Mistakes on federal tax returns are common and can be fixed. How? Amend your tax return and file it right. Tax Form 1040x is the form to use for amending your tax return. But wait, it can’t be e-filed. How do you file an amended return? Filing status, income, deduction or credits that are wrong on your tax return can be fixed with an Amended return. There is even a special WMR, dubbed the WMAR to check the status of your Amended tax return.
Join this Amended Return group and/or follow the group forum topic, to learn more and mingle with others, ask questions and share your experience!
Tell us here! What is an Amended Return, did you get an amended return refund yet? Any hiccups? Have you used the WMAR? Hey, what’s that?

Hi,
I filed an amended return 1040x, for 2015 in March of 2016 which was submitted due to the need to reallocate my ES payments between our return and my minor sons return. We received the return pertaining to the amended return on June 27,2016. All penalty and interest was abated and we received a notice verifying that (we did file a form 843 to request abatement. In addition, during this process we had spoken to
IRS representatives on the phone, who actually confirmed the reallocation of the ES payments on the phone. On 6/30/2016 I looked on the IRS website (WMAR) and it stated that “Take Action, Need information “. This confused me because we already received both refunds for our amended and our sons amended and all penalty and interest abated. We found out that the additional information needed was us forgetting to sign the amended return. The IRS sent the return back to us with a form 8009A on 7/5/2016 indicating that it needed to be signed, We signed the return and returned it priority mail immediately ! WMAR now showed amended return received on 7/11/2016. It continued showing received and not processed until a few days ago where it now states (Take Action – We received your amended return but have not processed it. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please call 1-800-829-0582 ext 623. Can anyone give me some insight as to what else they might need being that we received the refund, all penalties and interest abated and reimbursed and we responded to the notice 8009A by signing the return. THAnks !!! -

Has anyone received their return yet? My status shows that it was adjusted on the 17th. I also spoke to a representative and she said they would be releasing the check the 15th, which leaves me confused. Anyone any thoughts?

Hello. So today I start my first Amended Return experience. I filled out all necessary paperwork and headed to my nearest USPS in Cincinnati. Cost about $6.00 to mail it Priority with Tracking. They said my IRS Processing center ( In Fresno, CA) should get it on Monday. I am praying for a fast turnaround.

I filed amended returns for 2012 and 2013. Figures were the same, just changed filing status to married filing jointly, due to changes in DOMA. They show that they received them on August 25.
I called them on November 14 and was told they were running behind, and to call back at the end of December.
I called them on January 12…..didn’t want them to feel “pressured”….as if. I was told that after 20 weeks, they were definitely past due and she didn’t know why. She stated she would send the office that physically had the returns a “referral”….not sure what that will do. And I should call again in 4 weeks if I hadn’t received anything. I won’t hold my breath.

Finally everything got resolved, and refund check arrived. the interest was a lot more than I’d calculated it would be, and it seems that the number of days was counted going back to April 15, 2012, not going back to the date of the IRS receiving the amended return in their system. I’m guessing that this is because I was filing an amended return only because we were not allowed to file a joint return in 2012.

I filed amended return for 2012 in early August 2014. They received it, as noted on website ‘Where’s my amended return.’ I kept checking website but no change until 12 weeks passed, then the website notification was to call IRS..wait on phone was over an hour, but then got an agent who reported there was nothing wrong, just that the filing required combining two tax returns. I refiled as married filing joint for 2010 and 2012 after DOMA sections declared unconstitutional. The 2010 was completed in a few weeks and we got a refund. The 2012 one, however, has now been outstanding for over 18 weeks. An agent told me on a second call that it showed as having been processed in early December, but still no check. Wondering if other same sex couples are running into extreme delays in processing. This was not a complicated filing. Also wondering if getting a transcript will shed any light on the issues.

I amended years 11,12 and 13, which they got in mid August. I spoke with an agent last week when my 16 weeks were up and he told me no to worry, that the IRS pays interest on the refund. According to him they pay 3% per day and it starts accruing 45 days after they got your amended tax return 1040X, and that they stop it once the check is issued. I’ve look all over the web to see how they compound that daily interest but to no avail, I would like to know (if you don’t mind) Did they pay you interest in the refund you got and if any how much over, was it substantial?
Thanks.

Called IRS again and was finally given a date the check is scheduled to be mailed. IF they mail when they said, total time will have veen 5 months from receipt to refund. Pretty bad service, if you ask me.
To the person asking about interest….it is NOT 3% a day, good grief….it is 3% (annual rate), calculated for each day….so you’re looking at, roughly, .03/365% a day for each day . I don’t know when they start calculating interest, but if you’re like me, the govt has had a lot of extra money of mind for 3 years, and I didn’t get a cent of interest on it. -
CJR38
About interest…. i found a reasonable answer to question. Interest is calculated at an annual 3% rate for the days that have elapsed since return was put into system, minus 45 days. So, if you mailed an amended return for 2011 on, say August 3, 2014 and the IRS logged it into their system on August 13, 2014, there’s no interest on any refund due calculated for 45 days from August 13th. After day 45, simple interest (as I understand it at this point) accrues at rate of .03/365 per day until the time an IRS guru approves the refund. So even though the govt may have had your extra money for years, you only get interest on it if the IRS takes more than 45 days tp process your return and approve a refund. So most of the time, a refund will get no or a very few days’ worth of interest. Hope this helps. I found it interesting, so I’m glad someone asked the question.

Helpful hint: if you call the IRS number noted on the Where’s My Amended Return website, do so as soon after 7:00 AM as you can reasonably expect someone to get their coffee and sign into a work station. The waits times are much lower than in afternoon…..2 to 7 minutes, as opposed to an hour or more.
Another hint: the website to check amended returns (Where’s My Amended Return?) is NOT up to date, no matter how often you’ll read this and hear this on robo calls. My return was processed Dec 3, according to an agent, and the website still shows the return as not having been processed….three weeks later. Apparently, many returns get shunted to some special place for processing, and there’s no feedback to this update website. -
Raquel
Ok genius. Can you please share wether or not are we going to pay taxes on the interest money?
Thanks.
-
CJR38
Yes, the interest is taxable. And, why the apparently sarcastic, “ok, genius”? People here are trying to help each ither out and share information. Comments like this one suppress any desire to help.
-
scarlett
I think “Raquel” was being sarcastic due to the attitude you showed in your first reply.
“To the person asking about interest….it is NOT 3% a day, good grief” You could have expressed that a bit differently. That being said, thanks everyone for sharing all this great information with us.I just wonder where/how will I report the interest when e-filing…..On what line?
Does anyone know?Again, don’t be snarky if you don’t like other people doing it to you.

Hi guys,
I have a question that would like some answers here. Hope you guys can advise since it’s Thanksgiving tomorrow and IRS decided to close early which is typical and i totally understand that. Anyways, I filed my tax return for the year and claimed my niece and got the credit for the claim. Without realizing the fact that my grandparents claimed her as well on their tax return because she stayed there longer than six months so i wanted to amend my return using the 1040X. I completed the steps and will send the difference owed to the IRS next week. Here comes the question, my grandparents never received the fund for the year (yes, i just found out) it’s been on hold or pending or whatever. Now since i will be correcting this issue and sending in the 1040X, will the IRS complete their return and provide the return to my grandparents for whatever the amount they are entitled to? Please advise guys.. thanks a lot.

I filed amended return for 2013 and mistakenly listed the wrong computation method although my amount was right. The IRS corrected the amount (which really was not the part that was wrong). I refiled and mailed another amended return on 6.13.14 explaining that I really used a tax worksheet to figure my tax instead of the tax tables. I go to Where’s my Amended return and always get a message to call in. Every time I call, which has been three times so far, I am always told they need another 30 days. This is RIDICULOUS!!! One tiny error. If they would’ve contacted me the first time instead of trying to correct it on their own, this could’ve been avoided. It is now 11.24.14 I STILL do not have the full amount of my refund. Does anyone have any idea who to write a letter or send an email to about this situation? I don’t have time or the patience anymore to sit on hold for an hour or more only to be told I have to wait another 30 days.

Amended return was received August 28, 2014. When can I expect to hear or see something from the IRS? Seems like others are receiving refunds or at least a letter.

How long does it take to get the amended refund in the mail once the filing has been completed?
-
Shermondria
I called the IRS and the agent said my 2013 was adjusted on December 11 but the check is not due to go out in the mail until 12/31!!!
I can’t believe this people are actually sitting on my check for 3 weeks!
To the person mentioning the transcripts, my record of account shows the refund cycle 20145202 and the date of 1/12/15. The guy said the checks come out of Austin, TX.

I just ordered my transcript online. I amended our return on March 1, IRS received on March 16, and we were told on the phone yesterday that we should be seeing our refund any day now. But my transcript is so confusing. It has a negative balance with a date of July 7, 2014 beside it. I have a 806 code, but no 846 code! Help!

What does this mean?
I amended my tax return for the year ending in December 2013. I did my taxes and forgot to do the education credit. I mailed out my 1040x on 4/10/14. I looked at my transcript yesterday and it has some info on there I want to know about. I tried to call the IRS but their hold times were ridiculous. My transcript has the following info:
( code 766-credit to your account 4/15/14 $xxx)(290-additional tax assessed cycle date 20142005 $0.00)
971-notice issued. 6/2/14
846- refund issued. 6/2/14
Why is the refund issued date 6/2/14 if that date hasn’t gotten here yet?
Why is there a cycle date next to the additional tax assessed info?
I’m just trying to figure out when my check will be mailed.

Ten Facts about Amended Tax Returns
Source: – IRS Tax Tips Issue Number 2014-51
Did you discover that you made a mistake after you filed your federal tax return? You can make it right by filing an amended tax return. Here are the top ten things to know about filing an amended tax return.
1. Use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to correct errors on your tax return. You must file an amended return on paper. It can’t be e-filed.
2. You usually should file an amended tax return if you made an error claiming your filing status, income, deductions or credits on your original return.
3. You normally don’t need to file an amended return to correct math errors. The IRS will automatically make those changes for you. Also, do not file an amended return because you forgot to attach tax forms, such as a W-2 or schedule. The IRS will usually send you a request for those.
4. You usually have three years from the date you filed your original tax return to file Form 1040X to claim a refund. You can file it within two years from the date you paid the tax, if that date is later. That means the last day for most people to file a 2010 claim for a refund is April 15, 2014. See the 1040X instructions for special rules that apply to certain claims.
5. If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each year. You should mail each year in separate envelopes. Note the tax year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X. Check the form’s instructions for where to mail your return.
6. If you use other IRS forms or schedules to make changes, make sure to attach them to your Form 1040X.
7. If you are due a refund from your original return, wait to receive that refund before filing Form 1040X to claim an additional refund. Amended returns take up to 12 weeks to process. You may spend your original refund while you wait for any additional refund.
8. If you owe more tax, file your Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as possible. This will reduce any interest and penalties.
9. You can track the status of your amended tax return three weeks after you file with ‘Where’s My Amended Return?’ This tool is available on IRS.gov or by phone at 866-464-2050. It’s available in English and in Spanish. The tool can track the status of an amended return for the current year and up to three years back.
10. To use ‘Where’s My Amended Return?’ enter your taxpayer identification number, which is usually your Social Security number. You will also need your date of birth and zip code. If you have filed amended returns for multiple years, select each year one by one.

I have looked everywhere for a group that discuss amended tax returns. Has anyone else filed an amended tax return this years (2013 tax years)? If so, have you received your refund?
-
scarlett
I amended mine it shows received on 3/19 but I havent other than that seen any changes on WMAR or my transcripts. Even called testerday they just told me it was still processing.
-
Ronnette01
Hi Scarlett. WMAR says mine was received on 3/16. I called once a week and they told me nothing was in their system and this was last week. I have seen on facebook “I got my refund” where one lady received hers in 4 weeks (she filed 2/18 and got her refund 3/27) another lady got hers in 3 weeks. Just hoping it won’t be long.
-
Ronnette01
Are you looking at your transcripts? I was wondering if they changed too. I will keep you updated as well!!
