So it says that it MAY take my return to pay off student loan debt. Do they really take all of it? I called the IRS, as mine has been processed and i have a DDD already, and they said they see no information about an offset?

But my next question is, they said i defaulted in October. I worked all the way up until the end of November and have gotten unemployment benefits since then due to being laid off. Wouldnt they have taken wages or benefits already?

@Cevyn
I couldnt get through to an actual person. But i agree with the thousands of calls, i have called soooo many people today its ridiculous. Do you know if it went through the IRS number or was it different?

Treasury.gov states you will be notified in advance of any offset

I was accepted on 1/28, wouldn’t they have already sent a letter or updated a code

They did that to me last year.. it sucked.. they took what was owed and deposited the rest.. if the debt is more than your tax return then yeah they will take the whole thing.. here’s the number it’s gonna give you 2 options select option 1 then when it’s done then go back to main menu and select option 2 also.. (TAX OFFSET NUMBER) 1800-304-3107

What I was told by the guy at the irs today was because it’s not the irs keeping the money, they don’t send a letter. It doesn’t even show how much they will be taking (but the dept of treasury said it’s all of it, but never said an amount). He said I won’t know until the refund is sent and they intercept it.

Had the same thing happen today, and after hours on the phone I was told most likely they are taking it all

We received a letter telling us that we were getting offset. It also had a specific code on WMR telling us that we had an offset.

Would you receive a letter if they were offsetting any of your return? And would it show a code on WMR?

This happened to me last year. It was my first time filing as a married couple. We got a letter in the mail that our return had been offset by the student loan administration. Ended up having my husband file an injured spouse form. It was mid June before we finally got money back! It was a nightmare! So yes they can and they will take all of it. There is a specific phone number to the irs offset department. I’ll see if I can find it again!

No unfortunately I have the same thing. I call everyday hoping it’s been paid so I know my refund is coming. If it’s on the offset line they will take it

No it just says i have an outstanding debt that MAY be offset and to call the debtor for more info. When i called them they said they cant tell me if it will be a full amount, partial, or none. Do you know how to talk to someone with the offset dept, besides the automated.

When you call the offset line does it say your debt will be paid on your DDD?
