      So I was looking at my husbands transcript and it has a code of 971 and it says letter issued (mailed). What does that mean? He does owe the IRS from last year

            It can mean several things depending on his tax situation.

            If you are referring to an IRS account transcript code, the 971 can reference a lot of different things. Look at the account transcript, which should have a notation as to what the code is for.

            Most likely it means it’s being reviewed by a person.

            Google the code. There’s a few websites with the many definitions of what it can be for.
