RICHMOND, VA (WWBT/WXIX) – If you’re waiting for your tax refund, you might have to be a little more patient this year.

A new report from the tax payer advocate service finds there’s a huge backlog at the IRS, which is translating into paperwork delays and taxpayers’ calls for helps going unanswered.

According to that report, only a handful taxpayers’ calls were answered by the IRS during the shutdown and things didn’t get much better once that shutdown ended.

But the report says part of the problem was an existing backlog at the IRS before that shutdown even started.

The report says the IRS was already behind on integrating the new changes to tax laws, which included new withholding schedules forms and more.

When that shutdown finally ended IRS workers returned to more than 5 million pieces of mail that needed to be processed, which included 80,000 unaddressed responses to earned income tax credit audits from last year.

There was also 87,000 amended tax returns from last year that still had to be processed.

The report says the IRS also hadn’t yet filled out all the orders for W2 forms from companies which were supposed to be out by the end of January.

The IRS can’t implement tax changes until they are approved by Congress, so when your representatives fuck around it holds up everything. Not really sure what some of you expect the IRS to do if they can’t update the forms and the computers because the other half of the government is screwing around.

None of that is our problem. We gave them that money and it’s time to give it back.

                Its all relevant.
Who are the IRS aiming there anger at???
People calling them and screwing with them.

People with the 9001 and 1541.
The IRS is backlogged and calling them is going to do one and two things.

45 Day Reviews flying off the hammer.

I’m not calling and I’m not going in there.
Unless they send me mail, I’m waiting it out.

Very little of that is actually relevant to those of us with normal tax returns awaiting our refunds, and 87,000 amended returns rolling over from last season is hardly cause for a huge delay. And I think a lot of us are forgetting that there’s a distinct division of labor at the IRS: the people answering the phones aren’t processing returns, the people processing standard refund returns aren’t for the most part even touching amended returns, and none of the people processing returns are performing audits.

To be fair, processing 180 million requests in 3 months is impressive. I understand most of it is computerized but damn.
