’t lived in VA for 9 years. I don’t recall if this was always an “offset” because of the other debts we had paid off in the past, but it caught my attention a couple years ago when IRS still said we have a Tax Topic 203. We received our full refund for the last two tax years though. It just gives a phone number to call and that’s it. We don’t even live in a state where we have to pay state taxes out of our checks. Maybe he just got lost in the sauce and actually doesn’t owe anything? Maybe they just didn’t lift off the debt or something and forgot? Weird but I’m sure he doesn’t owe anything. We’ve cleared up our debts a long time ago.

Did you check both options 1& 2 on the offset line? Also if it’s for back taxes, it will not show on that phone number, you’d have to call the IRS. -
February 25, 2019 at 6:00 am #4301034Jasmine
@BUNZ
When you call that number press option 1 and 2 I found all my info out by pressing 2 the first time I called I thought we was good called back after 12am it said the whole dollar amount of my refund was being. Applied to a debt I’m still pissed off about it for real -

Hi everyone I got the same tax topic#203 as well. I called the number and it says I do not owe anything. Maybe it is just to keep us aware that it is a possibility. I am scheduled to have mine deposited on the 27th so fingers crossed. I will keep y’all posted on what happens. Please if you guys can help and do the same. Thanks. Good luck to everyone!

How are y’all getting the tax offset hotline to tell you that they are your entire refund. Mine is only giving me name of company I owe.
-
February 24, 2019 at 7:55 pm #4300376Yaya
@Tiffany. You may have had a new rep that still does not understand the codes or do not know which refund article to read in SERP. A lot of these answers are available to the public; they are called IRM’s. New reps are mostly assigned to the Refund line their first season.
There is always a good chance though that Where my refund if off. You can have an offset and still receive a refund. You need to know the amount.

Well Saturday wmr updates saying my refund will be posted to my account Feb 27th , yet had a link for a offset , so should I not worry because the irs gentleman said there was nothing gonna take my tax refund or anyone else had this issue ?

Make sure you are trying both options 1 and 2 when you call the hotline. I didn’t have anything under option 1 and then found out it was the DOE on option 2. On Friday, WMR said my refund in the full amount sent to my bank so I thought I was in the clear until I checked on Saturday and saw that it had changed to reflect that my entire refund was taken for the offset.
The 203 message is up for a reason- many people over the weekend have been getting hit with unexpected offsets due to debts they didn’t even know they had. It could be for back state taxes, depending on what state you live in. I had that happen to me before where I owed the state money and it didn’t show up on the offset line. Of course I didn’t find out until after I filed my taxes. My state never notified me either.
Please just prepare yourself- it’s better to be safe than sorry. If your debt is less than your refund, you’ll get something back but if it’s not, be prepared for them to take the entire amount. You may also end up being one of the lucky ones but myself and many others this year who really needed their refunds sure weren’t.
Sending prayers and positive vibes to all of you waiting in anticipation.

@Justim @Paige. Did you try both option 1 and 2 on the offset line? Plus if it’s for back taxes it will not show up on the offset line, you would have to check with IRS. Hope that helps.

So I have a ddd of 2/27 and a tt 203 offset for student loans. The company is currently garnishing 15%of my wages and I’m in the rehabilitation program and I’m in the loan consolidation process. I wonder if they will accept the new lenders payout over my refund..
-
February 24, 2019 at 1:53 pm #4300087TonyO
WMR says my refund has been approved with a DDD for 27’th Topic 203 called the Offset Hotline it told me that I had an offset with DOE & that the amount was for 5,047 dated to be paid to DOE 2/27… Why hasn’t this updated on WMR is there a chance i could still get a DDD? Anyone ever had the same issue?

Jodi smith and did you have a student loan debt ???
My problem is I had my student loan taken to offset in November because I stopped paying my rehabilitation program so what the company did for me was transfer my account to another school loan department and I started my program there so I was automatically out of debt and owed nothing to them and I’m all set up with my other company so they said it would take 4 to 6 weeks for my offset to be taken off so I filed my taxes January 28th recieved January 29th but since there was a government shutdown THANKS TO president trump!!!! They didn’t update my information I still called the school when I had recieved a letter in the beginning of January that they would take money out my government checks (NOT Tax refund) and when I called the school (since government was shutdown ) they said I had balance of 0$ I owed nothing Sooooooo I felt safe I still would call from time to time make sure I didn’t have an offset it said I was clear UNTIL yesterday when some lady said I can check for a DDD pressing option 2 on offset # and I had an offset next day got TOPIC 203…… are they really taking my refund please I need information I don’t owe anyone anything I had even called it’s before and they had told me there was no problem I need info they don’t open till monday -

Jody, your post really gave me hope! I hope that is what happens to mine next week. I have same code 203 and called and pretty much half of my total fed is being taken but I’m really praying I get the entire refund because our lively hood depends on it 😔. My date is 27th to deposit. If anyone has that same date and gets early please keep posted.

I wouldn’t count on receiving a refund if you have a code 203 and the hotline also says you owe a debt, especially if it’s for student loans. All day yesterday I was excited because WMR updated to my refund being sent with the full amount still showing on the left side. When I woke up this morning and checked, the status had changed to my entire refund being taken for the DOE offset.
Mind you, I received no notice from the DOE that I was going to be offset and also have other student loans that are in good standing on my credit report. The ones that are supposedly defaulted were transferred to collection agencies that I have never heard of that are also not affiliated with the DOE. I also was never notified that they had been transferred outside of the DOE.
I still received my Hawaii state refund and even though that helped, it wasn’t much. I really needed the federal one to catch up on some bills. Had I known the defaulted loans had transferred and were going to be offset, I would have taken care of the issue just as I have been doing with my other student loans.
I wouldn’t count on getting my refund if you owe money to any federal agencies, especially for student loans unless what you owe is less than what your refund is.

Called the line before it said tax offset. Filed my taxes, it gives me code 203 but the refund amount is the same. Called the number today and it says no pending offsets for my social security number. This is confusing! Is there a chance I’ll still get my money? WMR shows that my refund has been approved.

So it says my refund got approved but I got topic 203 and said it could be offsetted.. it says I will get my deposit on the 27th did anyone have an offset of there whole refund but still get there tax return back?

February 23, 2019 at 7:46 am #4297890Kim
Transcript still says refund but offset hotline says they are taking my whole refund. Has anyone still gotten their full refund even though it said the whole thing was being offset? Just holding out hope here lol, not that I expect to receive it, but it would be a wonderful surprise.

@Dawn. They actually refunded your money?? How did you get that to happen? I am in loan rehabilitation right now and they are taking my whole tax refund.

So…….they told me I had an offset which I worried because of my student loan but I made payments all last year and am no longer in collections I called the offset number option 1 said no debt so it reassured me I was ok but after reading comments on here I just checked option 2 I have an offset of 611 dollars that I owe to the social security office for them “over paying me” which isn’t my fault so wtf how do u over pay someone and now years later I have to pay it. Idk if i should just let them keep it or do an injured spouse for my husband.

My DDD is tomorrow, February 22nd. However, when I filed using TaxAct, I elected my fees be deducted from my refund through Republic Bank, but they said a test deposit was declined and they will mail me a check instead. My only worry was how long it will take to receive it. Now my concern is topic 203 because I just found out all of my refund is being applied to my defaulted student loans. I had been calling the offset hotline every day to make sure this wouldn’t happen this year. It wasn’t until yesterday, 2 days before I am to receive my refund, that the hotline updated that my entire refund has been offset. I cannot find any information on what will happen if Republic Bank cannot deduct its fees. I’m worried now I will owe them as well since there will be nothing left from my refund to disburse. Furthermore, I contacted department of education, after spending 4 hours since yesterday trying to connect, inquiring about a deferment, forbearance, and how to get my offset refunded because I am not working. The man told me there’s no such thing as a hardship and that the refund is going to be taken and I cannot get it back. He did acknowledge that I am in a rehabilitation program and making payments every month. According to what I have read about student loan tax offset hardship refund, I may be eligible. Why is department of ed telling me this doesn’t exist?! I am just hoping I receive my refund anyway but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to slip past them because they took it 2 days before I get it. If I don’t get it, how do I go about getting it reversed or my refund back? Dept of Ed won’t help me!

I had been checking my wmr daily n had the path message up until the 15th.. The 15th it said we’ve received your refund and it is being processed tax topic 152. Then Saturday 2/16 changed to approved with a ddd and tax topic 203. Now my question is can I stop that offset from being done or it already too late plz help.. The reason I want to stop the offset is bcuz the human resources department made a mistake n said they gave me a over payment which didn’t happen and was a misunderstanding and i didn’t get a chance to clear that up as I just received the letter about it on 2/2/19 and was only able cal call the human services dept n not the treasury department bcuz the human services said to ignore the letter as it was situated and it obviously wasn’t.. Thank you plz get back to me anyone as I need this money for our home. N kids

My refund was offset in 2018 from a defaulted student loan. I rehabilitated that loan in December of 2017. Although, I was already set up on a payment plan (9 months) with the rehabilitation program, those payments had to be completed to remove any future offsets. HOWEVER, after making the 9 payments on time, every month, I WAS REFUNDED THE OFFSET AMOUNT AFTER MY COMPLETED (9 months) payments. Always keep updated with your loan servicer if you are in the rehabilitation program. There is light with patience. HTH

@Cousin Sam. Yes, that is correct. There is a statue of limitation on taxes owed, but there is not a statue of limitations on Federal loans, only private loans.

@Lacey Smith. When you called the offset hotline, did you check both option 1 and 2? I have been offset the past 4 years due to student loans and if I hit option 1, it does not show, however option 2 does. What codes are you seeing on the IRS site??

I’m trying to help my son.He filed his taxes and he checked his status on his refund. On there it says the IRS kept his refund. I had him call to see if his taxes were offset. The automated system said he did NOT have any thing. He’s a young man and hes upset. He had plans for the refund. He has no children and I’m almost positive we paid his school loan off. Any suggestions??

The past two years our taxes have been garnished and we’ve filled injured spouse to get my husband’s portion back due toy student loans. I did not work in 2018, will they still be garnished since my SSN is still being flagged as having a possible offset when I call the number since I had no income and we filed married?

February 17, 2019 at 12:27 pm #4276300Cousin Sam
@ Bradt…my debt had nothing to do with any kind of loans. This is about back taxes being owed and YES it does apply for people in that situation. Look it up.

Cousin Sam, there is no statue of limitations on Federal loans, only on private loans.

Just found out this little bit of info from research, but to anyone who has an outstanding debt to the IRS that is 10 years or older, they no longer can legally collect on it. To my surprise I called every offset number known to man and nothing was attached to my SS. Gotta love statue of limitations ;)

@Stressed Out
Research a student loan tax offset hardship refund.
The link below is a good starting place
And yes, they can take your refund even if you claim you had no notice.
-
February 14, 2019 at 2:15 am #4269157
If the loan was consolidated either with a Direct Loan or a rehabilitation loan, and your making payments on time, the IRS can’t take your refund. They could if you default on the payment plan.
I would continue to check the offset hotline and to be really sure you could always call the IRS directly. It’s not fun, but they would tell you for sure if they could take the refund.

I have not worked in 10 years. I finally got a job and was able to file my taxes. Called the offset line and it says 0 offsets. Called a week after and it says I have 1 offset for student loans. I called and set up a payment plan blah, blah, blah. I want to know if they’ll still take my refund if I received no prior notice. I mean no call, no letters, nothing. I need a car and to get my bills caught up so bad 😔 Help.

I’m still confused. Turned in my repayment plan agreement, have made 2 payments, offset line has removed my offset says I dint have one but the company says they dint understand why it was taken off when it still shows active on their end. My question is which one is right? The company or the offset line?

No, they won’t take it back. I’d withdraw every penny. Probably they didn’t certify it in time. Who knows. Be grateful and run. But they will probably get you next year.

Yes, the IRS will take your refund even if you are on a payment plan.
You can find more information at the link provided, but I copied and pasted some info for reference.
https://www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/refund-inquiries
Can I receive a tax refund if I am currently making payments under an installment agreement or payment plan for another federal tax period?
Answer:
No, one of the conditions of your installment agreement is that the IRS will automatically apply any refund due to you against taxes you owe. Because your refund isn’t applied toward your regular monthly payment, continue making your installment agreement payments as scheduled.

So, I had an offset and it was showing up on the hotline. made two payments to set up payment arrangements, called friday to see if my offset was on the hotline and it was, I just called today twice to make sure, and my offset was not on there. It it still safe to file or should I wait?
-
February 10, 2019 at 12:17 pm #4264542
If your offset is for Federal taxes (money owed directly to the IRS) it usually doesn’t show when you call the IRS offset hotline number.
Yes, your refund can still be offset after your return is accepted. WMR typically will report some or all of your refund will be offset when it changes from accepted to approved.
If you know you have an offset, the best thing to do would be to call the IRS Monday morning and find out if your refund will be offset.

Everyone is asking questions but nobody is updating! So I will update if nobody answers my question. On WMR, it says my direct deposit was 4/2. Today is 4/4 (after midnight) and it still isn’t in my account. I have a code 203 but nothing has changed. I did have an offset 3 years ago and it never said that my money was sent to me via direct deposit. It said the money was sent to offset and listed my return as $0.0 and my offset as my whole refund $5.475. This time it says money was sent direct deposit with a code 203. I call the BFS TOP number and it says “sorry we can not assist you at this time” so I can’t get any answers! I have my money deposited onto a green dot card and it can take 24-72 hours after the deposit to post to my account. Can someone give me answers?

I received a topic 203 when I checked the IRS2Go app. Stated my refund was approved. So I looked up the code. Seen it was for an offset for dept of ed. It was supposed to go to my bank today and didn’t. Offsetting my entire refund. Funny thing is that 2 months ago I set up a payment plan with the collection agency handling my student loan debt. Can they actually take your refund when you’ve been paying on your debt?

Wmr states refund sent to bank on 3/7, not in bank. I was approved and processed in just under 2 weeks. Now im seeing refund sent with 203 code. Call top to find out its department of education, I’ve never received anything from DOE, or anyone else indicating the debt was owed (I do have an outstanding loan), or that they would offset. Is it really offset? Can they do that without any form of notification prior?
-
March 4, 2018 at 1:32 am #4235144Destro
To everyone asking. If topic 203 pops up due to student loans. They will take your refund away. They usually mail a Paper over the summer stating that your refund will be taken away. It will say send and all but you will not receive it. Best thing to do is get in a repayment program to avoid this next year.
-
March 4, 2018 at 1:21 am #4235140Destro
If you still haven’t received your money even though it says send already, they took your money. It will show on IRS after the date it says to contact back if it hasn’t been deposit yet. I know by experience

My transcripts show an off set for $379 which is for an amended income from last year. That is the only things showing on it. It says remaining amount will be deposited on 3/7. Checked on irs.gov – stated that my refund was to be sent 02/22 via direct deposit, that day came and went with no deposit made into my account. I checked it every day there after and it showed Code 203. I contacted BFS and it stated I had one off set (which I paid in full 11/2017). I contacted that agency and they stated that I paid in full 11/2017 and they have nothing on their end that I owe anymore money to them.
It is 02/26 and still not have received my refund. Is there another contact number for BFS that you can actually speak to someone?? This is very stressful..

Opposite problem here. Our whole refund was seized last year. This year I called the line because we had that topic 203 thing and it said we just had one offset to the state in the amount of $200 something. Our refund was supposed to be $4266. Our DDD was Feb 22nd. That came and went. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. I checked the “where is my refund” site again today and it said my refund was offset and the adjusted refund amount is 0.00. I called the line again and again it just said that one offset. I don’t understand. The other day it said our refund was sent to our bank. Obviously not.

Mine is saying the same as everyone’s, tax code 203. It was for student loans. The offset line says it is taking my whole entire return. However on WMR it doesn’t say the refund has been sent yet.. When I called the IRS this morning they said that the money was released but they couldn’t tell me exactly where it was released to. I also called the department of education and they said that no funds have been applied to my account. This is the first time that I have ever had this happen. I’m hoping and praying that I get the money!

They have to certify the debt and notify you by a certain date. If you received your refund, you’re lucky. But next year you won’t be. If you owe student loans, call them now and ask for a $5/month payment plan to avoid losing your refund next year. I imagine it works the same with any debt. Payment plans should allow you to keep your refund if they are in effect BEFORE you file.

My loans were transferred to a new collection agency 1/03/16. They were transferred to government agency..
They are still open and it says no missed payments on the transferI found all that on my credit report.. They did not inform me of this debt being transferred or about establishing a payment.
Worried it may affect refund.. I was going to call Monday to set up payment plan..
Called offset line and it says nothing.. No offsets.. Still worried they might show up..
Still 1 bar and tax topic 152

Well, I called the Offset line and it says that they “MAY” offset but doesn’t give me an amount or anything, just a number for the state of Oregon. This last year I had court with my ex, where the judge ordered me to pay half of the child care for the last 3 months (which she had originally agreed with me to pay in full) and so it went retroactive. Well I have been paying on it, and I still owe $300 bucks. HOWEVER, everywhere I look, it says that unless she is on, A.) TANF or B.) The balance is more than $500; then it doesn’t meet the requirements to offset.
So I am kinda of in a bind wondering if they are actually going to or not??? It would be nice to know, so I know what to expect and how much I am getting.. 300 bucks is 300 bucks (especially when in mediation she agreed to pay the full amount and then 6 mos. later in court went back on it and played helpless)..
When I call the offset line, it says it may be offset, but EVERYWHERE I have looked online it says it doesn’t meet the requirements for federal refund offset. SO, my fingers are crossed and I am hoping that it doesn’t offset.. Anybody know anything about this situation? Thanks. -

Toya, are you sure that the letter came from the IRS and that it is not a scam? Call the IRS, not the number listed on any letter you got in the mail. They will tell you what you need to know. As everyone’s tax situation is different, it is impossible to gauge whether they will be amicable or not. If it is a legitimate offset, the IRS can and will seize your return. If your return was direct deposited, they can debit or freeze your bank account to satisfy the outstanding balance. As I stated earlier, it would be best to contact the IRS as it is impossible to determine or guess as to what the outcome may be.
Best of luck

I am starting this website based in recent information I have obtained throughout my own investigation of AAFES collection procedures. I am not going to lie I owed AAFES 3500 dollars when I exited the military on June 30th 2009 there is no shame that I understood that I owed them money. I could not pay AAFES anything because I did not have a job and my only income is disability I originally did not know how to pay them so I knew that they would garnish my tax returns until the amount was paid off. This year 2014 is when something smelled wrong to me since I have paid off my balance of 3500 dollars over the past 4 years with interest , I was surprised when I received another letter from the IRS telling me they are taking my tax reruns again. I started researching what was going on after I spoke to AAFES and the third party collection company that AAFES uses called NCO collections. AAFES told me my balance was still 3900 dollars I was floored, I thought maybe they were not updated on what I have paid over 4 years. I called AAFES two times because I thought there had to be some mistake AAFES told me no there was no mistake, I asked aafes how can this be possible they informed me that I was accruing 10.4% interest then I asked how much interest is this every month I was told 48 dollars and this included fee and penalties. When you add this up it only totaled 576 interest that i owed them so this made sense for the extra 450 that was added on I assumed again they did not have anything updated on what I have paid them again i was told no I still owe ALL of the money and the extra 450 dollars. I was given the number to NCO Collections I called this company and I was told that AAFES fee is not 10.4% AAFEs actually charges 19% interest upon talking to a representative I asked ” how much do I owe?” I was told that I owed AAFES $4900 I was absolutely SHOCKED. How can AAFES charge over a 1000 dollars a year in interest, the number don’t add up..I am here trying to collect stories about what happened to you I have been reading websites and I am not the only one, one story this guy said he owed 3000 dollars and AAFEs has taken his taxes for 6 years and now he owes 10000 dollars. There are basically two open balances one for 3900 from safes and one from NCO collection for 4900 yet i get latters saying they are collecting on behalf of AAFES despite i have paid AAFES over 4000 dollars over the 4 years.

I just realized I had an offset. I either didn’t notice top 203 on wheres my refund page or they just put up tonight(2/21 night)Dd was 2/21. Wheres My Refund site showed refund sent 2/22 right after midnight. Called number in Topic 203 description even though it said 9-5 m-f. Automated line said full amount sent to department of education yesterday. Transcript does not show offset yet, and neither does w.m.refund site. No money in bank. Looks like they got it. If a miracle of some sort happen like it did to some members of this thread i will be sure to post. I too had arranged a hardship payment an with the us Dept. of Ed., so i am super frustrated.

@hopefulmom3 I’m afraid it doesn’t look good. My husband and I are in the same situation. We had NO idea we were sent to the TOP. My husband called the hotline, the lady said to call our debtors and set up a payment plan and that could possibly stop it…it didn’t. Everything on WMR looked great right until the return was processed, then TT203 came up…however our transcripts still looked great. Our DDD was yesterday, nothing showed. Our transcripts show now that an offset took place and the TOP hotline gives specific amounts that were applied to the debt. I’m so sorry, the government is surely slow to give and quick to take! I’m out of work myself and we surely could have used our return. Best of luck to you.

Ok so on my transcripts it has an 846 Refund issued date of 03-03-2014 And a 150 code of 20140705 cycle number. Does this mean I will get my refund. the 849 code reflects full refund amount but the 150 code reads 0.00?!?!?!? I am so confuses!!!

-
February 19, 2014 at 2:02 am #20832offsetinLa
Did you check your transcripts? Usually they will tell you. It took mine a couple days to update to “refund applied to debts” and my WMR didn’t update to the adjusted amount until my DDD. Also my myeddebt.com STILL hasnt updated with the amount they took from my refund.
-
February 19, 2014 at 1:14 am #20831Amy
Does anyone know if WMR reflects the adjusted amount for the offset? Mine still has a DDD and the full amount of the return?!? The offset number says all my refund to be taken for student loans. Would they take what is past due or the full amount of the loans. Also when i got to http://www.myeddebt.com it can’t find any of my inf for being past due or defaulted. (specific government student loan site) HELP I needed my return to move home and don’t want to be homeless.

Hi Let me help some of you out.
If you have received this notice on the bottom of your taxes (203) offset, and its to IRS, forget about your refund. If you have received this notice and its to AAFES pay close attention;…. THAT is your warning.Your refund will be deposited if this is the first year you’ve seen it, but get in touch with the Army and Air Force Exchange and make a payment arrangement quickly. Pay this amount BEFORE you file next year or don’t be prepared to use it.
The notice you say was not mailed, has indeed been mailed. Its on the bottom of the MWR website. You owe, call the number, fix it. I am truly not wanting to be condescending but I called AAFES 2009 told me my balance, I laughed at them , and I got my refund, 2010 the same, 2011, the same….2012 biggest refund ever and guess what, yep, garnished…..I’m trying to assist you in not making my mistake.
oh lastly, if money is in your bank, spend it….. the IRS is not coming, they would have taken theirs before you saw a dime, other state agency’s like I mentioned, you may get away with it this year, but they are coming with 18% interest and set penalties.
sincerely, Former Jackson Hewitt Employee……yep, after all I knew I tested them..it hurt, needed that money… -
February 17, 2014 at 1:56 pm #20783cbp1230
@shay we are in the same boat! AAFES never sent a single solitary thing stating their intent to offset…but when we called AAFES they said oh no we haven’t requested offset, just pay the collection agency and gave us their info, which was indeed a commercial collection agency. Did you guys get your refund by any chance? I filed for injured spouse…probably won’t see my half until May but here’s to wishful thinking!

I got a DDD of 2/20 and was flagged for offset between the time I filed 2/3 and was approved 2/15.. I called the hotline and it said the full amount would be taken and credited to the student loan debt. Anyone get lucky and not have that happen? I find it strange I was only in default since april of last year and never recieved any warning whatsoever from the DOE or IRS. The last letter I recieved was January 15 from DFC services stating that they were trying to validate the debt. I know I owe the money, but find it a bit ridiculous that they are coming after me after 8 months.. :/

Can anyone update on their situation? My husband has not received a letter notifying him of intent to offset or anything but when called the TOP hotline it said our refund “may” be offset…well WMR updated last night to show TT203 BUT our transcripts show nothing at all. We have a DDD of 2/20. Could anyone who was in a similiar situation please update and let me know if the IRS did end up taking back their refund after deposit? Thanks!

February 14, 2014 at 10:39 am #20683KLE80
This was my situation if this helps anyone. I filed my taxes early and was approved on 2/6 with a DD of 2/10. WMR never changed and had my full refund amount to be deposited on 2/10 but I had the tax topic 203 attached. I never could check my transcripts so I am not sure what it said. The offset line said my full refund was being applied to my student loan debt. I waited and waited in hopes I would be included in the glitch and would get my money, but unfortunately it never came! Today WMR says my refund was sent to my bank, but it’s not there, and I received a letter from the Dept of Treasury yesterday about the offset. We have filed an injured spouse form now because my husband did not owe the debt. Hopefully, we will receive the majority of it back and soon! I hope this may answer any questions some of you may have if your situation is the same. The waiting is the hardest part and not knowing for sure! I hope you guys have better luck than us!

I had a DDD of 2/12 offset line said wife had a debt and the whole amount was being taken but now WMR shows refund was sent to my bank for DD. Will it still show that even if it was taken?
-
February 13, 2014 at 8:13 pm #20652shay
So, my situation is that my WMR states that our DD was 2/12 and that there may be an offset. It still showed (shows) my same original amount. I called the offset line and it says my husband does have an offset from AAFES and it sounds like the entire amount is going to be taken and applied to the debt. If thats the case, then we have no choice but to contact AAFES to confirm it. But, Im just wondering a) why does it still show my original amount and say it was sent to my bank. b) Why did I not receive anything from the Offset Department with any details. c) Im sure its wishful thinking, but Is there any chance I may still receive my refund based on others experience? Any insight is appreciated.

My transcript is showing 846 full amount issued, and my deposit date was yesterday, but nothing is in my bank account.
WMR is showing 203, but still showing full amount.
I am so confused! Any insight? Anyone in the same situation gotten their refund?
-
February 13, 2014 at 2:13 pm #20628Tash
ok so WMR shows code 203 which means offset called the 1-800 says hubby has one. But transcript is not showing offset code? just showing 846 which means refund sent and the full amount. what does this mean? will they not be taking the offset? thanks!

-
February 12, 2014 at 9:06 am #20517mt
For those that had the offset taken, did it show on your WMR or transcript? If so, what codes?
Mine still shows nothing on the transcript other than refund issued (full amt) but if I call the hotline it says I may have an offset and the WMR has tax topic 203 but shows the full amount.

Did you have an offset code on your transcript or code 846 full amount issued? Did you have an amount applied from the offset line? -

Yes, full amount minus the fees from h & r. I had a dd of 2/12 with tax topic 203 and the offset hotline said “may be offset”. My husband called today and it still said the same thing. I hope they can’t reverse it lol and I hope all of you get it too!!

February 11, 2014 at 3:16 pm #20277mt
I’m wondering as well. I had an offset last year and my transcript shows the offset immediately following the refund. I expect to pay it, but that would be a nice surprise to have it.
I’m thinking the offset doesn’t show on WMR or on the transcript until the funds are sent by the IRS. I remember last year it showed the full amount until the DDD, then it went to $0 :(
This may only be for non-IRS debt though.
-

I don’t know the code but my refund was reduced to $0
-
February 11, 2014 at 10:44 am #20213SadFromOffset
My situation is the same. DDD of 2/12…WMR says offset and shows reduced amount, transcripts show offset code 201 and shows refund reduced…sigggghhhhh…So I’m pretty sure they are going to take the offset amount (majority of my refund). But I just got a text tho that said remaining amount of my refund was sent to Republic Bank. Says should be available within 1-5 days (I have Netspend). Im grateful for the small amount just mad at myself that I didnt check for offsets deep enough….Federal offsets do not show up on offset hotline, but if I wouldve called IRS directly I could have gotten it straightened out before filing. My issue is from 2011 tax returns inaccuracy of income, Im hoping I still have time to fix and at least receive the amount of my EIC that year minus the penalties….What do you think??
-
February 15, 2014 at 4:36 pm #20753melinda
being that you have a netspend card and you had DD set for 2/12/14 how quick did it take for you to get
-
February 15, 2014 at 5:26 pm #20756offsetinLa
Transcripts don’t mean too much.
Filed & accepted 2/6
DDD 2/13From 2-8 to 2-10 the offset line said “you have 2 offsets, your refund MAY be reduced” . My transcript was also perfect with my refund approved. WMR showed TT203 but listed my full refund amount, with no money reduced.
2-11 I called the offset line again, it said the whole amount was offset by the dept of education (my husband owes student loans). But my transcripts still showed nothing different or offset, and WMR never changed my refund amount.
2-13 My direct deposit day: Transcripts changed showing offset, WMR changed saying the offset occurred and my adjusted refund amount was $0.
Today (2-15) MyEdDebt still shows i owe them $4500 even though they intercepted my return and got 99.9 % of that money, ( we still owe them $100).
Re-check those transcripts the a day or so before your DDD, also check the offset hotline on your DDD, you’ll know then. There was a glitch earlier this tax season, but they have fixed it :(
-

@Curious
Did your transcripts show the offset code of 201 or 203 and show your refund was reduced? -
February 11, 2014 at 10:37 am #20210SadFromOffset
@Curious
I say spend it and find out who you owe and make a payment arrangement with them. I wouldn’t send them a large sum back either, I would live life with my refund and handle it later. -

WMR is showing tax topic 203. But shows a DDD 2/12/14. My original refund amount is still showing. Transcript is complete and showing 846 hotline is still saying this $ xxxx has been deducted. It so confusing

February 10, 2014 at 10:40 pm #20130LB
Same thing here.. Had the tax topic203 andon the hotline it “may” be offset….dd of 2/12. My question, if they do to through with the offset, do they take state too??

February 10, 2014 at 10:37 pm #20127Curious
Online on the irs site it said the deposit date was 2/6
On 2/6 i checked again and it said my money was used towards offset. However, it appeared job my bank when I checked it later that day. I have since moved the money into another account until I am
Instructed on what to do. I am getting mixed info from all the different numbers. Who knows, for now I’m sitting on it.
My bank did tell me that the irs can reverse the wire within 30 days.Still no answers :/

@Malishka – I have heard that your transcript will tell you if an offset has been paid or not. I do not know this first hand as I have not been able to order mine, but from what I have read you should see an offset line right below wherever it shows 846. Hope that helps & I hope that we all get our refunds :-)

Hello! Curious, I am in the same situation. I have a dd for 2/12 but the top says they offset my refund and to contact Dept Of Educ…however on wmr I still have dd for Amt they yield me I would get…when you revived your refund, did top still say that it was offset?
-
February 9, 2014 at 10:02 am #19794Anastasia
Hi! I am dealing with a similar situation as well. I have a DDD of 2/12 but with the standard offset language at the bottom. WMR is still stating that I will be getting my full refund deposited on 2/12 but when I call the offset phone # it states that I have an offset with the State of NJ and it is the full amount of my refund that they are taking. I am current with my student loans and pay on time every month. I have never received anything from the State of NJ, or TOP (from what I am reading Treasury Offset Program) who is supposed to let the debtor know that this is going to occur. It is just such a let down to me because I had no idea that this would or could happen. I have had student loans since 2006 and ever year I have filed taxes and have never had my refund taken to pay down the student loan. Any advise would be really appreciated. Should i not anticipate any refund or should I hope for the best that the “may” wording in the offset language is to my favor. Thank you in advance!

I’m in the same situation. Just found out about an offset today. Had no idea I had one and it’s not on my transcripts but say so over the phone?! I will still get most of it back but I’m really wondering will I get it all or not. DD 2/12. Just got that today.

I was declared to have over $1K returned but I, too, am hit with the DAMNED Topic 203…I had the return mailed to my house instead of direct deposited. Any luck on that direction, anyone know?

I have the same question!?! As far as I knew my entire refund was supposed to be offset, but from all the information I have gathered today the IRS deposited the whole thing into my checking account. It’s been two days since and they haven’t taken it back, but I don’t want them to put my account in the hole because they yank it ou or something after I’ve already used some??? Though other than the WMR site, everything else says it ‘may’ be taken, nothing official on any amounts or anything…??

Im in the same boat just found out I have an offset, shows on transcripts but did not say I have one on the hotline. I wish this wasn’t true but seems like my situation is opposite of you guys :( One question, for those who still received their refund, did it show the offset code on your transcripts?

Can anyone update PLEASE? I’ve called every # I can find to possibly stop the offset which I did not know I had because I’ve been paying my payments. I do not have a job anymore, have 3 kids & no help. I’m honest on my taxes and do not have any assistance thus far, could they still depo my refund as shown on WMR site? My DDD is 2/24/14 and I’m really worried! Help!!! Any1 still receive their refund with a topic 203 possible status?

I’m wondering if this will happen to us as well? Transcripts gave husband and I code 846 with full refund issued BUT WMR has a Tax Topic 203 and offset line says we are being offset for xxxx.xx$….DDD 2/11…

i got a date of 2-14 but wmr said the 203 thing so i just got off the phone with a gentelman and he looked up my account and said it was mailed today with no offset and mine also said i had something when i called the hotline for offsets..so stay positive! and transcript says no offset but i read that it might not show up on there so the best bet is to call and see..if u get a nice rep cuz i called earlier and had a lady who told me nothing..depends who u get..i wont be 100% relieved until i see it come in my mail slot..lol

February 7, 2014 at 4:44 pm #19652What the @#$%!
We were also supposed to have an offset but got the entire thing. We’ve called offset on past Tues and it said “amount of $$$$$ from your refund has been applied to your offset” and we called again today and offset is gone. They can’t take it back once it’s actually in your bank but we won’t get in trouble will we? This is WEIRD!

So, what’s the verdict with those who got the refund? Did the IRS take it back out of your accounts???
